1. Introduction to the course

1.1 Welcome and Introduction to the course

Congratulations on gaining a place to study Counselling and Psychotherapy Studies at UCLan and welcome! This handbook contains important information for all students on the BA (Hons) Counselling and Psychotherapy Studies and is structured in such a way that it will address most of your issues in the form of key questions. Please read it carefully in conjunction with the University’s Student Regulations for 2015/2016 as well as the School of Community Health and Midwifery Student Handbook. You will also receive other written information throughout your period of study. In addition, staff managing or teaching the course will also give you information from time to time and be willing to address your questions. If you are unsure about anything relating to your course, please consult your handbook first (as the answers are likely to be found here) or you could contact your Course Leader or Academic advisor. Messages may be left in the School Office, or by telephoning or e-mailing your Academic advisor (see Staff Details, other relevant contact details will be appended, or will be found on the website). Staff will be pleased to receive your comments on any aspect of the course. There will be regular formal opportunities for student feedback, but please do use the informal channels so that any problems can be dealt with promptly.

Introduction to the Course

The BA (Hons) Counselling and Psychotherapy Studies offered at the University of Central Lancashire is designed for people who wish to study counselling and psychotherapy and who may wish to consider either a future career in counselling or who wish to enhance their counselling skills ability for use within their existing or future employment. The course itself is NOT a qualification to practice as, we believe, counsellors/psychotherapists should be qualified at Postgraduate level if they are to be seen as credible working alongside GP’s, psychiatrists, psychologists and mental health nurses who will all have postgraduate qualifications. Therefore, upon completion of this degree, there is the option of progressing onto the Postgraduate Diploma/MA Professional Counselling which is accredited by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). Candidates are expected to have an interest in people and wish to develop their abilities to both understand and communicate with others. Students will be encouraged to develop reflexive skills and will be able to reflect on all aspects of their work as learners and as members of the course. As a Student you must take responsibility for your own learning and it is important that you develop the ability to monitor and evaluate your own work and personal development. You will have assistance in developing these skills from your academic advisor.

“Hello! My name is Marie Percival and I am your Course Leader. Whilst I am available for course

related issues there will be occasions in which you will need some tutorial support. This will be

provided by your academic advisor. You will be notified at the beginning of your studies who this

person will be. You are expected to meet with them on a regular basis as they will be able to offer

you advice regarding your written work, your programme of study as well as to offer more personal

support. Their contact details can be found above in Section 1.3 Course Team.

At an absolute minimum you are expected to meet with them on at least 4 occasions although, in

reality this is often much more. We each publicise our availability for which you can come and sign

up to a particular session, or you can email us to arrange a meeting.

Campus Admin Services provides academic administration support for students and staff and are open from

8.45am until 5.15pm Monday to Thursday and until 4.00pm on Fridays. The hub can provide general

assistance and advice regarding specific processes such as extenuating circumstances, extensions and

1.6 Communication

The University expects you to use your UCLan email address and check regularly for messages from staff. If you send us email messages from other addresses they risk being filtered out as potential spam and discarded unread.

1.7 External Examiner

The University has appointed an External Examiner to your course who helps to ensure that

the standards of your course are comparable to those provided at other higher education

institutions in the UK. The name of this person, their position and home institution can be

found below. If you wish to make contact with your External Examiner, you should do this

through your Course Leader and not directly. External Examiner reports will be made

available to you electronically. The School will also send a sample of student coursework to the

external examiner(s) for external moderation purposes, once it has been marked and internally

moderated by the course tutors. The sample will include work awarded the highest and lowest

marks and awarded marks in the middle range.

The name of the External Examiner is Heather Dale who is a Senior Lecturer from the University of

Huddersfield. You will be able to access the Annual External Examiners Report for the preceding

2. Structure of the course

2.1 Overall structure

In order to complete the BA (Hons) Counselling & Psychotherapy Studies you are required to

complete 360 credits (120 credits in each of the three ‘years’ of the course). Each of the modules

in the degree is counted as a full module, worth 20 credits. Each year is presented as a table.

2.2 Modules available

2.2.1 Progression

Progression refers to a process which allows you to move from Stage one to Stage 2 and from year to year of the full time course. There will be an announced Progression Talk held in February/March each year following which you should make an appointment with your Academic advisor to discuss any issues that you might have and to also agree your Module Content for the following Academic Year. It is an opportunity for you to make plans for your study over the next academic year. The course team will tell you about the various modules / combinations available and you will both agree on the most appropriate (and legal) course of study for you.

