Nursing Program Philosophy

Theorganizingframeworkprovidesabaseforplanningcurriculumcontent,coursesequencing,curriculumevaluationandflowsfromthesimpletothecomplex.Theorganizingframeworkisderivedfromthephilosophyandiscomposedofthemajorbeliefsregardinghumanbeings,environment,health,education,nursingeducationandnursing.Theconceptsofcaring,client-centeredcare,teamworkandcollaboration,evidence-basednursingpractice,qualityimprovement,safety,informatics,andprofessionalismareinterrelatedwiththebeliefsandidentifiedwithinourphilosophy.TheNursingprogram’smissionistopreparenursestoprovidehigh-quality,ethicalandcompassionatehealthcaretoindividuals,families,communitiesandpopulations.TheCollegeValuesofLearning,Caring,Commitment,IntegrityandExcellencearereflectedwithintheorganizingframeworkthatsupportsthemissionoftheNursingprogramsandClarksonCollege.TheClarksonCollegeNursingprogramconceptsaredefinedasfollows:

Health & Safety Requirements

Studentsenteringnursingmustsubmitevidenceofgoodhealth.Itistheresponsibilityofthestudenttomaintainhealthandsafetyrequirements.Studentswhoareoutofcompliancewithanyhealthandsafetyrequirementswillbeblockedfromonlinecampusprogram-specificclinicalcoursesandwillnotbeallowedtoattendclinicaluntiltherequirementsaremet.QuestionsregardinghealthandsafetymaybedirectedtotheClinicalEducationComplianceofficeat402.552.6206or402.552.6285.Healthandsafetyrequirementsaresubjecttoimmediatechangeinordertomaintaincompliancewithstateandfederalrequirements,CenterforDiseaseControlrequirementsandstandardsofpractice.UNDERGRADUATE NURSING HEALTH & SAFETY PROCEDURE “BlockingProcess”fornon-compliantstudents:

• HealthandSafetyItemsaredueby4p.m.thebusinessdayPRIORtotheappropriateCollegehealthandsafetyvendor’sstatedduedate.

• Rechecksofnon-compliantstudentswillonlyoccurat4p.m.thenextbusinessday.Anystudentscompliantwillbeunblockedandallowedtoreturntoclassesatthattime.Nostudentswillbeunblockedbeforethe4p.m.deadline.

• Studentsmissingclinicalduetonon-compliancewillresultinanunexcusedabsence(pleaserefertotheabsencepolicy).Nomake-upassignments,exams/quizzes,orclinicalwillbeallowed.

• Studentswillmeetwithfacultytoestablishaclinicalcontracttooutlineexpectationsduetounexcusedabsence(s).

Academic Progression

ACADEMIC PROGRESSION AcademicsuccessisonlyonerequirementforprogressionintheNursingprogram.ThestudentmustalsocomplywiththeProfessionalConductPolicy.Thecurriculumisorganizedsothatastudentmustsatisfactorilycompletethenursingcoursesinthepropersequenceateachlevelbeforeprogressingtothenextlevel.Failedcoursesinthenursingmajororthefollowingsupportcourses:CH110GeneralChemistry,BI210Microbiology,BI211Anatomy,BI213Physiology,HC220GerontologyandBI227Pathophysiologycanberepeatedtoachieveapassinggrade;however,anursingmajororsupportcoursemaynotberepeatedmorethanonetime.AstudentwhofailsanursingmajororsupportcoursemorethanoncewillbedismissedfromtheBSNprogram.Thefinaltheorycoursegradeconsistsofalettergrade.Studentsmustcompletecourseworkwithagradeof80%oraboveinordertosuccessfullycompletetheorycourse.Anearned80%testscoreaverageinadditiontoanoverallearnedcourseaverageof80%isrequiredofallstudentsinordertopassanursingtheoryclass.Ifastudentdoesnotpassoneitherthetestaverageortheoverallaverage,onlythegradethatreflectsthefailinggradewillbepostedandturnedintotheRegistrar.Forclinicalnursingcourses,afinalgradeofSatisfactoryProgress(SP)orUnsatisfactoryProgress(UP)willbegiventoindicateclinicalachievement.Astudentisrequiredtoachieveapassinggradeinthefollowingsupportcoursestobeallowedtoprogresstothenextlevel:CH110GeneralChemistry,BI210Microbiology,BI211Anatomy,BI213Physiology,HC220GerontologyandBI227Pathophysiology.Astudentmustearnaminimumgradeof“C”inatheorycourseandaSatisfactoryProgress(SP)inaclinicalcourseinordertosuccessfullycompleteanursingcourse.Failuretoachieveeitherofthosegradeswillresultinthestudentbeingrequiredtorepeatboththeoryandclinicalcourses.StudentsmustalsomeettheComprehensiveStudentAssessment(ATI)policyinordertoprogressintheBSNprogram.COMPREHENSIVE STUDENT ASSESSMENT (ATI) POLICY ATIATIexamsarerequiredofallBaccalaureateNursingstudents.Completionoftheexamsisidentifiedintherespectivecoursesyllabus.StudentswhosecompositeATIscorefallsbelowtheProficiencyLevel2,mustcompletetheATIFocusedReviewProcessandretakethatATItestuntiltheProficiencyLevel2isachieved.Failureto1)taketheATIexam,2)completetheFocusedReviewProcess,and/or3)retaketheexamtoachieveProficiencyLevel2willresultinanautomaticcoursegradeofincompleteforthecourse.Thestudentmustthencompletethespecificworktoreceiveagradeforthecourse.Thismayimpactthestudent’sprogressionintheNursingprogramand/orcompletionofthestudent’sprogram.

