Theatre Program Mission The mission of the BA Theatre Arts Program at Cal Poly is to provide students with a foundation in the theory and practice of theatre. By providing academic instruction, hands-on activities, and supervised training, majors will develop knowledge of the various aspects of theatre: history, dramatic literature, playwriting, performing, production, directing, design, and administrative practices. The program is delivered within a Liberal Arts framework, intended to advance the value of collaboration at all levels of study; designed to not only produce theatre artists with strong written and verbal skills, but also globally-minded citizens, prepared to enter into a variety of fields.

4,000 Miles written by Amy Herzog

November 2–4, 9–11 While biking across America, 21 year-old Leo experiences a horrific event. Arriving in New York City, Leo spends a month with his feisty 91 year-old grandmother. Together, the pair navigates a maze of heartbreak, humor and healing.

‘80s Mix Tape Orchesis Dance Concert

January 19–20, 25–27 ‘80s Mix Tape is the Cal Poly Orchesis Dance Company’s 48th Annual Performance. A concert theme such as the 1980s is a first for Orchesis, and it requires that all ten choreographers create dances to music recorded between 1980 and 1989. Cabbage Patch your way down memory lane while watching modern, ballet, musical theatre, and jazz pieces made by Cal Poly faculty and students, as well as guest artists from SLO, West Virginia, and New York City.

The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui written by Bertolt Brecht, translated by Jennifer Wise

March 1–3, 8–10 1930s Chicago – the Great Depression has laid waste to the city’s grocery business. Along comes Arturo Ui to make a name for himself. Together, with his gang of thugs, Ui’s offer of small-time protection quickly transform into a menacing grab for absolute power. Bertolt Brecht’s historical parable in the form of an old-fashioned gangster play, The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui is a clever and frightening satire about the rise of a demagogue; a compelling, cautionary tale ripe for our current time.

Hookman written by Lauren Yee May 10–12, 17–19

Transitioning from home to university can prove challenging—especially when facing homesickness, roommate relationships…and an urban legend stalking those around you. Lauren Yee’s “existential slasher comedy” follows a group of women as they navigate their freshman year of college; exploring significant issues confronting college students today in a manner that is simultaneously familiar and surreal.

Advising FAQ’sWhat is advising?

Advising can be considered active engagement with your education. It is a way in which students and advisors work/communicate together about courses and academic plans in order to aide graduating on time.

Why should I seek advising?

In addition to helping students monitor their progress to degree, advising is a way in which students can constantly stay in touch with changes to curriculum requirements, look into course substitutions, explore internship and study abroad opportunities, as well as, if necessary, talk about changing majors.

Who are my advisors?

The department has assigned each student a particular faculty advisor. In addition, the College of Liberal Arts has specific advisors dedicated to serve all majors. The chair of the department are also resources to consult.

When should I seek help from an advisor?

Students should see their advisor at least once a quarter. When students are exploring options such as changing majors, substitutions, study abroad, and the like, a meeting with an advisor should be scheduled. Additionally, checking-in with an advisor regularly can help students stay up-to-date with current departmental, college and university policies, procedures and schedules.

Where can I find my advisors?

Theatre Program advisors can be accessed in their office, via email or phone, as well as by also consulting with the Department ASC.

Where do you look before seeing an advisor about classes and course requirements?

All departments at Cal Poly track each major’s academic status every quarter. This includes both grades and progress through the major curriculum. However, you still need to keep up with your status via Poly Profile as well as your Degree Progress Report (DPR). These links can be found on your my.calpoly.edu portal Ultimately, it is your responsibility to manage your academic career here at Cal Poly

College of Liberal Arts advisors can be found in Bldg. 47, Room 22B email: [email protected]; phone: 805-756-6200

Advising FAQ’s

What courses can I substitute for others?

• Course substitutions are made on a case-by-case basis and in circumstances of extreme need. Please see your academic advisor for information.

I want to drop a class that I’m enrolled in. If I just stop attending, is that sufficient? • No! To officially drop a class during the eight (8) day add/drop

period at the beginning of each quarter, you must do so in PASS.

• If you need to withdraw from a course later in the quarter, you must have a documented “serious and compelling reason.”

• Please see your theatre arts faculty advisor before you attempt to withdraw from any Cal Poly course after the second week of instruction.

