The shortlist is a follows:

Exceptional Module Award

Mark Scrimshaw

His module on Integrated Pollution offered a balance be-tween theory and practice through field trips that exposed

students to current Industry trends and practices. The mod-ule leader is an excellent instructor and he also brought in external lecturers that explained aspects of the course that

they were specialists in.

The Winners of the SLTA’s Innovative Teaching Award

Toby Robertson

In the module of Intergroup Relations this year he utilised Blackboard Learn in several ways to get the students more

involved and attentive to the module content.

He created weekly quizzes, on the previous lecture, that would then unlock the next weeks lecture. With added

incentives to score highly, such as getting 100% would un-lock the quiz for the next lecture.

Another innovative way he used Blackboard Learn was to create an optional assessment that allowed us to mark

each other’s work. A short essay was submitted on an early subject within the module, with students being taken on a step-by-step guide through marking the fellow students'

work, but also being introduced to the same mark scheme that would be used to grade our own work at the end of

the module.

Student Teacher of the Year Award

Layal Hakim

She is always happy to help no matter what the problem is. She takes time to teach and make sure you understand the content thoroughly by showing you the steps of working. Her students felt she was a very enthusiastic and helpful

teacher.

Personal Tutoring Award

Matthew Hughes

Matthew has always been there to offer both academic and personal support. One student felt he is one of the most

approachable members of staff they have worked with dur-ing my time here.

Feedback of the Year Award

Martin Folly

The whole space on the front of the essay for marking is overflowing with feedback - not only feedback for the essay, but feedback of how to improve your essays generally. Also if you see him in his office about a piece of work he is bril-

liant at explaining areas which will help you on other pieces of work.

Outstanding Admin and Support Award

Monica Fernandes

For her persistence and dedication to improving a student’s rusty and in many cases, defunct writing skills. She shows

enthusiasm and humour and can easily connect to the stu-dents and be there for them. One student said ‘It is quite

refreshing to see staff members like her who really want to be there for you and see you succeed.’

Postgraduates Choice Award

Milly Williamson

Milly is a fantastic lecturer and course leader for the MA Media and Public Relations. Her lectures are simultaneously stimulating, engaging, challenging and rewarding. She also ensures all class materials are available before hand, she

offers fantastic feedback on coursework, she provides swift turnaround on assignments, and even organised a Mandarin

-speaking tutor for the Chinese students of the course.

Inspirational Teaching Award

Chris Cox

A committed, inspirational, entertaining and innovative teacher. He will go out of his way to ensure students are

engaged, entertained, progressing and most of all: happy! He is always there to immediately respond to emails, his door is always open, and he will continuously stay for all

outside-learning-hours events. He inspires students to work harder and learn more. Chris has not only provided out-

standing support in all he could, he has helped provide addi-tional support in setting up lectures and support sessions he has given his students more incentive to think creatively and critically and has encouraged them to improve their perfor-

mance and skills.

Supervisor of the Year Award

Peter Thomas

He gave at least one of his student’s weekly challenges to ensure they were meeting their personally set deadlines. He goes out of his way to email students about upcoming aca-demic events i.e. dissertation week, ask events. He is dedi-

cated to his students.

Congratulations to all this year’s winners, for demonstrating best practice with in Brunel University.