IfanATIexamisrequiredduringthesemesteryouwillbenotifiedbyyourinstructor.ATIPROGRESSIONPOLICYThestudentmustachievetherequiredpassingscorefortheATIexambeforeprogressingtothenextsemester.ThestudentneedstopasstheATIexampriorto5p.m.Fridayofthefirstweekofclass.Thestudentwillbeallowedtoregisterandattendclassthefirstweek.IfthestudentdoesnotpasstheATIexampriortothisdeadline,thestudentwillberequiredtodropthecourse.ATIREMEDIATIONPOLICYTheclinicalinstructorwillreviewtheFocusedReviewnotesafterfirstfailureandmayoffertomeetwiththestudentaftersecondfailureforremediationcounselingtoaddressareasofweakness.Thestudentmustallow48hoursfortheFocusedReviewProcessbeforeretakingthenextproctoredATIexam.DuringtheFocusedReviewProcess,considerusingothersourcestoreviewtopicssuchasnutritiontextbook,medical-surgicaltextandtheATIwebsite.ResourcesontheATIwebsitemaybefoundunderthesectiononATIproducts.Selectthelearningtabtoviewadditionalresources,includingnurselogicandachieve.WITHDRAW FAIL AstudentmayWithdrawFail(WF)oncefromanymajororsupportcourseintheBaccalaureateNursingprogram.AfterreceivingaWithdrawFail(WF)inamajororsupportcourse,thestudentmustrepeatthecourseforagrade.AstudentmayWithdrawFail(WF)fromonlytwomajororsupportcoursesduringhis/hercurrentprogramofstudy.WithdrawFail(WF)fromathirdmajororsupportcoursewillresultindismissalfromtheBaccalaureateNursingprogram.INCOMPLETE Studentsneedingextendedtimetomeetclinicalcompetenciesduetoanextenuatinglifeevent(i.e.pregnancy,deathofafamilymember,etc.)havethefollowingoptions:

• Ifthereareavailableclinicalhoursremaininginthesemesterwiththesite,thestudentcancompletetheclinicalhoursduringthescheduledsemesterasoutlinedbytheclinicalfaculty.

• Iftherearenotclinicalhoursremaininginthesemesterorclinicalsiteoptionsavailable,thestudentcantakeanincompleteintheclinicalcourse,aslongashe/sheisingoodstanding.Theremainingclinicalhourswillneedtobemadeupintheimmediatefollowingsemester.Thestudentwouldnotbeabletoprogressinhis/herprogramuntiltheclinicalcourseandanyco-requisitecourseworkaresuccessfullycompleted.Studentswouldnotbeallowedtoprogressinhis/herprogramduringthesemesterthataclinicalmake-upisbeingcompleted.

