MISSION STATEMENT Syracuse Academy of Science Charter School will provide support, challenges and opportunities for its students, and it will instill the necessary skills and knowledge in math, science, and technology to empower students, through high intellectual standards, preparing them for college, career, and citizenship. The school seeks to graduate students who can think critically and creatively, who are committed to a lifetime of learning and civic involvement, and who are conscious of local, global, and environmental issues. 1. Student Rights & Responsibilities Student Rights

● To feel safe in the school environment; ● To take full advantage of the learning opportunities; ● To work in an environment free from disruptions and chaos: ● To express their opinions, ideas, thoughts, and concerns: ● To have a healthy environment that is smoke, alcohol, and drug free; ● To use school resources and facilities for self- betterment under appropriate supervision; ● To expect courtesy, fairness, and respect from all members of the community; ● To be informed of all expectations and responsibilities; ● To take part in a variety of school activities; and ● To have the right to due process

Student Responsibilities:

Uniform and Personal Appearance Policy The Syracuse Academy uniform policy aids in creating and maintaining a safe and orderly environment; instills discipline; and eliminates the competition and distractions caused by varied dress styles. The following is the uniform code for school and it must be followed strictly. During the 2014-2015 school year, Syracuse Academy will allow students to continue to wear navy blue bottoms throughout the year, with the understanding that in 2015-2016 khaki bottoms are required. Students must arrive to school in uniform. If a student arrives to school out of uniform, they must be in uniform before attending their first class. Discipline will be considered for students who repeatedly arrive to school out of uniform. Be Advised: If a student arrives at school out of uniform, the uniform must be put on upon entering the school. If not, a parent/guardian will be called; the student will be kept out of class until he/she is dressed appropriately - all class time that a student misses will count as an unexcused absence. ****ADMINISTRATION RESERVES THE RIGHT TO DETERMINE SUITABILITY OF UNIFORM APPROPRIATENESS AND COMPLIANCE****

Absolutely none of the following are permitted: ● Baggy or sagging slacks: Sagging bottoms are not permitted and displaying of undergarments is

a violation of dress code. A belt should be worn by those students whose bottoms do not rest appropriately at their waist.

● Skinny pants/jeans, skintight, body-hugging materials ● Clothing made from a lycra or stretch material ● Jeans/denim fabric including dark wash ● Defacing of the Syracuse Academy uniform polo shirt by writing, cutting, tearing etc.; those

students whose uniforms have been defaced will be required to purchase a new one prior to returning to classes

● Rolling up the hem or sleeves of the Syracuse Academy uniform polo shirt ● Gym shorts or athletic wear including sweatpants and yoga pants ● Slippers, sandals, flip flops, high heel shoes

Uniform for Ladies k-12 Tops:

● Syracuse Academy uniform light blue logo polo shirt ● Any acceptable long sleeve tee shirt may be worn under the Syracuse Academy uniform light

blue polo shirt. ● Approved Syracuse Academy hooded, zip-up, sweatshirts

Bottoms: ● Khaki or navy blue slacks must fit appropriately ● Khaki or navy blue skirts are acceptable when worn knee-length or longer, with either: opaque

navy blue leggings that are ankle length OR opaque/solid, navy blue tights (no patterns) � Bare legs and stockings where the skin beneath is visible are not acceptable � Waist and/or hem should never be rolled to shorten length of skirt � Length of skirt is to be the same all the way around.

● Khaki or navy blue Skorts: knee-length or longer ● Khaki or navy blue Shorts: knee-length or longer ● Khaki or navy blue Capri pants: hem should hit below the knee

Uniform for Gentlemen k-12 Tops:

unacceptable Khaki bottoms are available at numerous local stores: Target, Old Navy, and Wal-Mart among others. SASCS LOGO LIGHT BLUE POLO SHIRTS and SASCS HOODED SWEATSHIRTS will be available for a reasonable price from Syracuse Academy.

Additional Dress Code Requirements and Limitations In addition to making sure you are wearing the school uniform, Syracuse Academy requires that you follow these additional guidelines in terms of uniform appearance and personal appearance.

ACCESSORIES, COSMETICS, PIERCINGS AND FACIAL HAIR K-12

● Jewelry should be appropriate for school and not attract undue attention. SASCS reserves the right to decide on the appropriateness of jewelry � Earrings: Ladies may wear ONE pair of earrings to school that do not attract undue attention;

Gentlemen may not wear earrings. � One ring may be worn. � Only SASCS rubber bracelet permitted.

● Head bands should only be worn to hold back the hair. Headbands with objects, lights, animals or other ornamentation are not allowed.

● Neckwear and ties are not to be worn by ladies or gentlemen. ● Cosmetics should be appropriate for school and not attract undue attention. ● Facial and body piercing, tattoos, use of hair dyes and bleach are discouraged. ● No moustaches or beards.