2.3 Study Time

2.3.2 Expected hours of study

The normal amount of work involved in achieving a successful outcome to your studies is to study for 10 hours per each credit you need to achieve (each standard module is a 20 credit module) – this includes attendance at UCLan and time spent in private study. As the saying goes ‘you are reading for a degree’. Therefore you can therefore expect to study for a minimum of 200 hours per module, to get the most out of this course. There will be 24-60 hours of direct tutor contact (dependent up[on which module is currently being studied) which will incorporate a balance of classroom-based lectures/learning activities and individual practice-based skills development together with individual or group seminars to assess skills development. Skills development will be undertaken in dyads or triads (groups of 2-3) and will be undertaken in one of the counselling/psychotherapy designated rooms. These rooms are equipped with recording equipment and moveable seating. As an undergraduate you will be expected to spend some time (approximately 6 hours per module) each week reading in support of your learning as well as to prepare for the forthcoming classes. In addition you will be expected to spend some time each week reflecting on your learning and skills development, in your Personal Learning Journal, which will be guided by criteria that we will explain to you at induction. It is also anticipated that you will need to invest a substantial amount of time towards completing each assignment. During Year 1, each module will involve a total of 60 hours of lectures, seminars and tutorials. The required hours becomes less each year. The remainder of the hours should comprise time spend reading in readiness for your classes as well as to support and develop your learning after classes. As you are ‘Reading for a Degree’ there is an expectation that you will continue with your own studies by reading approximately 6 hours per module per week. During year 2 you will be required to take on a 40 hours non-counselling placement in order to help you develop your interpersonal/listening skills.

2.3.3 Attendance Requirements

You are required to attend all timetabled learning activities for each module and you should aim for 100% attendance. Notification of illness or exceptional requests for leave of absence must be made to Marie Percival (Course Leader) or Peter Cardew (Deputy Course Leader). If you are a non-EU , or international student, then it is your responsibility to record you attendance under the Visas and Immigration (UKVI) Points Based System (PBS) - you MUST attend your course of study regularly; under PBS, UCLan is obliged to tell UKVI if you withdraw from a course, defer or suspend your studies, or if you fail to attend the course regularly. If you have not gained the required authorisation for leave of absence, do not respond to communications from the University and if you are absent for four weeks or more, you may be deemed to have withdrawn from the course. If this is the case, then the date of withdrawal will be recorded as the last day of attendance. Your attendance will be monitored through SAM (Student Assessment Monitoring) and you can check your attendance record through MyUCLan. Each time you are asked to enter your details on SAM you must remember that the University has a responsibility to keep information up to date and that you must only enter your own details on

the system. To enter any other names would result in inaccurate records and be dishonest. Any student who is found to make false entries can be disciplined under the student guide to regulations.

2.4 Data Protection

All of the personal information obtained from you and other sources in connection with your studies at the University will be held securely and will be used by the University both during your course and after you leave the University for a variety of purposes. These are all explained during the enrolment process at the commencement of your studies. 2.5 How will you know what elective/option modules you can study?

As much of the degree comprises compulsory modules there are limited opportunities to take an

elective/option module. The choices that you have are within Year 1 (an elective module) and Year

3 (an option module). To assist you in choosing your Free Choice elective or Option modules you

will have an Introductory Talk (during the first week of year 1) and Progression Talks during the final

few weeks of year 1 and year 2.

During the Year 1 Introductory talk you will have the course explained to you and you will be able to

choose a module from within the University’s Electives Catalogue (accessed via MyUCLan) which

can be of direct relevance to your course or, it is your chance to diversify your learning and you can

choose something else which may be of interest to you. During the latter part of years 1 and 2

(usually during March), you will have a Progression Talk to explain what you will study in years 2

3. Approaches to teaching and learning

3.1 Expertise of staff

You will be taught by lecturers who are not just experienced educators but are also current and experienced counselling/psychotherapy practitioners in their own right. All the counselling/psychotherapy lecturers are accredited/senior accredited members of a variety of counselling/psychotherapy bodies (e.g. BACP – British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy; COSRT – College of Sexual & Relationship Therapists; UKCP – United Kingdom Council of Psychotherapy; BABCP – British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapy). Your Course Leader (Marie Percival) is a member of IACP (Irish Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy) and PSI (Psychological Society of Ireland). The team are all educated to Masters degree, or PhD, level with one member currently undertaking their PhD. In addition all the counselling/psychotherapy lecturers are committed to the advancement of the profession and to the development of research to both support and develop our practice. As a part of this the counselling/psychotherapy lecturers have a number of publications in related areas of counselling work.

