Student Talk About Dangers of Sharing Illicit Photos

On December 14th, Constable Gord Olsen of the Winnipeg Royal Canadi-

an Mounted Police, Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) Unit, presented in-

formation about the dangers of misusing the internet and social media.

His presentation included a scenario, provided resources for support and

informed our students of the laws when sending, having or sharing

these types of pictures with anyone. The message was, “Be smart with

how we use our devices and think about the consequences.” Constable

Gord Olsen challenged students, staff and their families too, “Find a spot

at home (kitchen, parents room, etc) to place your devices (phones,

ipods, tablets or laptops) to charge and stayed plugged in the entire

night. The noise and distraction of what is happening can wait. It may

reduce the drama and keep you safe.”

What a surreal season for me! I started

coaching some of these students over 6

years ago. We spent ~400 hours to-

gether, 3 practices a week, 4 tourna-

ments, exhibition matches, Zone

Playoffs, Provincial Qualifiers, and

Provincials. We ended with a record of

56-17 and a perfect 15-0 through zone

playoffs, Provincial qualifiers, and

Provincials!

Thanks to all players for their commit-

ment, and a great group of seniors for

their leadership. Thanks to JV players

for putting in a lot of time knowing

that court time would be limited –

practices would not have

ran so successfully with-

out you guys there.

Since our first meeting

and practices last June,

we talked about how this

group would be a “good”

team based on skill

alone, but it takes leader-

ship, communication,

teamwork, and passion

to be a “great” team.

This group exemplified

all of these things

(especially in the last half of the sea-

son). I am most proud of how these

boys came together as a team! We

started the year playing as individuals

and then they learned how to play as a

group of 6, and then a team of 11.

The biggest focus throughout the year

was always maintaining a, “next ball

mentality”, worrying only about what

we can control and staying positive.

I’m a big believer in the power of posi-

tivity in a team and we used this to our

advantage. The boys used a positive

court demeanor, and energy to control

momentum – and it was this that was

the difference maker in our biggest

games. Our goal going into provincials

was to try and always put ourselves in

a good position for the following day

and we achieved that. We talked about

how this was not just a regular tourna-

ment, it was a BIG weekend, filled

with BIG games, and I was ok with

that because I truly believe that we had

BIG game players!

Congratulations to our tournament all

stars (Erik S. and Justin E.) and the

tournament MVP (Paycen W.). It was

an experience that I hope the boys re-

member for a lifetime…I know I will!

Thanks to everybody who had a role in

the team’s success this year: obviously

the players, parents, volunteer drivers,

Mrs. Blondeau, Mr. Koshel, Mr.

Nemetchek, and Mrs. Poschenrieder

for dealing with all of the administra-

tive work. A Special Thanks to Mr.

Lehmann for putting in all the time he

spent working with these kids over the

previous 3 seasons.

Collin Smith

The End to a Great Season!

This year, WMCI will have two boys’ curling teams and two girls’ curling teams. They will head to Zones sometime in February 2018. We would like to extend a HUGE Thank You to our Community Coaches – Sylvia Hayward, Rob Melnyk and Todd Tonn for their support and encouragement of our athletes. Stay tuned for more information about Zones in Carberry and come on out to cheer on our curlers.

WMCI Theatre Club News

WMCI Theatre Club’s second trip to

Winnipeg was on December 13th to

watch the play, “A Christmas Carol”,

the classic tale by Charles Dickens.

Cold—hearted Ebenezer Scrooge was

anything but merry at Christmas time,

thinking only of himself, his business and

acquiring wealth. He cared little for

others. Then he is visited by four ghosts

on Christmas Eve. As the Spirits lead

Scrooge to reflect on his life, he be-

comes a changed man, full of gener-

osity.

We look forward to our next trip to Win-

nipeg on January 24th to watch

“Come From Far Away”.

This annual event was held December 19th with all

staff, students, and guests from the Division Office

his busy schedule to stop by and drop off presents to

two lucky students in each grade! After the dinner

there was a chance to take pictures with him too!

Thank you to Presy Biado for making authentic

Phillipine dishes for us to enjoy as well!

Ornament Making

Student Council

Throughout our last week of school in December and of 2017, we planned fun Spirit Days. Some activities included PJ

Day with free hot chocolate throughout the school day, each house decorating a gingerbread house, creating orna-

ments and hosting a Gym Blast!

Student Council is now getting busy planning all of our activities for the rest of the school year, so be on the lookout

for upcoming Spirit Days and Valentine’s Match-makers!

GREEN WARRIORS

This winter WMCI’s own Green Warriors environmental group has been hard at work. Not only has the school’s composting program continued to flourish, but the students and staff advisors alike have been putting in their personal time and brain power towards developing new pro-jects. Students have been making a major push toward an eventual proposal to the town ask-ing that plastic bags be banned in the community of Gladstone and more environmentally friendly alternatives offered. Through petitions, signatures have been obtained from vast amounts of the student body as well as community members and business owners in the area who support the proposal. In another step toward project development within the school it-self, the Green Warriors have purchased necessary equipment for a rooftop rain collection barrel to be used as an energy efficient, cost efficient, and water efficient way to maintain the school garden that the group plans on reviving this spring.

Be clean,

Be green,

Have a Happy New Year!