Can I take any TH courses more than once? • The following are the only theatre arts classes that can be repeated

for credit:

1. TH305 (Topics in Diversity...) – 8 units

2. TH325 (Costume Construction II) – 8 units

3. TH330 (Stagecraft II) – 8 units

4. TH341 (Advanced Acting Studio) – 12 units

5. TH345 (Rehearsal & Performance) – 12 units

6. TH400 (Special Problems) – 1-8 units

7. TH480 (Internship) – 8 units

If I do poorly – or fail – any Cal Poly course, what can I do? • Undergraduate students cannot repeat courses in which they have

earned a C or better grade.

• Undergraduate students may repeat a maximum of 16 units at Cal Poly for purposes of improving their GPA. If the second grade is equal to or higher than the first, then it replaces the first grade. The original grade is "forgiven" from the GPA computation, but both grades appear on the student's transcript.

• A course is eligible for grade forgiveness one time only. Consecutive attempts beyond the second attempt are averaged into the GPA along with the second attempt while the grade from the first attempt remains forgiven.

• Students may repeat an additional 18 units in addition to the 16 units for which grade forgiveness is permitted. Once the 16 unit forgiveness limit is reached, the grade from the repeat attempt shall not replace the original grade; instead both grades shall be calculated into the overall GPA.

• Once students accumulate 34 units (16 units with forgiveness + 18 units with averaging) of repeated courses, they will no longer be allowed to repeat any future courses.

Can I take a course Credit/No Credit; in other words, I get the units, but not a letter grade? • Yes. A student is eligible to take a MAXIMUM of sixteen (16) units as

CR/NC.

Which TH major or support course can I take Credit/No Credit?

• You may not take any Theatre Arts (TH) required or elective course CR/NC with the exception of TH101 or TH480, which are designated CR/NC classes.

• If you want to take a support course (i.e., ARCH 217, etc.) CR/NC, please see your faculty advisor.

Can I take a GE course Credit/No Credit? • Yes. A student may take a four (4) unit GE class CR/NC.

Can I change into another major or double major?

• Students must complete at least one (1) quarter at Cal Poly before requesting a change or addition of major.

What is the process for changing my major?

• Meet with current Theatre advisor to review major options and talk about career paths. Consider, also, consulting with Career Services, other advisors, and faculty and/or department heads/chairs in both Theatre and potential target majors.

• Meet with the department head/chair or designee in the target major to determine the likelihood of success in the new major.

• Review the curriculum requirements for the target major.

• If the target major is not a good fit for the student, the student will be advised to look at other options.

• If the student receives a positive assessment based on consideration of the basic target major criteria and it is clear that he/she can complete degree requirements in the new major within a timely fashion, then an ICMA will be developed.

• Students who enter into an individualized change of major agreement (ICMA) and do not complete the ICMA requirements will not be eligible to request that major again later in their career at Cal Poly.

• The change of major will be approved once the student has successfully met all of the requirements of the ICMA.

• The ICMA must be feasible to complete and be completed in no more than two (2) quarters.

• A change of major agreement will be void if a student is academically disqualified prior to the completion of the agreement.

• The change of major will be approved once the student has successfully met all of the requirements of the ICMA.

How do I get credit for the Graduate Writing Exam (GWR)? • Enrolling in ENGL339 Shakespeare takes care of this requirement.

• You must be at junior status (90 units) to receive credit.

Advising FAQ’s

When is my expected Graduation Term?

• When students reach 75% or more of degree completion, as indicated on their Academic Progress gauge on Poly Profile, the Office of the Registrar will input an expected graduation term for them that is one year away. Students will receive an email from [email protected], informing them that this expected grad term has been set for them, and that they are expected to graduate within four quarters.

• The expected graduation term can be viewed in the Student Center and Poly Profile. Students are not able to register beyond their expected graduation term.

• However, there may be some very legitimate reasons why some students need to extend this graduation term beyond the one that is automatically set for them. Students with such academically or personally justifiable reasons to extend their graduation term can fill out the Change of Degree Completion Term Form and see their advisor for possible approval of the request to extend.

• Once you have been notified that your graduation term has been set, you should access your Degree Progress Report each time you register, to ensure that you are fulfilling the requirements for your degree. If you have any questions about your degree requirements, you should see your advisor.

What is Academic Probation?

• Undergraduate students are automatically placed on academic probation when the current term grade point average (unadjusted for any subsequent grade forgiveness), Cal Poly cumulative grade point average, and/or higher education grade point average (GPA) drops below 2.000 (i.e., the equivalent of an average grade of C).