With regards to areas of expertise within counselling and psychotherapy Robin Bailey is a trained Person-Centred and CBT psychotherapist; Nick Bohannon is a trained Solution-Focussed therapist; Peter Cardew is a trained Integrative and Person-Centred Counsellor and CBT trained psychosexual psychotherapist (he also works for BACP on their Professional Conduct Panel); Richard Davis is a Psychoanalyst and trained Person-Centred IAPT therapist; Rick Fothergill is a trained Person-Centred and CBT psychotherapist; Amanda Ryding is a trained Person-Centred therapist; Sarah Traill is a trained CBT therapist; Jacquie Williams is a trained Person-Centred therapist and; Lesley Wilson is a trained Person-Centred therapist and child therapist.

3.2 Learning and teaching methods

You will experience a variety of teaching methods that range from lectures, presentations, experiential work; skills work; seminars; to discussion groups in which you will be expected to contribute based upon your reading and experience. You will also be encouraged to develop a good relationship with your groups as your group members will contribute much to what you learn. Within your skills groups you will be encouraged to develop and experience the three expected roles of speaker, listener and observer and to develop a contract based upon an agreed way of working. This will form the basis of how you will develop your skills work and which will be recorded using digital camcorders. Each module will hold an early induction session to assist you in recognising the teaching methods and to develop, where appropriate, a set of ground rules to assist with this process. Individual tutorials will be utilised to assist you in your academic development and assessment of your skills development and you will be encouraged to maintain a personal learning journal in order to develop a reflective way of your own learning and development, something that is normal in counsellor education. You are responsible for requesting tutorials whenever you feel the need (i.e. when you are struggling with understanding particular theories/lecture topics; to clarify assignment based issues; whenever you have a personal need to discuss a personal matter…).

3.4 Learning resources

3.4.1 Learning Information Services (LIS)

Extensive resources are available to support your studies provided by LIS – library and IT staff. Take advantage of the free training sessions designed to enable you to gain all the skills you need for your research and study. LIS provide an informative subject guide for Counselling and Psychotherapy Studies which will assist you in your studies as books may be found in up to 27 different areas of the library under the Dewey decimal classification system. However there are also a large number of counselling resources/books that can be obtained via ebooks (meaning no fines and instant access) which can be accessed via the Student Portal and Electronic Resources (http://www.uclan.ac.uk/students/study/library/electronic_resources.php). In addition there are a number of on-line databases (i.e. Psycharticles, PsycINFO, Proquest, Medline, Cinahl...) that will assist you in your studies and which can be obtained from the library on-line (http://www.uclan.ac.uk/students/library/e_databases.php). Please also see section 3.4.2.

3.4.2 Electronic Resources

LIS provide access to a huge range of electronic resources – e-journals and databases, e-books, images and texts. Many journals are now available electronically through this site. In particular the journal of BACP (Therapy Today, and Counselling and Psychotherapy Research – CPR) are available in this way. Further information with a more comprehensive list of popular journals will be made available from Blackboard.

In addition BACP publicise a compendium of their published journal articles and which is available through their website and the links to http://www.therapytoday.net/ and the up-to-date archive of material.

3.4.3 Electronic Recording Resources

The counselling courses are fortunate to have the use of 4 bespoke rooms that are equipped for skills development via the use of digital camcorders, proximal zone microphones (PZM’s) as well as play back means.

The School of Community Health and Midwifery also has access to a large number of hand-held

digital camcorders which can be used in a variety of university locations and, in addition, you will be

3.5 Personal development planning (PDP)

PDP is defined as ‘a structured and supported process undertaken by an individual to reflect upon their own learning, performance and/or achievement and to plan for their personal educational and career development.’ Personal development planning is centred on student development and seeks to assist you in understanding what, how and when you are learning; it encourages you to monitor, review, plan and take responsibility for your own learning. It is meant to help you:

• understand how you are learning and to relate your learning to a wider context; • improve your general skills for study and career management; • articulate your personal goals and evaluate progress towards their achievement; and • encourage a positive attitude to learning throughout your life and career.