• ThestudentmaybeetwiththeAccommodationsofficeforfurtherneedsortoassessfortemporaryaccommodations.

Course Instruction

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES FOR LEARNING

1. Studentsareresponsiblefortheirownlearning.2. Attendclassontimeandonschedule.Classrollsareutilizedtorecordstudentattendanceand

instructorsaretobenotifiedinadvanceifthestudentisunabletoattendclass.3. Requiredtheoryandclinicalassignmentsmustbecompletedtothestudent’sbestabilityandturned

inontime.4. Assignedmaterialistobereadpriortoclassattendance.5. Studentsareexpectedtobeawareoftheirownprogressandaskforadditionalclarificationor

assistanceinatimelymanner,ifneeded.6. Studentsareencouragedtomeetwithfacultywhenatest/coursegradeislessthan80%88.7. TheNursingSkillsLabandtheSuccessCenterareavailableifassistanceisnecessary.8. WhilethepreferredmethodofcommunicationbetweenthestudentandinstructorisviaClarkson

Collegeemail,eachindividualinstructorwilldefinehis/herpreference.Itisthestudents’responsibilitytoaskthefacultyifthereareanyquestionsregardingcommunicationinthecourse.

9. Activeinvolvementinactivities,assignmentsanddiscussionsintheclassroomorviatheclassroomonlineplatformisexpected.

10. Studentsareexpectedtocontactcoursefacultyifhe/sheexperiencesdifficultieswithcoursecontentoraccessinginformation.

11. Examsaretobetakenasscheduled.12. Usetheadd/dropcoursesprocedureasoutlinedintheCollegeAcademicCatalog.13. Completecourseworkwithagradeof80%oraboveinordertosuccessfullycompletetheorycourse.

Anearned80%testscoreaverageinadditiontoanoverallearnedcourseaverageof80%isrequiredofallstudentsinordertopassatheorynursingclass.Percentagegradeswillnotberounded(i.e.,a79.98%willnotberoundedtoa80%).Thefinaltheorycoursegradeconsistsofalettergrade.Studentsmustcompletecourseworkwithagradeof80%oraboveinordertosuccessfullycompletetheorycourse.Ifastudentdoesnotpassoneitherthetestaverageortheoverallaverage,onlythegradethatreflectsthefailinggradewillbepostedandturnedintotheRegistrar.

14. AgradeofSatisfactoryProgress(SP)orUnsatisfactoryProgress(UP)willbegiventoindicateclinicalachievement.

15. Itisthestudent’sresponsibilitytomaintainaclinicalskillschecklisteachsemester.16. Itisthestudent’sresponsibilitytoobtainreturnedpaperwork/assignmentsbytheendofthe

semester.17. StudentsareexpectedtofollowallCollegeandprogram-specificpolicies.18. Professionalismisexpectedatalltimesintheclassroom.

ThestudentwillbeevaluatedaccordingtothelevelcompetenciesthatarederivedfromtheconceptualframeworkandthephilosophyoftheClarksonCollegeBaccalaureateNursingprogram.Learningexperiencesprovidedwillgivethestudenttheopportunitytodemonstratesatisfactoryperformanceofthelevelcompetenciesandprofessionalbehaviors.Thestudentisencouragedtoreviewtheclinicalevaluationformwiththeclinicalinstructorthroughoutthecourse.FORMATIVE EVALUATION Formativeevaluationisanongoingprocessthatprovidesdatathatcanbeusedtodevelopamorecompleteevaluationofthestudent'sperformanceinthecourse.Formativeevaluation(ongoing)isdoneatintervalsspecifiedbytheinstructor.Anecdotalnoteswillbeutilizedtosupplementtheevaluationformwhennecessary.Studentswillsignanddateaftereachanecdotalnote,documentingtheyhavereadtheevaluationandunderstandtheirpresentlevelofachievement.

Attendance at Class & Clinical Laboratory

Studentsareresponsibleforattendingallscheduledclassesandclinical/practicumexperiences.Ifastudentmissesaclassorclinical/practicumexperience,thestudentassumesresponsibilityforthisactionandwillbesubjecttostipulationsofpolicy.Absencesareconsideredeitherexcusedorunexcused.Thestudentisresponsiblefornotifyingthetheoryand/orclinicalfacultyandtheclinicalagencywhenshe/heisunabletoattendascheduledclassorclinicalassignment.Theonlyexceptionwillbewhennostudentsattendduetoweatherorotheremergency.EXCUSED ABSENCES

4. Foranexcusedabsencerelatedtoaspecialevent,thestudentmustreceiveapprovalfromtheclinicalinstructor.Ifapproved,arrangementswillbemadetomakeupmissedcoursework.