The following items are not to be worn or brought into classrooms and should be removed and stored in lockers prior to students’ first class:

● Jackets ● Hats, caps, berets, scarves, bandanas and other headgear ● Winter hats, mittens and gloves

Dress Down Days ● Shirts must include sleeves and be full length ● Shorts and skirts must be knee length ● Undergarments must not be exposed ● No low cut shirts or tank tops are allowed ● Jeans may not be ripped or have holes

If a student is deemed to be dressed inappropriately on dress down days, he/she will be asked to correct their clothing choice to reflect the dress code; should the student refrain from changing his/her clothes, a parent/guardian will be called and the student will be sent home. *Not sure if your student’s clothing is in accordance with the dress code? The Deans of Students are available to answer your questions. If you are the slightest bit unsure, please contact them.

2. Grading Scale and Course Requirements All classes at SASCS will follow this standard scale for assigning letter grades for quarter and semester work. Individual teachers will establish the grading policies and procedures for their classes, and their grades will correspond to this scale.

Grades 5-6 Program Requirements During grades five and six, all students receive instruction in the seven general curriculum areas:

• Mathematics • English language arts • Social studies • Languages other than English • The arts • Career development and occupational studies • Health education and physical education

Grades 7-8 Program Requirements During grades seven and eight, all students receive instruction in the following general curriculum areas:

• English language arts, two units of study • Social studies, two units of study • Science, two units of study • Mathematics, two units of study • Technology education, one unit of study • Home and career skills, three quarters of a unit of study

The requirements for technology education, home and career skills, and library and information skills may be met by the integration of the State learning standards of such subjects into other courses. SASCS DIPLOMA REQUIREMENTS Syracuse Academy of Science Charter School grants two types of diplomas which conform to New York State regulations citing the specific number of credits and state examinations which must be successfully completed. The following chart describes the number of course credits as well as required examinations necessary for a high school diploma.

3. Homework Policy Homework is an essential part of your successful educational program at SASCS. Doing homework will help you develop many valuable skills such as good study habits, time management, responsibility, and perseverance. Teachers will assign homework that will foster individual learning and growth and that is appropriate for the subject area. Homework is part of all students' regular evaluations. It is your responsibility to complete and turn in homework on time. If you or your parents have questions about homework, immediately contact the teacher who assigned it. Failure to do assigned homework at SASCS is unacceptable and may result in disciplinary action such as restricted lunch, AES, exclusion from extracurricular activities per teacher’s or administrators’ discretion. 4. Grading Policy The 4th – 12th grade promotion from one grade to another in SASCS shall be based on the following criteria:

• Syracuse Academy of Science will have four marking periods for all grade levels. • The teachers whose students are taking State Assessments or Regents exams at the end of the year

may opt to accept the State exams as their final exam grade. • In special category subjects it is recommended that teachers give a project in lieu of a final exam. • 65 % is the passing score at SASCS. At the end of the year, the average of the four marking

period percentages will be calculated and will represent the student's final grade. • In 4th - 8th grade, student will be allowed to fail one core subject (2nd language is considered a

core subject) and one special. Any student failing two or more core subjects will need to attend summer school in the home district and pass the subject to be promoted to the next grade level.

• Students in grade 9, 10, 11, and 12 must complete the SASCS core curriculum, and pass courses and exams required by the NYS education department to receive Carnegie units toward graduation.

• If a student earns a passing score on the State test or Regents exam, they will pass the course with a D-, automatically.

• At high school level, students will need to pass all required subjects. If they fail a course and take it in summer school and don't pass it, they will need to repeat the course.

5. Attendance, Illness, Injury, and Medication Policies EXCUSED ABSENCES, TARDINESS, OR EARLY DISMISSAL Students will be excused for personal illness, illness or death in the immediate family, approved family emergency, religious observance, required court appearance, medical appointments and approved college visits. Students will be expected to provide documentation of these absences upon their return to school. In addition, students will be excused for school activities approved by Administration. Parents/guardians must notify the school between the hours of 8:00 AM and 10:00 AM on any day their child will be absent. If a parent does not call the school, the parent will receive a call from the school. Students are required to bring a note to the Main Office when they return to school. All parent notes should include the following:

● The date of the absence(s). ● The reason for the absence(s). ● A phone number where a parent/guardian can be reached. ● The parent/guardian’s signature.

A parent note without documentation may only excuse only three (3) total absences in a school year. Further documentation will be asked for after three (3) absences.

EARLY DISMISSAL PROCEDURE Notes are to be brought in to the Main Office prior to dismissal. The note must contain the following:

● A legitimate reason for dismissal ● A parent's (guardian's) signature ● Telephone number where the parent/guardian may be contacted for verification during the day

(home and work telephone number). ● No student will be dismissed unless a parent/guardian is contacted. ● No student will be dismissed unless a parent/guardian comes to SASCS at the time of dismissal. ● All students must sign out with the secretary before leaving the building, even if the nurse has

granted the dismissal. ● Students granted early dismissals must leave the SASCS complex promptly via the front door.