As such you will find that PDP is:

• a structured process that is integral to learning at a higher level; • concerned with learning in an holistic sense (both academic and non-academic); • something that an individual does with guidance and support: the latter perhaps decreasing as personal capability is developed so that it becomes self-sustaining; • a process that involves self-reflection, the creation of personal records, planning and monitoring Progress towards the achievement of personal objectives;

This is achieved through a number of means but primarily it is about you taking responsibility for

what you are learning and in your own personal reflection of this learning. You will also have regular

and detailed contact with your tutor through meetings and, for which, you should come prepared to

discuss your own personal development.

Your Options

It is never too early to start this process so the Recruitment half day is open to first, second and third year students.

1. Having studied counselling & psychotherapy there is no great surprise in that one of your options is to apply to the professional training on the UCLan PGDip/MA Integrative Psychotherapy (BACP accredited);

2. If you have particularly enjoyed the CBT element of the degree then you can apply for NHS

jobs that involve IAPT (Improving Access to Psychological Therapies) input. If you are successful at interview then you get a job AND secondment onto the IAPT programme!

3. If you want to use your knowledge of therapeutic interventions then, courses such as the MSc Mental Health Nursing or MA Social Work might be of interest to you.

4. There are also a range of jobs/careers that are available to graduates and are not dependent upon the subject of your degree.

4. Student support, guidance and conduct

You will have a range of different support systems in place during your degree. You will be

allocated a Academic advisor who will be available for you to meet on a regular basis; there

is a central student resource centre known as The ‘I’; there are resources available for

students with disabilities; there is a resource for Health and Safety; there are guidelines on

your conduct and behavious; and the support available via the Student Union.

4.1 Academic advisors

In our role as your Academic advisor you are encouraged to see the named tutor as your first point

of contact to do with anything relating to the academic side of your course or for more pastoral

matters (i.e. personal and supportive matters outside of the course direct).

The academic side to this role relates to our role in assisting you to develop your studies, to help

you make sense of the course material and to help you make the most of your course. We will help

you develop your academic style of writing, to plan for assignments and make sense of assignment

feedback but may, at times, refer you to other points of contact within the university who can assist

in this process. NB. If you want assistance with your academic work it is always helpful if you come

you are bringing some work towards an assignment, please be aware that we are only permitted to

comment on up to a maximum of 10% of the word count.

We are also be the first point of contact for pastoral issues however, if you refer to section 4.2 there

are also a number of other specialised support services available through the Student Academic

Support Service.

We each publicise our availability which can be found usually on our office doors and you are

welcome to come and put your name down for a meeting.

4.2 Student Support

The 'i' is a central Student Information Centre and your first point of contact. You can obtain information on a wide range of topics including Council Tax Exemption Certificates, Bank and Confirmation of Study Letters, Portable Financial Credits, (continuing students only, Printing and Printer Credit, UCLan Cards, the ‘i’ shop and UCLan Financial Support Bursary (first year students only).

4.3 Students with disabilities

If you have a disability that may affect your studies, please either contact the Disability Advisory Service - [email protected] - or let one of the course team know as soon as possible. With your agreement information will be passed on to the Disability Advisory Service. The University will make reasonable adjustments to accommodate your needs and to provide appropriate support for you to complete your study successfully. 4.4 Health and Safety

As a student of the University you are responsible for the safety of yourself and for that of others around you. Please help to keep it safe by reporting any incidents, accidents or potentially unsafe situations to a member of staff as soon as possible. Safety assessments have been undertaken for each module of your course and you will be advised of all applicable safety codes and any specific safety issues during the induction to your course and modules. You must ensure that you understand and apply all necessary safety codes. These form an essential element of your personal development and contribute to the safety of others.

4.5 Conduct

You will be expected to abide by the Regulations for the Conduct of Students in the University. UCLan expects you to behave in a respectful manner demonstrated by using appropriate language in class, and switching mobile phones / other devices off prior to attending classes. If your behaviour is considered to be unacceptable, any member of staff is able to issue an informal oral warning and the University will support staff by invoking formal procedures where necessary. You can read more about UCLan expectations in the regulations for the Conduct of Students.

