Once you have logged in, you will be taken to your My Home page. The
side menu bars or Blocks provide you with links for Navigation and
Settings. The side block may contain the following blocks:
1. My Private files: Each user has a private files area for uploading and
managing a set of files
2. Online Users: shows a list of users who have been logged into the
current course
3. Calendar: The following events can be viewed in the calendar block
Global: events added by site administrator Course: events viewable only to course members Groups: events viewable only to members of a group User: personal events that a user can create 4. Latest News: Recent posts made in the News forum are displayed in
the Latest news block, along with a link to older archived news
5. Upcoming events: displays future events in a summarized list
6. Navigation: The navigation block appears on every page of the site. It
contains an expanding tree menu which includes My Home, Site
Pages, My Profile, and Courses.
7. Others:
Links: provides easy access to commonly used webpages Booth resources: provides guest access to generic courses in
MyBoothOnline
Accessing MyBoothOnline/Moodle Access for all courses is through http://myboothonline.boothuc.ca. The Student ID and password is
provided by the Network Administrator, Chris Nelson. If you have forgotten your password and for other
MyBoothOnline/Moodle concerns, please contact [email protected].

You can dock some of your blocks to the left side by clicking on the arrowhead pointing
to the left.
Getting around your courses On the lower part of your screen, you will find the Navigation Bar. You can also use the breadcrumbs.
These breadcrumbs help you find your way back “home”. It is found below the Booth University College
logo. The example below shows that your current location is your ALC Student Orientation course. You
can click on My home to take your back to your Home page.
Downloading resources A course can contain various resources which you will need to assist you in your study. These can take
various forms e.g. text, images, video, webpages, documents, Acrobat PDF files.
1. Select the resource you would like to download.
2. The PDF file opens. Choose where you want to save it on your computer. Then click Save.
3. For other formats (Word, PPT) a window appears prompting you to save the resource to place
where you want to save it.
4. Give it a file name and select Save.
Course Activities Course Activities vary from one course to the other depending on whether the course instructor has
chosen to use these in your course.
Forum
What is a Forum? A forum is a place for discussions. The forums may be public or private (visible to
individuals or within groups). Your professor may or may not create a forum discussion area.
Posting to a Forum
1. Select the Forum Topic you want to post to.
2. Select Add a new discussion topic
3. Scroll down the screen until you see Subject and Message. Enter a Subject and a Message.
4. When you are finished entering your message, scroll down to the bottom of the page and select
Post to forum
5. The following message appears. You edit your posts and click on Continue.

6. The screen shot below shows that the student’s comment was successfully posted to the Forum.
Replying to a forum post
Your instructor may ask you to reply to posts of your classmates.
1. Select the Forum Topic you want to post to.
2. Select one of the messages posted by another member of the class by selecting the topic under
the Discussion column
3. Scroll down the screen until you see Reply, select Reply
4. A new window appears. The subject will be: Re: the topic
5. Enter your Message in the Message area

6. When you are finished entering your message, scroll down to the bottom of the page and select
Post to forum
Assignment
Submitting an Online assignment in Moodle
To upload files and submit an assignment:
1. Select the Assignment you will be submitting. The Assignment page will open, showing
instructions and your submission status (date submitted, grade, etc.) for this assignment.
2. Click on Add submission.
3. The text window appears. To enter online text, type directly into the Online text box.
Alternately, you can compose your submission in a word processing program and then cut and
paste the text into the Moodle text box.

4. Scroll down the screen until you see changes. Select Save changes.
5. The next window will show details of your Assignment submission. You may Edit your
submission, depending on the settings made by your instructor.
Submitting a File for an assignment in Moodle
1. Select the Assignment you will be submitting. The Assignment page will open, showing
instructions and your submission status (date submitted, grade, etc.) for this assignment.
Click on Add submission.

2. Select the first icon to the left, the Add …
3. Find your file where you have saved it. Either double click it or single click the file and select
Open. The file name appears beside the Choose File button.
4. Select Upload this file. Repeat this step if you have more than one file to upload, the uploaded
files will be listed in the Submission draft area.

5. The upload file appears in the File submission box.

6. Find your file where you have saved it. Select the file with a left click on the mouse and bring the
file over to the file submission space.
7. If your instructor gives specific instructions to submit a PDF file, “deposit” the file in the PDF
submission box.

8. Save changes.
9. A screen will appear that lets you know that you have submitted your assignment and the date
that it was submitted.
Journal
1. Select the name of the Journal your instructor has set up for you. 2. Select the Start or edit my journal entry.
3. Type inside the box to add to the Journal.

4. You can also edit your journal and save changes.
Quiz
1. Select the quiz you want to start.
2. Read quiz instructions then select Attempt quiz now button.
3. Once you have answered the quiz on one page, please hit the Next button at the bottom of the
page, NOT the back button of your browser. You can also use the Quiz navigation button found
below the “breadcrumbs” bar.
4. Once you finish answering the quiz you will get a summary of quiz attempt. Click on Submit all
and finish.

5. Not all quizzes have multiple attempts. For those that do, to begin the quiz again, select the quiz
name and select Start attempt.
6. For quizzes that have not yet been attempted, you will see Begin Quiz.
7. Read each question carefully, select the appropriate answer and click Submit to save the
question. If you do not click Submit, the answer will NOT be saved.
8. When you have completed the quiz, select Submit all and finish button at the bottom of the
screen.
9. A confirmation window appears. Click Submit all and finish.
10. A summary of the quiz status is given including feedback, depending on how you instructor has
set up the quiz.

Choice
A Choice activity enables your instructor to ask a question and specifies a choice of multiple options.
This may be used in a subject as a quick poll to stimulate your thinking about a particular topic or to
have the group decide on a particular topic for an assignment.
1. Select the Choice activity link (question mark icon).
2. Select one choice from the available options.
3. Click on the Save my choice button.
4. The window appears that shows a summary of responses, depending on how your instructor set
up the activity.
Viewing your grades
Click on the grades link in the Settings Block > Course Administration > Grades. Your grades will be
displayed. (Note that you may need to click the grade category headings to see grades for individual
assignments).This may vary from course to course
