1 INTRODUCTION

GSFC University is being modeled as a boutique university to produce 100% industry ready manpower with 80% students getting employment. It is housed in lush green surroundings of Fertilizer Nagar. The teaching at GSFC University is inspired by medical education principles. In case of a Medical College, a Hospital is attached to it, where students learn to apply theoretical knowledge to practical aspects of medical treatment. Here our University is housed at handshaking distance from GSFC’s 22 plants.

A four pillar approach is adopted so that theoretical knowledge application in day-to-day working of the organizations / industries is practiced. First pillar is e-enabled virtual labs, where students grapple with various aspects of virtual instruments and carry our experiments n number of times and understand ‘why’ of theory. Second pillar is physical labs where students perform same experiments in physical world with real fluids and lab model equipment. Third pillar is their exposure to real plant and machineries to full scale sizes, where full understanding of theories thought in classrooms as applied to industry is experienced by students at superficial level. Fourth pillar is 4 weeks internship after every semester where he is expected to deep dive and understands the plant and machinery, processes etc.

GSFCU has made it compulsory for its undergraduate students to undergo practical work in the form of a four- week industrial internship at the end of the each semester known as Student Industrial Internship (SII). Carries 2 credits in each semester. SII provides opportunity to the students to experience the actual working domain of the industry. The students will develop skills in work ethics, communication, management, leadership as well as working in a team,

GSFCU shares a close collaboration with the local This internship programme is the key element of the University Industry collaboration.

The university offers three courses:-

Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) -Chemical, Mechanical, and Civil.

Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) -Chemical Science, Life Science.

Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA -Finance,Marketing,H.R.,Office Management)

6

2 KEY OBJECTIVES OF INDUSTRIAL INTERNSHIP

The Key Objectives of the Student Industrial Internship (SII) is to develop in student’s the skills & knowledge demanded by “world of work”:-

• To expose GSFCU students to the actual working environment of industries

which ,will enable them to relate theoretical knowledge with practical application in industries

• To develop skills in safety practices, work ethics, communication, management, leadership quality, team player etc.

• To establish a close bond between the industries and GSFCU

• To develop their soft skills like verbal & written communication

3 LEARNING OUTCOME

At the end of this internship, students are able to:

• Demonstrate skills in communication, management and teamwork

• Adopt ethic, professionalism and HSE practices in work culture

• Demonstrate continuous building of skills and knowledge throughout the internship

• Appreciation of sustainability issues in industry

• Expand philosophy and knowledge in the field

• Gain a greater understanding of the duties and responsibilities of a fitness professional

• Identify personal strengths and weaknesses

• Understand and adhere to professional standards in the field

• Relate to, interact with, and learn from current professionals in the field

• Broaden your knowledge and education by continuing to learn

• Put theory into practice

• Develop the initiative and motivation to be a self-starter and work independently

• Keep current in the field, update knowledge as standards are revised

7

4 INTERNSHIPAPPROACH

1. SII should have the following internshipapproach: Pre Training

1. Safety Awareness 2. Sharing background about the training. 3. Introduction of Mentors 4. Providing Internship schedule like Name of Company & Schedule

During Training

1. Enhancement in skill level & knowledge 2. Hands-oninternship 3. Team-work activities 4. Leadership and managementskills 5. Sustainabilityawareness

Post Training 1. Preparation of Final reports /presentations & submission 2. Viva Voce/Test. 3. Performance feedback 4. Feedback on training provided.

2. OBJECTIVES: To reduce the gap between the institutional study and industrial requirement, students need to be trained in industry. Hence there is a requirement to achieve network between students & industry One of the main objectives of an internship is to expose students to a particular job and a profession or industry. While students’ might have an idea about what a job is like, students’s won’t know until they actually perform it. Taking an internship at in a particular industry would help him find that what it is like to work in an industry..

Another benefit of an internship is developing contacts. These industries can help student’s find a job later, act as references or help students’ with projects. Meet the people & ask them how they started their careers, how they got to where they are now and if they have any suggestions for you to improve your skills. Hands-on experience to include: personal training; time and stress management; interpersonal skills; group exercise teaching; presentations; organization of shutdowns; budgeting; marketing; liability and risk management; paperwork; equipment ordering, maintenance, cleaning and repair; responding to emergencies.

Mentoring from the industry internship mentor.

Opportunities to network in the field,

Professional communication including input of ideas, and confidentiality.

8

The objective of GSFC University Student industrial internship is to provide the network between students and industries, get a feel of industry, and join the mainstream of workforce in industry.

The student after going the total internship should not feel out of place when he joins an industry as he would have gone thru the nitty gritty of the work in industry.

3. EXPECTED LEARNINGOUTCOMES:

Briefly overall learning outcomes can be as follows:

Apply theoretical/practical knowledge in industrialsettings Implement Health and Safety practices in workplace Acquire skills in communication, management and teamwork Practice ethical and professional workculture

These are further detailed in Annexure for each stream & year wise.

4. INTERNSHIPMETHODOLOGY:

The internship methodology will require applying theoretical knowledge in industrial applications by assigning them:

Real project based assignments/in-plantinternship Research based activities/developing new product line for theindustry Solving industrial problems through innovativeideas Group discussion regarding a industrial scenario, which require theoretical knowledge

7. DETAILS OF STUDENT INTERNSHIPPROGRAM

As important and necessary as book-knowledge is in the education and internship of the future

generation, nothing compares to actual work experience. For it is only when knowledge is applied

that it becomes tangible, real and truly understood in all its usefulness and practicality.

It is in this spirit that GSFCU undergraduates have to undergo a compulsory internship

programme within the course of their degree studies.

With foresight and knowing the kind of graduates we wanted to produce, this internship

programme has been implemented right from semester one. Ours is a unique 1month every

semester (8/6 months total) long industrial internship programme, which we feel is just the right

amount of time to immerse the undergraduate in the completion of real-world tasks and projects

in the working environment pre-graduation. Too short a programme would just be glossing the

surface while a longer stint would be too drawn out. Through the years, we have partnered with

numerous local and international companies who have gladly joined us in this internship

undertaking.

Interns available are from the following Bachelor Degree Programmes:

School Field of Studies

School of Technology Chemical, Mechanical & Civil Engineering

School of Science Chemistry, Biology (Cell and molecular biology and biotechnology)