4.6 Students’ Union

The Students’ Union is the representative body for all UCLan students. The organisation exists separately from the University and is led by the elected officers of the Student Affairs Committee (SAC) as well as representatives on the Students’ Council. The Students’ Union building is located at the heart of the Preston campus, and is the hub for all student activities. Representation and campaigning for students’ rights is at the core of what we do and is encompassed by our tag line of, Making Life Better for Students. Should you wish to make a change to any aspect of your student experience, whether it be academically related or not, then the Union is where your voice can be heard, actions taken, or campaigns launched. Your Union is also the home to a fantastic range of student-led societies, sports teams and multitudes of volunteering opportunities. You can also receive help in finding part-time work, whilst you study. Not sure where to go pop into the Opportunities Centre on the ground floor of the Students’ Union building and someone will point you in the right direction. 5. Assessment

Please note that all modules will be assessed. You are expected to attempt all required assessments for each module for which you are registered, and to do so at the times scheduled unless authorised extensions, special arrangements for disability, or extenuating circumstances allow you to defer your assessment.

5.1 Assessment Strategy

Each module has its own unique assessment strategy that is matched against the modular learning

outcomes. You are advised, when undertaking each element, to reflect on the modular learning

outcomes to ensure that you only answer what has been asked for. Several Modules have more

than one component to their Assessment Strategy and it is your responsibility to ensure that you

submit all components on time. At the beginning of each Module you will have an Assessment

5.2 Notification of assignments and examination arrangements

Detailed information relating to each assignment will be given to all students via an Assignment

Briefing during the first few weeks of the course and will also be recorded and made available

through the relevant Module Handbook on Blackboard. This will also detail the marking criteria to

be used.

Most work is submitted via ‘Turnitin’ on Blackboard and, for which, you will be given a clear deadline

for when the work must be submitted via the Module Handbook. You will be responsible for checking

for any signs of plagiarism but which will be included in a seminar during the early weeks of CG1030.

There will be very clear guidelines given for the work and the marking grid for the critical evaluation

is available in the School Student Handbook – Appendix 3.

All work submitted should be submitted by 12 midday unless otherwise agreed with the Module

Leaders.

5.3 Referencing

For further details of preferred referencing style please go to the School Student Handbook – Section

B7.0 where you will find guidelines for the APA style of referencing, how to incorporate it as well as

the regulations about plagiarism and how to avoid it.

For those of you with Smart Phones there are a number of ‘Apps’ that will help you in creating

accurate in-text and end text references. Some suggestions are ‘EasyBib’ (remember to select the

APA system when using it!), ‘Reference Me’, ‘Easy APA Referencing’.

5.4 Confidential material

There will be some assignments that involve the use of confidential material and students are reminded of their ethical and legal responsibility when doing so. No identifiable details must be cited in any written work and you are reminded of the need to apply the BACP Ethical Framework to personal information when working on skills based assignments.

5.5 Dealing with difficulties in meeting assessment deadlines

Assignments must be submitted no later than the date on your assignment instructions / brief. If you anticipate that you will have difficulty in meeting assessment deadlines or you have missed or are likely to miss in-semester tests you must report this at the earliest possible opportunity to the Module Leader/Lecturer. If that member of staff is not available then please contact the School Office for the member of the Course Team who is ‘acting up’ on that particular day. Authorisation of the late submission of work requires written permission. Your School is authorised to give permission for one extension period of between 1 and 10 working days where appropriate evidence of good reason has been accepted and where submission within this timescale would be reasonable taking into account your circumstances (Academic Regulations). You should complete and submit an extension request form, with any supporting evidence, to your School office. If you are unable to submit work within 10 working days after the submission date due to verifiable extenuating circumstances, you may submit a case for consideration in accordance with the University’s Policies and Procedures on Extenuating Circumstances (Academic Regulations and Assessment Handbook).