• Students are notified promptly via campus email by the Office of the Registrar if placed on academic probation. Students are responsible for checking their campus email accounts regularly.

What is Academic Disqualification?

• Undergraduate students will be placed on academic disqualification status if their Cal Poly cumulative GPA (CPSLO GPA) or their higher education GPA (Higher Ed GPA) falls below the following academic progress level GPA limits based on the corresponding academic progress levels (degree applicable work completed):

Academic Progress Levels & Academic Progress Level GPA Limits:

Academic Progress Level IV (75.1%-100%): 1.950 Cal Poly Cumulative or Higher Ed GPA

Academic Progress Level III (45.1%-75%): 1.850 Cal Poly Cumulative or Higher Ed GPA

Academic Progress Level II (20.1%-45%): 1.700 Cal Poly Cumulative or Higher Ed GPA

Academic Progress Level I (0%-20%): 1.500 Cal Poly Cumulative or Higher Ed GPA

• New Student Success Clause: To allow for an adjustment period, first-time freshmen and new transfer students will not be placed on academic disqualification status until the end of the first academic year even if their GPA falls below the designated academic progress level GPA limits.

How would I be notified of Academic Disqualification?

• Students who fall into academic disqualification status will be notified via email from the Office of the Registrar before the beginning of the next quarter.  Their academic status will also show on their student portal, in their Poly Profile. Failure to notify students does not create the right to continue enrollment.

• Students will not be dismissed due to academic disqualification status at the end of the winter quarter. Those students who fall into academic disqualification status at the end of winter quarter will be placed on an academic success contract that, if successfully met, may result in permission to continue beyond spring quarter.

• However, students who are placed on an academic success contract at the end of fall quarter and who fail to meet the conditions of their contract will be dismissed at the end of winter quarter.

What is Administrative-Academic Probation?

• Undergraduate students may be placed on administrative-academic probation by action of the dean of the college in which the students’ declared major resides for any of the following reasons:

• Withdrawal from all or a substantial portion of courses in two successive terms or in any three terms. (Note: students who are on an approved leave of absence is not subject to administrative-academic probation for such withdrawal.)

• Repeated failure to make Expected Academic Progress (as defined in the Academic Standards section of the Cal Poly Catalog) toward the stated degree or program objective when such failure appears to be due to circumstances within the control of the student.

• Failure to comply, after due notice, with an academic requirement or regulation which is routine for all students or a defined group of students (for example, failure to complete a required CSU or campus examination, failure to complete a required practicum, failure to comply with professional standards appropriate to the field of study, failure to complete a specified number of units as a condition for receiving student financial aid or making satisfactory progress in the academic program).

How will I know if I’ve been put on Administrative-Academic Probation?

• When such action is taken, students are notified via campus email and are provided with the conditions for removal from probation and the circumstances that would lead to disqualification, should probation not be removed.

Who else can I contact for questions and/or information?

• Josh Machamer, TH Department chair @ 756-5560

• CLA Advising Center, Bldg. 47, Room 22B, 756-6200 or [email protected]

Students’ Stage Students’ Stage is a student run theatre organization established in 2007. Their work is student written, produced, directed, and/or performed. They provide peers with more writing/directing/acting opportunities, technical education and experience, theatre business entrepreneurship, and a new forum for original work. Students’ Stage is for anyone, no matter what major! Performances every quarter in Room 212. For further information, please go to http://theatredance.calpoly.edu/students/students-stage

Smile and Nod (Improvisational Comedy)

An approximately 20 member group, composed of several different majors, performs short and long form improvisation, sketch, as well as standup comedy. Saturday evening performances in Philips Hall regularly each quarter. Auditions the first Saturday of every quarter. For further information, go to www.smileandnod.org

General Scholarship Information Scholarships are awarded each year (end of Spring Quarter). All incoming students are automatically considered for scholarships for which they qualify. However, for need-based scholarships, completing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is required. For priority consideration for financial aid programs and Cal Poly scholarships, complete the FAFSA by March 2. Selection for scholarships is made based on information from the admission application and/or the FAFSA for new students.

Beatrice Rice Scholarship Awarded annually to a Theatre major or minor with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. who demonstrates both financial need and service to the Theatre Program.

• Students must file a FASFA to be eligible for this scholarship. No formal application required.
