Focus on Radio at Bournemouth University. Producing award-winning students for the last 11 years.

Welcome to the National Student Radio Conference 2011. This event is rapidly becoming one of the most interesting and hot events in the radio industry calendar, as proven by the sheer volume of people who continue to want to get involved and the numbers of students who come along each year to learn, meet new people and to take full advantage of the opportunities on offer.

The SRA has spent the last few months working hard to try and make this year’s event as successful as those in the past. We have some people to thank for making things easier along the way, including Chris North at Wise Buddah, Neil Sloan at BBC Radio 1, Carina Tillson at Global Radio and Paul Sylvester at Absolute Radio. Thanks also go to the many organisations supporting this conference, including The Pips, PURE, Hyperagency, Bournemouth University and an extra special thank you to University of Hertfordshire.

There are loads of sessions going on over the next few days so make sure you take advantage of as many of them as possible. There is also the chance to audition for the Voice of the Awards competition, take part in Demo Factor, see student DJ talent battle against top industry professionals and you may even win an I Love Student Radio Award.

The team at Crush Radio, in particular Thom and Kenny, have been fantastic in the lead up to the conference, and we know they will be wonderful hosts. We hope you enjoy yourselves! Be sure to come and say hello!

SRA Executive 2010/2011

Hello and welcome to the Student Radio Conference 2011, proudly hosted by Crush Radio.

From me and all the team here at the University of Hertfordshire Students’ Union we hope you enjoy your stay and get loads of industry tips and advice from the speakers we have for you.

There a lots and lots of thank yous that I need to say, firstly to Scott Grace, Filip Hnizdo & Alaster Armitage-Brain who put all the hard work in last year when I was Station Manager and actually won us the bid for the 2011 Conference. Without you three we wouldn’t have been hosting this conference!

Secondly the SRA Exec has been amazing at organis-ing this conference and we have worked really well together during its planning over the last few months. A big shout out goes to Sarah Ghost who has worked day and night to make the conference a success.

I would also like to say a massive thank you to some of the departments here at UH who have helped to fund, organise and offer their support for the SRA Conference, including Ann Bruno from UH Marketing & Communications, Linda & Michael at UNO Bus Services, Helen & the team from Graduate Futures, Sophia from Food Hertfordshire and not forgetting Kerry, Chris & James from Conference Hertfordshire. You have all been extremely supportive and I really do appreciate it!

Lastly, I would just like to say how proud I am of all the Crush Committee that have put in lots of hard work all year round! It’s been an absolute pleasure to work with all of you and I hope you get lots out of this conference and make it in the big bad industry. In particular Kenny, Lynette, Sam, Jack & Josh you have helped keep me sane over the last few weeks and I love you!

So that’s the thank yous done, now let’s get on with the conference! If you need anything just give us a call! J

The Student Radio Association is proud welcome Tim Westwood at the National Student Radio Conference 2011. Westwood is an urban icon, with the top ranked hip hop show in the UK, and regularly DJs in clubs to over 350,000 people a year. He’s a firm favourite with many members of the SRA, and will be making a much-anticipated appearance on Tuesday night as the headline DJ, rocking the decks from 11pm-12am.

It all started back in 2007. York University was the setting, and URY were the host student radio station for the conference. Johann Campbell from Fresh Air was the eventual winner and won the opportunity to announce at the Student Radio Awards at the New Connaught Rooms in Holborn, London. 2008 saw Ben Hodgson from Demon FM take the prize, with a fine audition at Bath University, at the conference hosted by 1449AM URB. Jade Hutchinson from LSRfm.com and Kyle Wilkinson from 107 Spark FM won the competition in 2009, when the conference was hosted LSRfm.com at Leeds University. And in 2010, Fly FM from Nottingham Trent University hosted the conference, and the eventual winners were Jaye Harrison and David J. Roper, both of whom were

involved in Fly FM.If you joined us for the Student Radio Awards in November 2010 you will have heard them both announcing the categories and nominees for each of the awards.

2011 will be the fifth year we’ve run the Voice of the Awards competition. It’s always a very successful event and attracts a lot of attention, not to mention hundreds of hopefuls who audition each year. The prize is to get your voice all over the Student Radio Awards later in the year, and also to have your very own professional voice over demo recorded and mixed at Wise Buddah in London. It doesn’t end there either, as many of our past finalists have been picked out by the imaging team at BBC Radio 1 and have had their

voice featured on the station.

The auditions will be taking place from 2pm until 8pm Monday. Make sure you get in early to avoid disappointment, as demand is expected to be very high and even exceed the amount of time we have available! The audition itself will last no more than 5 minutes for each person. You will need to say your name, your station, and the line:“Ladies and Gentleman, Welcome to the Student Radio Awards 2011.” [Please note 2011 should be read as “two thousand and eleven”]

The winners will be announced after Demo Factor on Tuesday.