5.5.1 Extenuating circumstances

Some students face significant events in their personal life that occur after their course has started, which have a greater impact on their studies than can be solved by the use of an extension. If this applies to you, the University is ready to support you both with regard to your course and your personal wellbeing through a process called Extenuating Circumstances (see Academic Regulations and Assessment Handbook). Normally extenuating circumstances will relate to a change in your circumstances since you commenced your course, which have had a significant, adverse effect on your studies. Everyday occurrences such as colds or known conditions such as hay-fever will not qualify unless the effects are unusually severe and this is corroborated by a medical note. The University does not look sympathetically on absences or delays caused by holiday commitments or by work commitments in the case of full-time students. The normal work commitments of part-time students would not constitute an extenuating circumstance. A disability or learning difficulty does not constitute an extenuating circumstance (see Academic Regulations). You can apply for extenuating circumstances online via myUCLan. You must apply no later than 3 days after any examination or assessment submission date. Do not wait until you receive your assessment results to submit a claim. It is in your own interests to submit the claim as soon as possible. You will be expected to re-submit claims for extenuating circumstances for each semester. All

evidence that is provided relating to extenuating circumstances will be treated in a sensitive and

confidential manner. Supporting evidence will not be kept for longer than is necessary and will be

destroyed shortly after the end of the current academic year.

In determining assessment recommendations, Assessment Boards will consider properly submitted claims from students who believe their performance has been adversely affected by extenuating circumstances. N.B. Assessment Boards are not permitted to alter individual assessment marks to take account of extenuating circumstances (Academic Regulations and Assessment Handbook).

5.5.2 Late submissions

If you submit work late and unauthorised, a universal penalty will be applied in relation to your work:

If you submit work within 5 working days following the published submission date you will obtain the minimum pass mark (i.e. 40%) for that element of assessment.

Work submitted later than 5 working days after the published submission date will be awarded a mark of 0% for that element of assessment.

Unauthorised late submission at resubmission will automatically be awarded a mark of 0%

for that element of assessment.

5.6 Feedback Following Assessments

UCLan is committed to giving you clear, legible and informative feedback for all your assessments (Academic Regulations). You are expected to review and reflect on your feedback and learn from each experience to improve your performance as you progress though the course. You will be provided with generic feedback for in-module formative and summative elements of assessment which contribute to a module within 15 working days of the scheduled submission or examination date. Generic feedback on end of module assessment and dissertations will be made available within 15 days of publication of results (this date can be found within the relevant Module Handbooks on Blackboard). Feedback is generally via Grademark on Turnitin although it may, in some circumstances, be oral, written, posted on a website or other. For some of the observational assessments you will often be given feedback at the time of the observation/presentation.

5.7 Cheating, plagiarism, collusion or re-presentation

You are required to sign a declaration indicating that individual work submitted for an assessment is your own. If you attempt to influence the standard of the award you obtain through cheating, plagiarism or collusion, it will be considered as a serious academic and disciplinary offence as described within the Academic Regulations and the Assessment Handbook .

Cheating is any deliberate attempt to deceive and covers a range of offences described in the Assessment Handbook.

Plagiarism describes copying from the works of another person without suitably attributing the published or unpublished works of others. This means that all quotes, ideas, opinions, music and images should be acknowledged and referenced within your assignments.

Collusion is an attempt to deceive the examiners by disguising the true authorship of an assignment by copying, or imitating in close detail another student’s work - this includes with the other student’s consent and also when 2 or more students divide the elements of an assignment amongst themselves and copy one another’s answers. It does not include the normal situation in which you learn from your peers and share ideas, as this generates the knowledge and understanding necessary for each individual to independently undertake an assignment; nor should it be confused with group work on an assignment which is specifically authorised in the assignment brief.

Re-presentation is an attempt to gain credit twice for the same piece of work.

The process of investigation and penalties which will be applied can be reviewed in the Assessment Handbook. If an allegation is found to be proven then the appropriate penalty will be implemented: In the case of a single offence of cheating, plagiarism, collusion or re-presentation:

the penalty will be 0% for the element of assessment, and an overall fail for the module.

the plagiarised element of assessment must be resubmitted to the required standard and the mark for the module following resubmission will be restricted to the minimum pass mark.

when it is detected for the first time on a resubmission for an already failed module, no further resubmission for the module will be permitted, and the appropriate fail grade will be awarded.

In the event of a repeat offence of cheating, plagiarism, collusion or re-presentation (irrespective of whether the repeat offence involves the same form of unfair means) on the same or any other module within the course:

the appropriate penalty will be 0% for the module with no opportunity for re-assessment. This penalty does not preclude you being able to retake the module in a subsequent year.