5. Intheeventofacrisisinwhichthestudentisunabletonotifytheclinicalinstructorinadvance,thecoursecoordinatororprogramdirector,asappropriate,willreviewthesituation.Anexcusedabsencewillbedeterminedatthattimeandarrangementsmadeforcoursework.

6. Astudentwhomissesacourseexaminationisresponsiblefornotifyingthecoursecoordinatorpriortothescheduledexamtime.Ifanexcusedabsence,thestudentmaytaketheexamatadatetobedeterminedbythecoursecoordinator.Astudentwhodoesnottakethetestontherescheduleddateandtimewillreceiveanunexcusedabsenceforthetest.Nopenaltyshallbeincurredunderthoseacceptableconditionsofanexcusedabsencelistedabove.

UNEXCUSED ABSENCES 1. Anunexcusedabsenceisanyabsenceinwhichthestudenthasnotmadecontact,madeprior

CLINICAL ABSENCES Studentswhohavemissedanyclinicalorcollegelaboratoryexperiencewillbebroughttotheattentionofthecoursecoordinatorbytheclinicalfacultyforreview.

• Availabilityofclinicalmake-uptimecannotbeguaranteed.ThecoursecoordinatorandProgramDirectorwilldetermineavailability.Intheeventtimesarenotavailable,thestudentwillbenotifiedandreceiveanunsatisfactorygradeifcoursecompetenciesarenotmet.

• Whenmake-upclinicaltimeisrequiredoutsideoftheregularlyscheduledclinicaltime,astudentmaybeassessedafeebasedonthecurrentsalarystructureforNebraskaMedicine.

• Clinicalexperienceisanessentialcomponentofnursing.Apatternofabsenceswillresultinfailuretomeetnotonlycoursecompetenciesbutachieveprogramprogression.ThestudentmaybeaskedtowithdraworbeadministrativelywithdrawnfromtheNursingprogram.

Professional Conduct

Inherentintheprofessionofnursingarevaluesthataredemonstratedthroughprofessionalconduct.Examplesofprofessionalvaluesincludedemonstratingacommitmenttonursing,demonstratingcooperationandcollaboration,placingtheclient’swelfarefirst,exhibitingpersonalaswellasintellectualresponsibility,andadheringtotheNursingprogramandclinicalfacilitypolicies.Theseareareasbywhichthestudentisevaluatedintheareaofprofessionalconduct. InkeepingwiththephilosophyofClarksonCollege,astudentisexpectedtoexhibitprofessionalbehaviorwhenperformingnursingactivitiesorrepresentingtheNursingprograminanycapacity.Thestudentisexpectedtofollowthe“CodeofConduct”identifiedintheClarksonCollegeAcademicCatalog.PROFESSIONAL CONDUCT COMMITMENTTONURSINGWhenintheclinicalareaoranyclinicalexperience,thestudentshouldbeidentifiedasaClarksonCollegestudentbyproperuniform,and/oridentificationaslistedintheDressCodePolicy.Thestudentisexpectedtoexhibitaprofessionalmanner,whichincludesbutisnotlimitedtohavinganeat,cleanappearanceandutilizingappropriatelanguageandbehavior.ThestudentwillbeidentifiedasaClarksonCollegeNursingstudentwhencompletingofficialagencyrecordsorforms(e.g.bywritingJ.SmithSN1CC,SN2,SN3,SN4).AdditionaltitlesmaynotbeusedwheninastudentroleunlessastudentisalreadyanRNandcurrentlyenrolledintheRNtoBSNprogram.

• ThestudentisplacedonAcademicIntegrityprobationforhis/hersecondviolationtotheAcademicIntegritypolicy.Anotationisplacedinthestudent’sfiletoserveasanalerttothestudentthathis/heracademicbehaviorisunacceptableandtoimpresstheimportanceofgivingseriousattentiontohis/heracademicintegritybehaviorinordertocontinuebeingastudentatClarksonCollege.

