Lesson 178 Jane Eyre Discussion

This Lesson will be dedicated to discussing Jane Eyre. Consider and discuss the following questions.

Topic 1In Victorian England, extensive musical knowledge and ability were signs of upper-class nobility. At one point, Rochester asks Jane to play the piano and remarks that she plays like any English schoolgirl. What were the intentions of his remark, and what does it imply about Jane’s character?

Topic 2What are Jane’s views on marriage? How do her views change over the course of the novel? Find quotes to support your answers.

Topic 3Throughout the novel Jane seems to use her artwork as a creative outlet. In chapter 13, Jane says, “In the clear embers I was tracing a view, not unlike a picture I remembered to have seen of the castle of Heidelberg, on the Rhine, when Mrs. Fairfax came in, breaking up by her entrance the

fiery mosaic I had been piercing together, and scattering too some heavy unwelcome thoughts that were beginning to throng on my solitude.”

What do you think this means?

Topic 4How does Jane’s attitude with her aunt before she died compare with her attitude toward her aunt when she was a young child?

Lesson Wrap-Up: Give your opinion on the ending of Jane Eyre. Does it seem like a proper ending for the novel?