The penalties will apply if you transfer from one UCLan course to another during your period of study and module credits gained on the former course are transferred to the current course. 5.8 Appeals against assessment board decisions

If you consider that you have a reason to appeal against an assessment board decision, please bear in mind that your reasons must fall within the grounds specified in the University Academic Regulations: Section I. You cannot appeal simply because you disagree with the mark given. The specified grounds for appeal are:

1. that an Assessment Board has given insufficient weight to extenuating circumstances; 2. that the student’s academic performance has been adversely affected by extenuating

circumstances which the student has, for good reason, been unable to make known to the Assessment Board;

3. that there has been a material administrative error at a stage of the examining process, or that some material irregularities have occurred;

4. that the assessment procedure and/or examinations have not been conducted in accordance with the approved regulations.

If you want to appeal, then you must do so within 14 days of your results being published. The onus is on you to find out your results and submit your appeal on time. 6.1 Course requirements

Stage 1 / Year 1

Course specific requirements are that all students MUST have completed 5 compulsory modules

and one elective module in year 1. The compulsory modules are:

Plus 1 Option module

The sixth module is an option module for which you can either select a module from the Electives

Catalogue (please refer to the University Home Page for the current list of Elective modules –

http:///www.uclan.ac.uk) or you could take another recommended module HS1003 – Introduction to

Research and Information in Public Health and Health Care, which will help by introducing you to

research and will assist you at Stage 2 of this programme as you start to get to grips with research

and how information is discovered..

You must complete a total of 6 modules to be considered ‘Stage 1 Complete’ which will allow you

access onto Stage 2. (NB However if you are part-time you are allowed to study across years if you

feel able to, and your timetable permits). When choosing an elective module please be careful to

note that the module is a complete module worth 20 credits. Some modules are only worth 10

credits which will only be counted as a half module and will not give you sufficient credits in order to

Progress.

Stage 2 / Year 2

At Stage 2 / Year 2 all modules are compulsory, meaning that you must complete them all; there

are no option/elective modules. The compulsory modules are:

For the award of the BA (Hons) in Counselling & Psychotherapy Studies students are required to

complete 18 modules (360 credits) with a minimum of 6 modules at Level 4, 6 modules at Level 5

and 5 modules at Level 6 in accordance with the Academic Regulations of the University..

Should students be unsuccessful (according to the Academic Regulations) in achieving this award

then the number and level of completed modules will determine the next available award. (i.e. if a

students has completed 12-17 modules, with 6 at level 4 and 5 at level 5 the award would be Diploma

in HE; if a student has completed 6-11 modules, with 6 at Level 4 and no more than 5 at Level 5,

the award would be Certificate in HE). However if the student is unsuccessful in completing the

compulsory modules of NU2335 (The Research Process) or NU3593 (Dissertation) AND a total of

16-17 modules have been completed, the award would be BA pass degree.

REGULATIONS GOVERNING PROGRESSION AND AWARDS

Progression from Stage 1 to Stage 2.

Full-time students may progress to Stage 2 of the BA (Hons) Counselling & Psychotherapy Studies

if they have passed 6 level 1 modules, including CG1000; CG1002; CG1003, CG1010, CG1030 and

one elective module. Students may at the discretion of the Assessment Board, be offered

reassessment in referred modules. Reassessment may take place on one occasion only and the

maximum grade allowed after reassessment is 40%.

Part-time students may proceed to take Stage 2 modules without being Stage 1 complete provided

they have the necessary pre-requisites for the modules they propose to take.

Progression within Stage 2.

Full-time students may proceed from Year 2 to take an Honours degree in Year 3 if they have passed

six modules in Year 2, including all core modules for their target award (CG2001, CG2010, CG2011,

CG2012, CG2081 and NU2335). Students may, at the discretion of the Assessment Board, be

offered reassessment in any referred modules.

Reassessment may be taken on one occasion only and the maximum grade allowed following

reassessment is 40%. Students who fail core modules will be advised on alternative target awards.

Students may proceed to take an ordinary degree (i.e. a non-honours degree) in Year 3 if they have

passed five modules at Level 2 yet have failed NU2335, and will not be eligible to take the

Dissertation module. Students who have passed 4 modules level 2 modules may be allowed to

proceed to take an ordinary unnamed degree by taking an additional sixth module in year 3, for

which a grade of 40% only can be obtained.