The Main Office will keep record of all early dismissals. UNEXCUSED ABSENCES, TARDINESS OR EARLY DISMISSAL Unexcused absences include oversleeping, missing the bus, leaving school for work or any other reason not included on the list above. Syracuse Academy of Science expects all students to be in school to receive the benefit of the Syracuse Academy of Science education. If a student is absent from a particular class, the student will be subject to the following policy:

● At six (6) absences, a student conference will be held with the teacher. ● At eleven (11) absences, a parent/guardian contact will be made by the teacher. ● At sixteen (16) absences, a second parent/guardian contact will be made by the teacher. ● At twenty-one (21) absences in a year, the student will fail the subject for the year.

Please note:

● If a class is not year-long, the absences may not exceed a prorated limit. For example, if it is a half-year course, a student cannot exceed ten (10) absences for the class.

● Teachers will notify parents/guardians and the students as absences accumulate. Students who are absent are responsible for the work they have missed. Students are given two day extension for every day of excused absences to make up work missed.

TARDINESS Students shall be on time and in their seats as the classes start. The Building Administrator or designee will monitor tardiness, notify students, parents, and staff and when necessary assign the following consequences:

● Five (5) tardies and any thereafter will result in one (1) day AES. ● Ten (10) tardies will result in 2 day AES, and loss of privileges such as extracurricular activities

and field trips until all corrective actions are cleared from the student’s record. ● Fifteen (15) tardies will result in further disciplinary action at the discretion of the administration.

NO SCHOOL, SCHOOL DELAY ANNOUNCEMENTS Syracuse Academy of Science will post all “no school” or emergency school closings/delay announcements using the following channels: CNYCentral, NewsChannel9, Clear Channel Radio Stations: 570WSYR, 620AM, FM Bands: 104, 105, 106, 107 and y94, 89. 9FM; 93Q Radio; Syracuse.com, Syracuse Academy of Science Websites and social media channels. ILLNESS OR INJURY DURING THE SCHOOL DAY SASCS will have a school nurse or first-aid-trained-professional available to discuss or assist with medical problems or concerns. Unless you are ill, you must make an appointment in advance with the nurse.

Please follow these three rules if you become ill or are injured during the school day. ● Report to the nurse’s office/clinic. If the nurse is not available, you should report to the Main

Office. ● If you do not inform the office and simply miss class, it is an unexcused absence. ● Do not just leave the building. Always report to the main office.

Medication Policy Medication should not be brought to school unless it is essential to the health of the student. If a student must take medicine at school, these procedures must be followed:

● The medication to be administered by designated school personnel must be � sent directly from the pharmacy or physician's office � or brought to school by the student's parent/guardian.

● The school must receive a Medication Administration Directions Form signed by the student's physician and parent/guardian. ● On the medication container must be clearly printed the following information:

� Student's Name � Name of the medication � Dosage � Time the medication must be taken.

● Bring in only the amount of medication that is needed for a school day. ● In the case of prolonged need, send in the amount for a clearly specified period such as one week

or one month. Extra medication will not be sent home with a student. ● All medication will be kept in a secure location in the nurse’s office. ● Students are not allowed to carry any medication with them to school. Aspirin or Tylenol is not

available from school. ● Students may carry and administer their medication if these two conditions are met:

� It is warranted by a potentially life-threatening condition and advised by their physician and;

� A Medication Self-Administration Form is on file in the office signed by the student's parent, physician, and the Director.

6. Metal Detector Policy; Cell Phone/ Electronic Device Policies/Electronics Lockers When students enter the building they must store all cell phones and electronic devices in the electronic lockers that are provided for them in the designated areas. Students will then proceed to the metal detectors. The student or visitor will be asked to remove any metal items from their person, just as one would do in an airport or government building. The person will then walk through the detector. In the event the detector sounds an alert as a person passes through it, staff will ask the individual to identify and remove the item believed that caused the alert. If the person does not know what caused the alert, staff will use a handheld wand detector to help identify the item. Staff will inspect student backpacks, bags, coats, or similar items. Once students clear the metal detector, they will proceed to their first period class, unless they are arriving late for school, in which case they must first obtain a late pass from the main office. The School prohibits students from using or possessing electronic devices during the school day including cellular phones, MP3 players, iPods, iPads, Blackberry devices, electronic game systems, cameras, earphones or any other electronic device. Any items brought into the school are the student’s responsibility. SASCS is not responsible for the loss or theft of cell phones or electronic devices that student’s bring into the building. Students arriving at school with such devices will be required to store

