German Exchange 2017
Teddington School has run a German Exchange programme for
41 years with the Geschwister Scholl Schule, based in Konstanz in
southern Germany, close to the border of Switzerland. It was
started in 1976 by the two schools to allow students the
opportunity to experience other cultures and style of education.
This year has proved to be more popular than ever with over 60
Year 9 students participating. So far the students have been
treated to a welcome BBQ, visited the Zeppelin Museum at
Friedrichshafen and have had the opportunity to practice their
German language skills during visits to the museum town of
Meersburg and Stein am Rhein.
Post 16 Future Pathways for Year 10 Students On Wednesday 12 July as part of the Post 16 Future Pathways Year 10 students had the opportunity
to experience a day at one of three local universities — Royal Holloway, Roehampton or Kingston
College. Year 10 student Katie Frost writes:
―On Wednesday 12 July, 38 students from Year 10 attended an open day at Royal Holloway University
in Egham as part of the Post-16 activities. On arrival we were immediately impressed by the
architecture of the building which is in the style of a French Chateau, built in the 1800s. We were given
a very warm welcome by second year student ambassadors who gave us an insight into their
experience at the university. They also helped up to clear up any previous misconceptions we had
about what life at a university was like. We were given the chance to look at several prospectuses
from other universities and looked at courses which were of interest to us, including showing us some
of the more unusual courses which actually do exist like Viking Studies and International Spa
Management. We were given a tour of their spectacular campus and were allowed to explore their
faculties and even saw some students who had just been at their graduation ceremony. We were then
given a lesson on critical thinking and learnt how it could be used for any subject and useful tips for
studying at university. It was a great day out and brilliantly organised. Thank you for the opportunity to
explore some potential future pathways.‖
On Thursday 13 July the Sixth Form hosted Year 10 students for A Level taster sessions. Students
were able to sample a range of subjects including Art, Biology, History, PE, Photography and
Textiles. Also on offer were subjects that are only taught at A level such as Government and Politics,
Philosophy and Ethics, Economics and Film Studies. The sessions were practical and designed to give
students a flavour of how subjects are taught in Sixth Form.
There will be further opportunities to discover more about subjects taught in Teddington Sixth Form at
the Sixth Form Open Evening on Wednesday 8 November, in Year 11 assemblies and by talking to
subject teachers, careers officers and the Head of Year 11.
Post 16 Future Pathways for Year 10 Students
The feedback from the students was positive:
‗I liked the fact that Government & Politics is a subject related to my life; it is current and changes all
the time‘.
‗In Psychology we tested each other and didn‘t just listen to the teacher talk‘.
‗Film Studies was a new subject for me. We watched two similar clips from ‗Shaun of the Dead‘ – one
with and one without zombies - and discussed the comparisons. It was really interesting.‘
‗In Biology we did a Year 12 practical about osmosis using salt solution and potato chips – it was
fantastic.‘
‗In Textiles we worked in groups of three to create an original mock-up of a piece of clothing inspired
by architecture using a dressmaker‘s dummy, a length of white fabric, scissors and some pins. In only
40 minutes we produced some brilliant designs.‘
‗What we did in PE built on what I am doing now in GCSE; I am now considering it for A level.‘
‗Sociology is fun. I didn‘t realise how broad the subject is. We looked at good examples of social
situations and I now understand what Sociology is.‘
‗I enjoyed the debate in History so much that I came back in my free session to take part again.‘
Gifted and Talented at Loughborough University
Teddington School has a new Gifted and Talented Programme in PE. The aim of the programme is to
nurture the talents of selected students and offer opportunities to educate and develop them further
with a sport specific focus. A recent trip to Loughborough Sport School was to offer an inspirational day
in one of the UK‘s leading higher education institutions. During the day they took part in several
workshops including Sports Nutrition, Fitness Testing. They also took part in a Handball Master Class.
Hermine Narnio and Zainab Sikander, Year 8 students, gave the following account of the day.
―We were lucky enough to visit Loughborough University on 11 July. We all think it was a great
experience and our school was privileged to be able to go. Even though it was a 3 hour drive, it was
certainly worth it. First we had a tour of the campus and its facilities. After lunch we did a workshop on
nutrition where we were able to learn about healthy and unhealthy food and drink. At the end we were
able to make Lucozade drinks and see of ourselves the amount of sugar in these drinks. The last
activities included some fun fitness test, using cool technology equipment that tested how high we
could jump, our speed and levels of agility. We also had a game of handball and met some of the
England Netball players.‖
This Week in School Each year the Design Technology Departmental staff host a themed Charity Tea for the staff of
Teddington School. This year the theme was East meets West. The school restaurant was transformed
for the afternoon event. We are delighted to announce the final total for the donation to Breast Cancer
Care is £696.
On Wednesday 12 July dancers from the Combination Dance Group performed one of their pieces at a
sharing event at Richmond Park Academy. With a number of schools from across Richmond Borough
it was a great opportunity to see what the different groups had accomplished in a short time. It was a
really lovely way to end the year.
Year 7 G&T PE students were invited to a Year 7 specific workshop. The idea was to develop their
knowledge of fitness testing and enable them to perform and understand how and why they are
important. They were also set a practical task to introduce them to the Psychology of sport and its
importance.

Year 12 Aim Higher Day 1 Monday started with talks from Kingston University and St Mary‘s University. The year group was divided in two and listened to presentations from each university which focussed on student life; clubs and societies, living arrangement options and what universities can offer students in general. Students also had an introduction from their tutors on how to write their UCAS personal statements and then hit the computers to start crafting their 4,000 characters. Finally, the students had presentations about apprenticeships, including one from Unifrog, the platform which the students use for university information.
News from the Sixth Form
Aim Higher Day 2 Jim Colley worked with Year 12 on Tuesday morning, starting with an introduction to university applications, personal statements and how the statements should work alongside university interviews. Students then continued working on their own statements, alongside their tutors, and some had an opportunity for Jim to look over their drafts and give advice. In the afternoon, students were introduced to aspects of personal finance with TheLifeHouseCompany. Students undertook a test to better understand their personalities, being put into 4 character types – lion, otter, beaver and labrador – to gain an insight into their attitude to money. Aim Higher Day 3 On the final day, Year 12 learnt about vlogging and how it can support job applications and their careers. The session was presented by The Media Trust and The Jack Petchey Foundation and culminated students making their own video CVs. The final workshop was about the UCAS application process with Mrs Carroll explaining how students setup, complete and check their application. And then there was pizza, some final words of congratulation for the year and our good wishes for a great summer and successful Results Day on 17 August. We look forward to seeing you back in school on Friday 8 September. Miss Meston, Miss Thomas and Mrs Carroll

Withdrawal of Route 641 Bus route 641 currently runs between West Molesey and Teddington School, Broom Road with one journey towards Teddington School, Broom Road in the morning and one towards West Molesey in the afternoon. The route mainly serves Teddington School. Following a review and to make better use of resources Transport for London propose that from 21 July 2017 route 641 will no longer run. Although there are around 58 trips per day made on the 641, most of these (around 60 per cent) are between Teddington School and Hampton Wick. These trips can either be made by walking around 900 metres or by using high frequency routes 281 and 285 which can be picked up on the Kingston Road and are around 650 metres from the school. There are also a small number or trips made through to West Molesey in the afternoon. These can be made by interchanging at Hampton Wick for route 411. There would be no changes to routes 281, 285 or 411. For further details and to provide your comments please visit the Transport for London website at: tfl.gov.uk/buses/route-641