• ThestudentwillremainonAcademicIntegrityprobationuntilgraduation.Atthislevel,thestudentmustmeetwiththeProgramDirectortodiscusstheAcademicIntegritypolicyandremediateasappropriate.TheProgramDirectormustdocumentwhatremediationwasgiven.THIRDVIOLATION:DISMISSALFROMTHECOLLEGETheofficeoftheVPAAwillsendalettertothestudentinforminghim/herofthethirdAcademicIntegrityviolationanddismissalfromtheCollege.AcademicIntegritypolicyviolationsthatinvolvesubstantialdishonesty,pre-mediationanddisregardfortheAcademicIntegritypolicymaywarrantamoreseveresanctionregardlessofpriorviolation.DUE PROCESS AcademicIntegrityissuesshouldberesolvedatthelowestlevelpossible.However,whenastudentdisagreeswithafacultymemberregardingtheissueofAcademicIntegrity,thestudenthasfivebusinessdaystosubmitanappealinwritingtotheVPAA.Ifthestudentfailstomeettheeabovedeadlineforappealingadecision,thestandingdecisionisfinal.TheVPAAwillconvenetheAcademicIntegritycommitteetoreviewtheappealwithin15businessdaysoftherequest.InacknowledgementoftheCodeofConductandAcademicIntegritypolicy,allUndergraduateNursingstudentsarerequiredtosigntheUndergraduateNursingProgramHonorPledgefoundattheendofthishandbook.ViewthefullAcademicIntegritypolicy.

Personal Appearance

Asastudentyourepresent,notonlyClarksonCollege,butalsotheprofessionalimageofnursing.ThefollowingareexpectationsofthepersonalappearanceofaClarksonCollegeNursingstudent.DRESS CODE POLICY

1. Hair:Studentsmusthavehumancoloredhair.Extremelookssuchasmultiplecolors;extremesinbleaching,dyeingortinting;orshavedeyebrowsarenotappropriate.Hairmustbecleanandpulledbackfromthefacesoasnottofallforwardwhilegivingpatientcare.Beardsormoustachesformenwillbeneatlytrimmed.

2. Make-up:Ifworn,istobeconservativeandnotdetractfromtheattire,uniformorworkenvironmentandmustreflectaprofessionalimage.

3. Nails:Needtobesmooth,ofamoderatelengthandclean.Artificialnails,nailpolish/productsarenottobewornbyanyonewithresponsibilityforhand-onpatientcare,astheyareaninfectioncontrolrisk.

4. Jewelry:Decorativejewelryistobeconservativeandnotdetractfromtheattireorworkenvironmentandmustnotposeasafety/infectionrisk.Jewelryshouldbeminimal.Studentsareallowed:

• Nomorethanoneringperhand(unlessotherwisestatedbytheclinicalagency).Plain-typeweddingbandsarepreferred.

• Nopiercingsonthebodyarepermittedwiththeexceptionofonepost/studtypeearringonthelowerearlobe.

• Bodypiercings(otherthantheonepiercingallowedinthelowerearlobe)willberemovedforallclinicalsettingsandexperiences.CoveringupbodypiercingswithBand-Aidsorothertypesofconcealingmethods(i.e.:clearspacers,retainersormake-up)arenotpermitted.Thisincludessurgicallyimplantedjewelry.

• Onesmallnecklacethatfitssnugtoneckorisabletobetuckedintoashirtispermitted.Danglingnecklacesareasafetyissue.

5. Aftershave,cologneandperfume:Willbeappliedsparingly,aspatient’ssensitivitytoscents/odorsmustbeconsideredatalltimes.

6. Tattoos:Visibletattoosarenotallowed.Ifastudenthastattoo(s),clothingmustcompletelycoverthetattoo(s)orapplyaconcealingitemifinanareathatclothingdoesnotcover.

7. Personalcleanliness:Dailyattentiontoone’spersonalhygieneisanextremelyimportantcomponentofeachstudent’soverallimage.Studentswillmaintainahighlevelofpersonalhygiene.Students’breathandclothing/labcoatsmustnotsmellofsmoke.