the electronics in the electronics lockers. Any student violating this policy, or attempting to violate it by entering the building with a cell phone or electronic device, will be subject to student discipline. The first offense will result in the electronic device(s) being confiscated for 14 days. The parent/guardian will need to retrieve it from the school after 14 days unless special permission is obtained from Administration. A second offense would result in the confiscation of the electronic device(s) for an additional 14 days. LOCKERS FOR ELECTRONIC DEVICES Electronics lockers should only be used to store electronic items you bring from home. SASCS will not be liable for loss/theft of personal items. To keep your school items safe, we strongly advise you to keep your electronics locker and its combination private. Do not trade electronics lockers with another student. Do not let another student share your electronics locker. It is your responsibility to see that your electronics locker is kept locked and in order at all times. You should report any damage, vandalism or non/working condition of your electronics locker to the office. If you do not report vandalism, damage or non-working condition of your electronics locker, you will be held responsible for it. Please remember that your electronics locker is school property and the school reserves the right to access any electronics locker at any time, however, you have full responsibility for the security of your electronics locker and what is in it. Periodic electronics locker checks will be made by SASCS staff to ensure that electronic lockers are kept clean and orderly. These policies and procedures will be effective in helping us to maintain a safe and effective educational environment for your children. We ask for, and expect, your support in their regard; after all, you have enrolled your children at the Syracuse Academy of Science Charter School because you want to maximize their potential to succeed academically in a safe environment. 7. School Lunch Policy All students will remain at school during the lunch period and are not able to leave/exit the building to eat lunch off campus or leave to purchase food or drink. You may buy your lunch at school, or you may bring lunch from home. No student may bring food into the cafeteria from home for distribution among other students. Lunch is to be consumed in the cafeteria. You will be expected to pick up after yourself and dispose of all recyclables, organic compostables, and trash appropriately. During the lunch period, you will be expected to display good manners and courtesy. You are responsible for your behavior. On special occasions, teachers may make arrangements with Administration to consume food in alternate locations. This will be arranged and approved by Administration on a case by case basis. 8. Lockers Each student will be assigned a locker for his/her individual use at SASCS. This locker is for storing books, coats, and personal items necessary for school. The lockers should not be used to store valuable items you bring from home. SASCS will not be liable for loss of personal items. 9. Public Areas Classrooms, hallways, stairwells, and lavatories are areas used by all members of SASCS. Because everyone uses these areas, there are rules of conduct that all students must follow.

● Eating & drinking is permitted only during first ten minutes of the first period and at teacher’s discretion.

● Teachers may determine what items are appropriate for consumption in their classrooms, if allowed, during 1st period.

● Students cannot bring food items into the classroom if such food items may cause an allergic reaction to a person.

● You may not loiter in the halls, lunchroom or lavatories or on staircases. ● You may not eat in halls, lavatories, or on staircases, food is to be consumed in the cafeteria. ● You may not run in the halls, lunchroom, lavatories, or on the staircases. ● You may not use any profane or vulgar language at any time. ● You may not yell, scream, hit lockers or otherwise make excessive noise while in these areas. ● You must do your part to keep these areas clean and safe. Do not write on walls or lockers. ● Do not leave belongings on the floor or on top of your locker. If you do, SAS is not responsible. ● Make sure you clean up after yourself and appropriately dispose of all trash. ● Report any leaks, spills, or other problems in the lavatory to a teacher or the office. ● Do not roughhouse, push, wrestle or horseplay. ● During class time, students are not to be in the halls, stairwells, or lavatories without a pass from

their teacher or the main office and must follow the 15 minute rule. ● You may not leave the classroom to use the lavatories for more than 5 minutes without written

note from your teacher. PHONE CALLS SASCS restricts the use of phones during school hours. Students are not permitted, and teachers will not allow students, to make phone calls during class time from anywhere. Students are not permitted to come to the Main Office to use the phone unless there is an emergency. If a student comes to the Main Office to use the phone for any reason other than an emergency, he or she will be told to return to class. Parents calling the school during normal school hours to speak with their child are restricted unless there is an emergency. Messages will be taken and delivered to students by last period. Messages taken after school hours will be given to the student whenever possible by paging the student to the Main Office to pick it up. HALL PASSES

• Students may not leave the classroom without a teacher’s or staff person’s permission. ● Students who are not in their assigned rooms must have in their possession the hall pass. ● Only one student may exit the classroom at a time. ● If the hall pass is not available, then students must wait for the hall pass to return before leaving. ● No passes will be issued during the first and the last ten minutes of any period unless there is an

extreme emergency. ● Failure to follow these rules may result in disciplinary action.

10. School Activities SASCS will offer a range of activities that will enrich student learning during the school day and after school. Because the safety of students is very important to us, specific rules will apply to these activities. FIELD TRIPS Field Trips offer exciting ways to learn. SASCS students will have the opportunity to go on field trips at various times throughout the school year. For all field trips, you will be expected to follow these rules:

● You must bring to school the Field Trip Permission slip signed by your parents or guardian by the specified date. No phone calls will be accepted as permission.

● You must wear your school uniform unless otherwise specified. ● You must abide by SASCS codes of student conduct while on the field trip. ● Students must have no more than 15 behavioral demerits within the previous four weeks

from the date of the field trip, and no more than fifty behavioral demerits for the year. AFTER-SCHOOL ACTIVITIES There is no better way for students to enrich their education than by taking parts in clubs and after-school activities or working with a teacher. These opportunities will allow you to explore more deeply things you already enjoy and to try other areas that sound interesting. If you stay for an after-school activity, you will be expected to follow these rules:

● Students may not leave the building at dismissal and then return for a club or afterschool activity unless they are asked to do so. You are not permitted to go to the store or bakery. You must stay in the building and go to the classroom or location of the activity at dismissal. If you leave school at dismissal time, you will not be accepted into the building, and you will be sent home.

