Summary for search engines

Before the advent of the web there were search engines for old systems or protocols, such as a search engine for
sites Erkki Archie PCC anonymous FTP and search engine eroniqa Veronica Gopher
Protocol Gopher.
If we know that the presence of pre-Web and Web search engines exist, the question that jumps to
mind is: what was happening before that there are these
engines ?How can the user find what he
wants ?
