Model Shop HoursThe model shop, located in 20 Design, is open from 2 to 7:30 p.m. Monday/Wednesday/Friday and 4 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday/Thursday. The shop is available for any student who needs access to power tools and equipment. A $25 fee per semester will be charged to each user, and training is available for those who aren’t familiar with the equipment.

Wireless System UpgradesThanks to a new Computation Advisory Committee (CAC) grant, the College of Design has significantly improved the wireless capacity in the building--we recently doubled the number of access points from 19 to 40! Access points are now located inside classrooms instead of the hallways, and new ones have been added in the faculty office hallways. We hope this will alleviate some of the traffic and congestion on the network, and you should see a real improvement in your connectivity. If you still experience trouble with “dead areas,” please contact Mike Miller.

Reminder: Peer Mentor Applications Due Friday, Feb. 10The College of Design seeks qualified design students to serve as peer mentors for the Design Exchange and Design Collaborative learning communities. To be eligible, you must have completed the first-year Core Design Program and be enrolled in one of the College of Design’s professional degree programs. Pre-design students may apply, but hiring will be contingent upon acceptance into a degree program. Applications are due to 297 Design by 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10. Scholarships for Adult and Nontraditional StudentsFour scholarships administered through the Margaret Sloss Women’s Center are available for adult and nontraditional students. The application deadline for all scholarships is 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10. [See requirements and application forms]

• The Adult Student Scholarship Fund provides adult students at Iowa State with scholarships designed to cover the cost of books and supplies for one semester.

• The Division of Student Affairs Adult Student Scholarship is a $1,000 award given each academic year and is renewable for up to four years.

• The Lee Hadley Scholarship is a $1,000-$1,500 scholarship for nontraditional students who are single parents.

• The Rosenthal Scholarship is a $1,500 scholarship awarded to nontraditional students who are single parents.

Pappajohn New Venture Student Business Plan CompetitionIowa State undergraduate and graduate students are invited to submit plans for startup businesses to the Pappajohn New Venture Student Business Plan Competition. Three $100 prizes will be awarded to the top three winners in the Iowa State Regional Competition, who will then compete in the finals. Three $5,000 prizes will be awarded to the top three plans in the state. Interested students should submit an “intent to compete” online by Wednesday, Feb. 29.

If your plan has a “values-centered” approach (i.e., doing something good for society, the environment, customers, or the company), you may be eligible to compete in the national Values & Ventures Business Plan Competition (undergraduate only) as well. Help sessions are scheduled at 3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, and Friday, Feb. 10, at the ISU Pappajohn Center for Entrepreneurship, 2625 N. Loop Dr., Suite 2610. Graduate CRP Club Valentine’s Day Rose and Bake SaleThe Graduate Community & Regional Planning Club will sell red roses and sweets (cookies, brownies, bars, etc.) for Valentine’s Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 14, in the Free Speech Zone in front of Parks Library (if good weather) or in the foyer in front of the Dean’s Office in the College of Design (in case of rain/snow). You can also order roses ahead of time for pickup on Feb. 14. Prices are $5/single rose, $30/half-dozen roses, $60/dozen roses. All roses will be sold wrapped in tissue paper and a ribbon with water picks and will be of very good quality. To order now, email Julie Whitson. Otherwise, stop by on Valentine’s Day.

Residence Department Hiring Summer Conference StaffThe Department of Residence is looking for friendly, flexible and hard-working students to serve as summer conference staff. Pay is $7.50/hour with free summer housing at selected Frederiksen Court apartments, a 30-meal-plan block and $400 Dining Dollars (other housing and salary options are available). The job runs from May 9 to Aug. 2. You can stay in Ames and take a class (optional)! Application packets are due by 5 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 15.

Sign Up for Free Sketching WorkshopAll students, regardless of prior experience or skill level, are invited to attend a freehand sketching workshop with Matthew Brehm, associate professor of architecture at the University of Idaho and a correspondent for Urban Sketchers. The workshop will be from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, in 130 Design and will offer instruction on fundamentals and advanced techniques for observational sketching. Topics will include composition, basic perspective, value, media choices and discussion of sketchbook types and uses. Bring a sketchbook or pad of paper, pens and pencils (watercolors optional) to the workshop. Financial Aid Peer Counselor Position AvailableThe Office of Student Financial Aid seeks a half-time financial aid peer counselor up to 20 hours a week, $10 per hour (first year), increasing to $11 in the second year. You must be eligible for college work study and have junior or senior status as well as a cumulative grade-point average of 3.25 or better. Position responsibilities include counseling students and parents at the front desk, over the phone and through email about financial aid resources and program eligibility requirements; assisting with financial aid applications; making awards and award adjustments, among other duties. Margaret Sloss Gender Equity Award NominationsNominations are being accepted for the Margaret Sloss Gender Equity Award. Nominees should have demonstrated a commitment to helping women gain equity within the university and/or the Ames community. Significant contributions come in many forms, from public acts such as organizational leadership to personal acts such as academic and professional mentoring. Those eligible for awards include Iowa State faculty and staff, undergraduate and graduate students, and Ames community members. The award will be presented at the Margaret Sloss Gender Equity Awards reception March 20 at the Memorial Union. Nomination forms are due Friday, Feb. 24.

Graduation Deadlines and Thesis SeminarsGraduate students planning to submit a thesis during spring, summer or fall should attend a thesis seminar to clarify procedures, format requirements and common problems for online submission of graduate theses and dissertations at Iowa State. Seminars will be held from 3:10 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 15; 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23; 10 to 10:50 a.m. and 4 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, March 7, all in 1115 Pearson. College Award NominationsSeveral College of Design student, staff and faculty awards are up for grabs--some with large stipends attached! The college’s Awards Board will accept nominations for advising, research, teaching, service and extraordinary performance awards (including for graduate and undergraduate assistants!) until 5 p.m. Friday, March 2. Please note that students can nominate peers, faculty or staff members, too! Don’t miss your chance to honor someone who has made a difference in your college experience. GPSS Regular Allocation Requests Due Feb. 24The Graduate and Professional Student Senate (GPSS) is accepting regular allocation requests for graduate student organizations. GPSS accepts one application that allocates up to $1,000 per academic year to organizations that serve only graduate and professional students. Funds can be used for inviting speakers, purchasing software or journals (not available on ISU campus), or in other ways to supplement the education of graduate and professional students. Information on allocations and the application with instructions can be found under the Allocations tab on the GPSS website.

Please note there have been numerous changed to the regular allocation process, so please read the guidelines! Regular allocation forms are due by 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24 -- no exceptions!