● You must be with a teacher or other staff member at all times while you are staying after. ● You must arrange for your own transportation to arrive promptly at the end of the activity. All

students must be picked up by 4:45 p.m. and 5p.m. If you are not picked up on time or leave the school grounds when asked, after school privileges may be suspended.

● You must abide by the SASCS code of student conduct while participating in the activity. ● You may not stay after school to wait for another student. ● You must have pre-arranged permission by a school administrator or teacher to stay after school. ● You must stay at the assigned area if you stay after school

A full list and description of after school clubs and activities will be posted after school starts and students will have an opportunity to explore each one that looks interesting.

11. Student ID Cards Student ID Cards will be issued to each student enrolled at SASCS. It is mandatory that all SASCS students have in their possession Syracuse Academy of Science ID cards, and display the ID cards while on the school grounds. This card allows students to attend school-sponsored functions. Suspension from school automatically invalidates the card for the length of the suspension. If you lose your ID card, go to the main office before or after school to purchase a new one with a cost of $5. Students shall return their Student ID cards in case they withdraw from the school. 12. Textbook and Supplies SASCS will provide students with the textbooks for each of their classes. SASCS will hold each student responsible for the condition of the textbook issued to him or her. Each student should take care to see that these books are not lost, stolen, damaged, or defaced. Parents will be responsible to pay for or replace any books that are damaged or not returned. When textbooks are distributed, make sure you use it properly and neatly. Teachers will write down the number of the textbook you have and the condition of

the book. When you return the book, its condition will be checked. If you lose the book or damage it by writing in or ripping it so that another student cannot use it, you will have to pay to replace the book. Many of the classes will use consumable supplies - from materials to workbooks. Students will be required to pay for these consumable materials. If there is a special circumstance, families should meet with the administration. 13. Visitors Visitors for educational reasons are welcome at SASCS. Visitors must report and sign into the visitor log and receive visitor badge. They must wear this badge while in the building. Except for extracurricular school events, and with permission of a school administrator, students are not permitted to have non-enrolled students on the school property or in the school building at any time. Parents, please call to arrange an appointment to meet with your student's teachers and sign into the building in the reception area. Former students/Alumni should call ahead to arrange for a visit that is convenient for the current instructional schedule and should be limited in length. 14. Student Conduct and Discipline Everything in and around the school has been designed to create an orderly and distraction free environment in which students can learn effectively in the optimal educational environment. Staff members and Administration review the school rules and regulations with the students and it is expected that each student will be respectful towards adults, respectful towards each other, and respectful towards the learning environment that is created at the Syracuse Academy of Science. Students must learn to assume and accept responsibility for their own behavior as well as the consequences for their misbehavior. The school will be using the merit/demerit system for all 5-12th graders. Students will receive a disciplinary consequence when they reach certain benchmarks. All school rules apply in the school buses. The merit/demerit system can be accessed 24 hours a day online through our website. In addition, staff members will have the opportunity to use the following guidelines when handling discipline cases. Administrative discretion can be used in any incident to change the action/penalty depending on the circumstances surrounding the event. Syracuse Academy of Science Recognition and Reward Point System (RPS) The school staff rewards the students who demonstrate proper behavior and academically perform well. Reward Points are divided into daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly award systems. Reward Points will be given to students based on school staff evaluation. During weekly administration meetings, administrators will review the reward points given to ensure students are not taking advantage of the system. The awards and reward points are as follows:

The students that show extraordinary effort in promoting a positive school culture through respect, professionalism, academics, and leadership will be awarded each month. The winners of these awards will be announced in the morning announcements, school newsletter, and on the school website. The winners of these awards will also be put into the running for the class superlative of the same name at the End of the Year Ceremony and then into the SASCS Hall of Fame. Each grade will have its own set of awards. These awards will not be given if a student does not meet all criteria for the award. Each quarter, a pizza party will be held for the students that receive a Student of the Month Award.

Occasionally, students will forget their homework or make a mistake that will leave them in the Alternative Education Setting (AES) Room. In order to award students who have been behaving excellently while in Detention or AES, the following awards have been created to give students a chance to make up for their past mistakes.