Part-time students may progress at the end of each year of study provided they have passed all

core modules and, where they have failed non-core modules, they can still complete their target

award within the maximum number of modules permissible. Where students have failed core

modules they will be advised on alternative target awards.

6.2 Classification of Awards

The University publishes the principles underpinning the way in which awards and results are decided in Academic Regulations. Decisions about the overall classification of awards are made by Assessment Boards through the application of the academic and relevant course regulations. If your classification is borderline (i. e.g. where you have an Average Percentage Mark of 48-49.5; 58-59.5; 68-69.5) the Assessment Board will look at the profile of your grades at levels 5 and 6 or just level 6 and, if more than half of the modules are in the higher award category the Assessment Board has the power to consider awarding the higher classification. For this to happen the Assessment Board will place emphasis on the compulsory modules as well as the dissertation module (NU3593). Back to Contents page

7. Student voice

You can play an important part in the process of improving the quality of this course through the feedback you give. In addition to the on-going discussion with the course team throughout the year, there are a range of mechanisms for you to feedback about your experience of teaching and learning. We aim to respond to your feedback and let you know of our plans for improvement.

You will notice a number of signs on the noticeboard outside Ha253 that detail changes to the course that have been brought about due to student feedback. For example students wanted a counselling skills module in year 3 and the Course Team validated CG3001 – Enhanced Counselling Skills and Personal Development; students wanted a residential component to the degree and one has been incorporated into Module CG1003; students reported that the seating in Ha313 was not conducive to their skills work and new, more comfortable seating has been organised.

The Students Union can support you in voicing your opinion, provide on-going advice and support, and encourage your involvement in all feedback opportunities. They will be requesting that you complete the National Student Survey (during semester 2 for students in their final year of study) or the UCLan Student Survey (all other students). The Students’ Union and University work closely together to ensure that the student voice is heard in all matters of student-life. We encourage students to provide constructive feedback throughout their time at university, through course reps, surveys and any other appropriate means, The Union’s Student Affairs Committee (SAC), members of Students’ Council and School Presidents each have particular representative responsibilities, and are involved with decision making committees as high as the University Board. Therefore it is very important students engage with the democratic processes of the Students’ Union and elect the students they see as most able to represent them. Students are also encouraged to speak directly to Module Leaders regarding any Module Feedback although students are encouraged to utilise the Student Staff Liaison Committee (via their Group

Representatives) and the Module Evaluation Questionnaires. The Course Team also meet regularly in the Course Management Committees

7.1 Course Representatives and School Presidents

A course representative is a student who represents their fellow students’ views and opinions to the course team, school, university and students’ union. Course representatives work proactively and diplomatically to improve the academic and non-academic experiences of students. The role of a course representative is extremely beneficial to both students on your course and the university. It enables students to have ownership of their student experience and voice their opinions and share positive practice with the course team, primarily the Student Staff Liaison Committee Meetings (see below). Course representatives will be elected every year either in April or September. Alongside receiving recognition, support and respect being a course representative is a great opportunity to enhance your employability skills. If you are interested in becoming a course representative and wish to find out more about the role visit the Students’ Union website or by emailing: [email protected].

School Presidents meanwhile are annually elected representatives who voice the opinions of

students within each school. They communicate and engage with students in their school to gain

feedback and work in partnership with senior management to create positive change. They are

7.2 Student Staff Liaison Committee Meetings (SSLC) The purpose of a SSLC meeting is to provide the opportunity for course representatives to feedback to staff about the course, the overall student experience and to inform developments which will improve future courses. These meetings are normally scheduled once per semester. Your Course Leader will facilitate the meetings using guidelines and provide a record of the meeting with any decisions and / or responses made and / or actions taken as a result of the discussions held. The meetings include discussion of items forwarded by course representatives, normally related to the following agenda items (dependent on time of year). The course team encourage student feedback in all areas and recognise that additional items for discussion may also be raised at the meeting • Update on actions completed since the last meeting • Feedback about the previous year – discussion of external examiner’s report; outcomes of National /UCLan student surveys. • Review of enrolment / induction experience; • Course organisation and management (from each individual year group, and the course overall); • Experience of modules - teaching, assessment, feedback; • Experience of academic support which may include e.g. Personal Development Planning, academic advisor arrangements and The Card; • Other aspects of University life relevant to student experience e.g. learning resources, IT, library;
