Student Guide – Fitness Online Toolbox

Description of Fitness Online Toolbox The Fitness Online Toolbox provides an interactive, simulated work-place in which the learner takes on the role of a fitness instructor or personal trainer. The toolbox presents the learner with a number of scenarios that simulate situations in the real work place. The toolbox covers five of the stream competencies and the Personal Trainer specialisation from the Certificate IV in Fitness qualification within the Fitness Training Package.

The aim of this toolbox is to provide the learner with the underpinning knowledge and understanding of the skills to develop full competency in a real work-place situation. The target audience for this toolbox are learners who have either completed the Certificate III in Fitness or have equivalent industry experience and are working or planning to work in a fitness organisation or as a personal trainer.

Getting into the Fitness ToolboxTo start working in the Fitness Toolbox you should follow these steps.

Step 1 – Choose a competency

To enter the Fitness Online Toolbox, select the "Choose a competency" button. You are then

presented with the five competencies addressed in this toolbox. Upon selecting a competency, you will be presented with a description of the competency and the scenarios that are designed to enable you to master each competency.

Step 2 – Select a scenario

You can read a short description of each scenario within the introduction screen for the scenario. You can either follow the scenarios in order or select a scenario that best suits your current training needs. By selecting a scenario you will enter the introductory scene where you will be given instructions on how to work within the particular scenario.

Step 3 – Read the introduction

Before you begin the activities in the scenario, read about what you need to know and what you need to do within the scenario. The "What you need to know" area will indicate the knowledge you will require to successfully complete the scenario. It would be a good idea to look at relevant learning resources before you start the activities in the scenario.

Step 4 – Start the scenario

Selecting the "Start the scenario" button takes you into the scenario, where you will be able to access scenario activities and the learning resources.

Scenario based learning in the Fitness Toolbox

What is a scenario?

A scenario is a simulated activity in which you need to make choices as you work though the tasks. The scenario is made up of a series of scenes. In each scene you are presented with information about the situation, activities for you to complete and choices you need to make to move onto the next scene. In making these choices, you will need to think about what is happening in the scene and what an appropriate response would be.

What is in a scene?

Each scene that you visit in the scenarios begins with an introduction to what is happening in the scene. Many of the scenes will have an interactive activity for you to complete. The results of the activities will provide you with the information you need to make a choice to go on to the next scene.

In some scenes, you will be able to download one or more files that can be used to record the results of the scene activity. Make sure you save these files to your computer or a disk.

Many of the scenes also have a section called "Points to consider". This gives you some idea of the type of information you need to be aware of to successfully complete the activities and move on to the next scene. The section called "Tutorial hints" indicates the types of learning resources you should consult to make an appropriate choice.

Navigating a scenario

At the end of a scene, you are presented with a number of choices that you can make to move to the next scene. Of the choices offered in each scene, there is only one that is appropriate to the scene. If you select one of the less appropriate choices you will be presented with the consequences of making that choice. You will also be given the option to re-assess your choices. This will allow you to return to the correct pathway through the scenario.

What if I get lost - View your decision pathway.

If you get "lost in a scenario" you can see which scenes you have visited by clicking on the "view" button on the bottom of the page. This will expand a list of all of the scenes you have visited in the current session.

You can print the list of scenes you have visited as a record of what you have done.

You can use the scene selector on the left panel of the scenario window to bring up a list of scenes. Clicking on the title of one these scenes will take you directly to that scene. Please note that the scenes are not listed in the

correct order in which you should progress through the scenario. The scene selector should not be used as a method of navigating through the scenario.

Starting again

If you want to start a new scenario or re-start the one you are currently in from the beginning, click on the Scenarios button at the top of the left panel on the screen. This will take you to the list of scenarios in the competency you are working with. You can click on the competency screen link at the top of the window to select a new competency.

Carrying out activities in Fitness Toolbox Many of the scenes in a scenario contain an activity for you to complete. They all involve you working with one or more clients. These activities are critical to your being able to demonstrate your understanding of the competency. The activities can take several different forms.

1. Listening to an interview

You can ask questions and hear responses from the clients. The interviews also have the responses in the form of subtitles that can be displayed or hidden. This means you can still get the response from the client even if you do not have sound on your computer. To hear the sound of the client you need to click on the audio button. If you click on the audio button again it will turn the audio off.

2. Performing a task

Some of the activities are based on you performing a simulated task such as taking a person's pulse, or determine a person's 1 repetition maximum load. As you do these types of activities, make sure you read the instructions that are presented on the screen with the activity.

3. Recording results

In some scenes, the activity is based on you recording the results you have gathered from the other activities in the scenario. This will give you feedback as to whether you have completed the activities correctly.

Keeping a record of what you do or find out

In most scenes you will need to record the results of the activities you perform. A link is provided on the page for you to download the required record file. Save this file to your computer or a disk so you can keep the file and submit it to your instructor as evidence of having completed the activity.

Submitting your work

Your instructor may require you to submit the records you have saved from each activity. You can use the email link in the Communication Centre to attach your file to a message to your instructor.

Using the learning resources in the Fitness Toolbox

What types of learning resources are available?

The learning resources for each scenario are arranged in a way similar to how you would access information in the workplace.

Ask a specialist

You can seek information from specialist personnel such as the Senior Instructor or a Medical Personnel. Ask a question when you want to get the overall view of a situation and its importance in the scenario.

The bookshelf

You can also read specific articles that are relevant to the scenario in the bookshelf. These provide detailed information on some aspects of the situation presented in the scenario.

The filing cabinet

In the filing cabinet you will find examples of real workplace documents. These include procedures, protocols and forms. Use these if you want specific instructions on how to do something.

Using the learning resources

When should I use the learning resources in a scenario?

The learning resource should be used as you work through the scenario.

Look through the resources first.

You may like to have a look through all of the resources before you start the scenario. This will give you an idea of what you will need to know as you work through the scenario.

Use the resources before you make a choice.

Before you make a choice in each scene in the scenario, it is a good idea to refer to the relevant learning resources. This will ensure you are making choices based on the correct information.

When you have made an incorrect choice.

You should refer to the relevant learning resources when you have made an incorrect choice and ended up in a scene where there is a problem. The "Points to consider" and "Tutorial hints" on the scene indicate the types of learning resources you should regularly consult.