** As the year progresses teachers and administrators will closely examine the actions of the student who constantly receive discipline points (regardless of the total reward point a student might have). The have the right to decide on rolling over the discipline points only to the next academic year. PENALTY PROCEDURES/ EXPLANATION OF DISCIPLINARY MEASURES A student who is determined to have broken the SASCS disciplinary code shall be subject to a penalty, unless the Director determines that an exception should be made based on the individual circumstances of the incident and the student's disciplinary record. Such student also may be subject to any of the disciplinary measures set forth hereby, and, depending on the severity of the infraction, a heavier penalty also may be imposed and referrals to law enforcement authorities may be made. In the event of a suspension or expulsion the student and parent/guardian will be informed in writing. In long term suspension and expulsion cases, the Director shall personally determine the proceedings or he may designate a hearing officer to conduct the hearing. At this hearing, anecdotal records, including behavioral records may be considered in making a decision. Results of this hearing will include one of the following:

• Return to classroom • Extension of current suspension • Placement in Alternate Education Program (4:00 – 6:00 p.m.) • Student asked to return to his or her home school

A suspension from school for a period in excess of five days will be considered should the disciplinary charges be sustained. Federal and State law require the expulsion from school for a period of not less than one year for a student who is determined to have brought a firearm to a school, or to have possessed a firearm at school, except that the school's chief administering officer may modify such expulsion requirement for a student on a case-by- basis if such modification is in writing. The disciplinary measures listed below may be imposed in addition to short-term or long-term suspensions or, if an exception has been made by the director to the imposition of a minimum suspension, in place of such suspension. Behavior not listed in the chart above but determined by appropriate school staff to warrant disciplinary action, also may be subject to these additional disciplinary measures. AES (Alternative Educational Setting): AES will be utilized for students that require disciplinary consequences for behavior in a restricted educational setting. Behavioral Contract/Academic Contract: School staff may design written agreements with students subject to punishment under this code to identify target behaviors, define expectations, and describe consequences, provided that the affected student and his or her parent(s) or guardian(s) are informed that the decision to enter into such a contract is voluntary. Expulsion: Shall refer to the permanent removal of a student from school for disciplinary reasons due to behavior.

Restricted Lunch: Lunch Detention will be utilized for students that have disciplinary consequences for behavior that requires them to eat their lunch in a more restricted setting than the lunch room with their peers. Loss of School Privileges: A student may be suspended from participation in any or all extracurricular activities based on behavior. Long Term Suspension: Refers to the removal of a student from school for disciplinary reasons for a period of more than five days. Short term Suspension: Refers to the removal of a student from school for a period of five or fewer days for a disciplinary reason. Suspension from School Transportation: As the result of misconduct occurring on a bus or other student transportation, and after notice to the student and his or her parent(s) or guardian(s), a student may be suspended from school transportation. *Anything not covered by above as aforementioned categories would fall under Administrative discretion and will be penalized as such. PROVISION OF SERVICES DURING REMOVAL Syracuse Academy of Science staff ensures, for those students removed for a period of less than 10 days, that the affected student receives classroom assignments. During such suspension, the student is prohibited from being in the school property during the normal school day, but will be tutored after school at 4:00 P.M. 15. Maintenance of Public Order in School The following rules shall govern the conduct of students, parents, teachers, staff, licensees, invitees, and other persons, whether or not their presence is authorized, on all property or facilities operated under the auspices of the charter school. These rules and penalties are not to be considered exclusive or to preclude in any way the prosecution and conviction of any person for the violation of any federal, State or local law, rule, regulation or ordinance, or the imposition of a fine or penalty provided for therein. Additionally, these rules and regulations should not be construed to limit, but rather exist in conjunction with any other codes of conduct established for the school. PROHIBITED CONDUCT No person, either singly or in concert, shall:

• Willfully cause physical injury to any other person, or threaten to use force which would result in such injury

• Physically restrain, or detain any other person, nor remove such person from any place where he or she is authorized to remain, except as necessary to maintain the established educational process

• Willfully damage or destroy school property, nor remove or use such property without authorization

• Without permission, express or implied, enter into any private office or classroom of an administrative officer, teacher, or staff member

• Enter or remain in any building or facility for any purpose other than its authorized use or in such a manner as to obstruct its authorized use by others

• Without authorization, remain in any building or facility after it is normally closed, nor without permission enter any building or facility prior to its normal opening

• Refuse to leave any building or facility after being required to do so by the director or an authorized administrative officer or his or her designee

• Willfully obstruct or interfere with the free movement of persons and vehicles

• Deliberately disrupt or prevent the peaceful and orderly conduct of classes, lectures, and meetings or deliberately interfere with the freedom of any person to express his or her views, unless such disruption is necessary to maintain order of the educational process

• Possess on school property any rifle, shotgun, pistol, revolver, knife, chain, club or other weapon, whether or not the person has a license to possess such weapon. Further, it is the duty of the director to inform the police of the presence or use of any such weapon or implements used as weapons on school property

• Commit acts which threaten the safety and welfare of persons on school property • Violate any federal or State statute or regulation, local ordinance or school policy • Possess, use or distribute alcohol, drugs or drug paraphernalia • Harass or coerce or intimidate any person • Refuse or fail to comply with a lawful order or direction of a school official in the performance of

his or her duty • Distribute or post on school property any written material, pamphlets or posters without the prior

approval of the director • Show public displays of affection in any manner vulgar or otherwise. • Using racial or ethnic slurs, profanity, or obscene language in a persistent and/or abusive manner • Refusing to identify self on the reasonable request of staff or giving false identification • Engaging in sexual contact of any kind with or without mutual consent • Spreading rumors (false or uncertain claims, accusation, and etc.) around

PENALTIES & ENFORCEMENT Penalties for violations of these rules include, but are not limited to:

• the withdrawal of permission to access school property and grounds; • expulsion; • arrest; • Suspension or other disciplinary action.

Staff members are required to report known violations of these rules to the director and to make reasonable efforts to stop the prohibited conduct. The director is responsible for the enforcement of these rules. 16. Student Rights and Responsibilities PARTICIPATION IN SCHOOL ACTIVITIES All students have the following rights:

• To have the opportunity to take part in all school activities on an equal basis regardless of race, sex, national origin, creed, or disability.

• To address the school on the same terms as any citizen. Similarly, all students are bound by the same rules for exclusion from school activities and public address.

RECORDS The school will not disclose any information from the student's permanent records except as authorized pursuant to The Family Education Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA), or in response to a subpoena, as required by law. The parent(s) or guardian(s) of a student under 18 years of age, or a student 18 years of age or older, is entitled to access to the student's school records by submitting a written request to the Director.

FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION • Students are entitled to express their personal opinions verbally, in writing, or by symbolic

speech. The expression of such opinions, however, shall not interfere with the freedom of others to express themselves, and written expression of opinion must be signed by the author. Any form of expression that involves libel, slander, the use of obscenity, or personal attacks, or that otherwise disrupts the educational process, is prohibited. All forms of expression also must be in compliance with the Student Disciplinary Code and the school dress code, violations of which are punishable as stated in the Disciplinary Code.

• Student participation in the publication of school sponsored student newsletters, yearbooks, literary magazines and similar publications is encouraged as a learning and educational experience. These publications, if any, shall be supervised by qualified faculty advisors and shall strive to meet high standards of journalism. In order to maintain consistency with the school's basic educational mission, the content of such publications is controlled by school authorities.

• No person shall distribute any printed or written materials on school property without the prior permission of the director. The director may regulate the content of materials to be distributed on school property to the extent necessary to avoid material and substantial interference with the requirements of appropriate discipline in the operation of the school. The director may also regulate the time, place, manner and duration of such distribution.

SEARCH & SEIZURE

• A student and/or the student's belongings may be searched by a school official if the official has a reasonable suspicion to believe that a search of that student will result in evidence that the student violated the law or a school rule. Items which are prohibited on school property, or which may be used to disrupt or interfere with the educational process, may be removed from the student by school authorities.

• Student lockers and desks remain the property of the school, though the school is not responsible for books, clothing, or valuables left in lockers or desks. A student shall not place or keep in a locker or desk any article or material which is of a non-school nature and may cause or tend to cause the disruption of the mission of the school.

• The following rules shall apply to the search of school property assigned to a specific student and the seizure of illegal items found therein:

� School authorities will make an individual search of a student's locker or desk only when there is reasonable suspicion to believe that a student is in the possession of an item which is prohibited on school property or which may be used to disrupt or interfere with the educational process.

� Searches shall be conducted under the authorization of the school director or his/her designee.

� Items which are prohibited on school property, or which may be used to disrupt or interfere with the educational process, may be removed from student lockers or desks by school authorities.

OFF-CAMPUS EVENTS Students at school sponsored off-campus events shall be governed by all the guidelines of the school and are subject to the authority of school officials. Failure to obey the lawful instructions of school officials shall result in a loss of eligibility to attend school sponsored off-campus events and may result in additional disciplinary measures in accordance with the Student Disciplinary Code.

SCHOOL BUS BEHAVIOR Every SASCS student is a good-will ambassador of Syracuse Academy of Science. It is expected that appropriate behavior and conduct will reflect positively upon the reputation of the school and each student there-in. All rules of discipline at SASCS extend equally to bus behavior.

● School Bus transportation is a privilege, not a right. Therefore it is expected that SASCS students will not engage in any behavior which distracts the driver of the vehicle from operating the vehicle in a safe manner.

● Consequences for inappropriate behavior will result in disciplinary action that may include the suspension of the school bus transportation privilege for an appropriate time period and/or further disciplinary action by the school administration.

SASCS has as its goal to help every student fulfill his or her intellectual, social, physical and emotional potential. Everything in and about the school has been designed to create an orderly and distraction-free environment in which all students can learn effectively and pleasantly. To foster this kind of learning environment, the SASCS administrators and teachers shall not allow the following behaviors during school, on school property, or at or during any school-sponsored activities. POLICY FOR NETWORKS, INTERNET & CYBERBULLYING Technology is used to support teaching and learning. Networks, including the Internet, allow people to communicate with others through the use of technology, research information to support education, conduct experiments and scientific research, and produce educational materials and projects. It is the policy of SASCS that all technology used to access the network will be used in a responsible, legal and ethical manner. Remember, the use of the network is a privilege, not an entitlement, and is subject to the conditions outlined in the Student Handbook. Because network communication is often public, students and staff are responsible for behaving appropriately on the network, as they are in the school. The network is provided for students and faculty to conduct research and communicate with others concerning schoolwork. Individual users of the network are responsible for their use of the network. The use of the network must be consistent with academic actions and rules. A responsible network user will:

● Use language that is considered appropriate at all times. ● Send only information that other users will not find offensive. ● Conform to copyright laws. ● Never reveal personal information about themselves or any user such as address, telephone

number, credit card numbers, social security number, etc. ● Not tamper with the system or alter, copy, delete or destroy any files or data that are not theirs. ● Not attempt to gain access to any SASCS computer, resources or files that are beyond their

authorized access. ● Not download or install any programs on SASCS computers without written permission from the

Executive Director. ● Report immediately any suspicious activity or suspected security breaches to a teacher or

administrator. ● Never plagiarize material found on the Internet. Plagiarism is taking someone's words or ideas

and presenting them as if they were your own work. ● Not disrupt the network, spread computer viruses or practice computer “hacking” of any kind. A

responsible network user must be aware that: � Use of the network is a PRIVILEGE, not a RIGHT. � E-mail is not private. � Cyberbullying of any kind is absolutely prohibited. � Violation of this policy may result in the loss of Internet privileges or, where appropriate,

disciplinary action pursuant to the SASCS Code of Conduct.

� Persons issued an account are responsible for its use at all times, and should take reasonable precautions to safeguard access to their account, remember to logout of all accounts and systems upon finishing use.

� SASCS maintains an Internet filtering system to restrict access to certain web sites. Any attempts to bypass this filtering system and access blocked sites is a violation of the school rules that will be subject to disciplinary measures deemed appropriate by administration.

CYBERBULLYING Cyberbullying occurs when a student targets another student using interactive technologies or the internet, including but not limited to e-mails and harassing messages whether or not such documents are printed out and distributed in school or on school grounds. Cyberbullying typically creates a disruption in school, where the victim is afraid, may seek counseling or miss school, their grades may be impacted and friends may get involved. Any proof of an in-school student impact will result in disciplinary action. If cyberbullying targets staff and the student’s behavior has had a real impact on the staff (for example, if the teacher or staff member quits in reaction to the harassment or take a leave of absence or seeks medical treatment to help deal with the emotional implications of the student’s actions), the school will take disciplinary action. If there is a threat involved, the school will take disciplinary action, including possibly suspension and expulsion. If the cyberbullying has disrupted or will disrupt school discipline, the school will take disciplinary action, including possibly suspension and expulsion. If the student is bringing to school print-outs of the cyberbullying materials or site, or promoting other students in school to visit the site, or if the student accesses the web site while at school or creates or works on the Web site from school, the school will take disciplinary action, including possibly suspension and expulsion. If cyberbullying occurs on a web site that belongs to the school or is created as a school-sponsored project, the school will take disciplinary action, including possibly suspension and expulsion.

● I will show consideration for the rights and feelings of others, being careful not to hurt them physically or make them feel bad.

● I will speak to others respectfully, not using profanity or uncomplimentary names. ● I will show respect for all people working or helping in the school. ● I will show careful regard for both my property and the property of others. ● I will always ask permission before I borrow other people’s things, and I will return them

promptly and in good condition when I am finished. ● I will attend school regularly. ● I will be in class on time with all necessary materials. ● I will make good use of class time and complete and turn in assignments on time. ● I understand that I must make up assignments I missed because of an absence. ● I will remain on campus during school time, including the lunch period. I will not leave the

school grounds without the permission of the Director or his/her designee. ● I will do my best in my schoolwork, and I will let others do their best. ● I will ask for help if I do not understand ● I will not bring any prohibited or contraband items to school. ● I will help keep the school building and grounds clean and tidy. ● I will not run in the halls. ● I will follow the dress code and arrive at school in my uniform. ● I will not participate in any behavior banned by the school. ● I will agree to any consequences given to me by Administration, up to and including expulsion.

PARENTS AS PARTNERS (MANDATORY) As partners in the educational process at SASCS, we ask parents to:

• Set appropriate rules, times, and limits so that your child: � Gets to bed early on school nights; � Arrives at school on time and is picked up on time at the end of the day; � Is dressed according to the school dress code; and � Completes assignments on time.

• Actively participate in parent/school activities, such as Parent-Teacher Conferences. • Ensure that the student pays for any damage to school books or property due to carelessness or

neglect on the part of the student. • Telephone the school when the student will be absent or tardy. • Notify the school office of any changes of address or important phone numbers. • Inform the school of any special situation regarding the student’s well-being, safety, and health. • Complete and return to school any requested information promptly. • Read school notes and newsletters and to show interest in the student’s total education. • Support and cooperate with the discipline policy of the school. • Treat teachers and administrators with respect and courtesy at all times, including during

discussion about student problems • Log in to SIS to stay informed with grades, attendance, discipline and reward points.
