Therefore, a Morton College student-athlete is expected to demonstrate integrity, accountability, loyalty and sportsmanship. Competition doesn’t start and stop on the playing field; compete in the class room and compete in life. We look forward to your leadership, commitment, and talents being on full display while being a part of the Panther family. On behalf of our coaching staff and athletic department, we wish you success on the field and in the classroom. GO PANTHERS!! All the best,

Commitment to Academic Success

Academic and athletic success is of the utmost importance at Morton College. Positive class attendance and continuous communication with instructors will show significant benefits for student-athletes. Student-athletes are expected to attend all classes, communicate with instructors on a regular basis and work closely with the athletic department.

The athletic department places an “athletic restriction” on all student-athlete accounts during the duration of his/her sport participation. This restriction helps minimize the chances of ineligibility, possible administrative issues and to ensure the return of college equipment. The restriction will not allow student-athletes to register/modify their class schedules online. All student-athletes must meet with the Academic Advisor to Athletics to register, add and drop classes. The restriction will only be removed from the student-athletes account by the completion of his/her two-year sport eligibility or at the request of the student-athlete if he/she no longer wishes to participate in a sport.

All student-athletes must identify themselves to all instructors the first week of each semester. This will help when progress reports are sent out and if an instructor has issues/concerns. Student-athletes are responsible for: reading each class syllabus, knowing how to get in contact with each instructor and completing all assignments and tests required. Student-athletes will uphold the Academic Honesty Policy and refrain from Plagiarism. For more information regarding the Academic Honesty Policy and Plagiarism, please read the Morton College Catalog.

Instructors may initiate an administrative withdrawal from a class, e.g. for unacceptable attendance, lack of progress, inability to pass the class or failure to meet course requirements as outlined in the syllabus, without notifying students in advance. If a student-athlete drops below 12 credit hours (full time status), it will result in immediate ineligibility from participation during the remainder of that semester and most likely in the following semester(s). It may also cause forfeiture of games and negative publicity for the student and the team. Athletes are required to immediately inform their Head Coach and Athletics about any missed classes that occur, regardless of the reason.

It is the student’s responsibility to find out if they will miss all or part of any class due to official team contests or travel. Instructors should be notify first verbally by the student-athlete then by writing by an official class absence note sent by Athletics a minimum of one week in advance of the anticipated absence. Student-athletes are responsible of notifying Athletics a minimum of one week in advance. Student-athletes will receive a maximum of 3 absence notes during his/her active sport. Student-athletes will not miss class for practice sessions. The student-athlete agrees not to use athletic participation as an excuse to miss all or part of any class when it is not approved or authorized.

Remember you are a student first, an athlete second.

7

Morton College Athlete Code of Conduct

Each student-athlete accepts responsibility above and beyond that of the general student body with regard to his/her conduct as a representative of the College. It is a privilege, not a right to be a member of Morton College Athletics, and therefore, he/she is held to a higher standard. Each student-athlete will abide by the Student-Athlete Code of Conduct, policies and procedures, as well as the rules and regulations that have been established by Morton College, the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference, the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) and Region IV.

Attendance – Attend all sport practices and meetings faithfully. If you are to miss, contact

the coaching staff immediately. Follow all reasonable requests made by the Athletic Director

and Coaches, especially those involving practice, rest and competitions.

Use of College Property – All equipment and/or uniforms issued to a student-athlete must

be returned in satisfactory condition to the Head Coach. Student-athletes will be financially

responsible for the replacement costs of lost, stolen, or damaged property. Failure to comply

will result in a “hold” being placed on your account.

Alcohol, Tobacco and Drug Use – The college policy states that each student-athlete

refrains from illegal substances at all times. The NJCAA bans the use of alcohol, drugs and all

tobacco products during any athletic related event, scrimmage, practice, travel, or games.

Failure to comply will be treated on an individual basis and may be grounds for suspension

and/or dismissal from the team.

Hazing/Bullying – Occurs when you intentionally, knowingly or recklessly do something to

another person that you know or should know may endanger the physical safety or health of

that person for the purposes of pledging, joining, participating in, or maintaining membership

within an organization, such as a fraternity, sorority, club, service group, social group, or

athletic team. Hazing is illegal in the State of Illinois and is punishable by both imprisonment

and monetary fines. Prison time and the amount of money owed increase depending upon the

severity of the harm caused.

Social Media - Student-athletes are not forbidden from using social media sites, but must be

aware that third parties including the media, faculty, staff, future employers and NJCAA

officials can easily access their profiles and view all personal information. This includes all

pictures, videos and comments. Inappropriate material found by third parties affects the

perception of the student-athlete, the team, and athletic department.

o Examples of inappropriate and offensive behaviors may include, but are not limited to,

depictions or presentations of the following: Posting photos, videos or comments

showing the personal use of alcohol or chewing tobacco, that are of a sexual nature,

depicting the use of illegal drugs and using inappropriate or offensive language in

comments, videos and other postings. This includes threats of unsportsmanlike, violent

and derogatory comments towards peers, coaches, and Morton College.

If you are ever in doubt of the appropriateness of your social networking site,

consider how it reflects you, your team and Morton College.

Always try to present a positive image.

shall be given to the Region, the Sport Committee and the Standards and Ethics

Committee by June 15 of that academic year.

Section 6. Jurisdiction:

A. Single person ejections – Region Level B. Multiple person ejections and Non-collegial incidents – NJCAA National Office

Section 7. Appeals:

A. Participants in all NJCAA certified sports are subject to the penalties listed for the

ejections.

B. There is no appeal of a game(s) suspension resulting from an ejection by a game

official except:

1. When there is the college’s irrefutable game video evidence that the wrong

student-athlete(s)/coach(s) was ejected. If the wrong student-athlete/coach

was ejected, the penalty will be assessed to the student-athlete(s)/coach(s) in

violation and he/she will serve the complete suspension.

2. All game suspensions will be in effect during the appeals process.

3. Only the institution of the student-athlete(s)/coach(s) that was ejected can

appeal.

4. The NJCAA National Office will rule on all appeals.

5. The level of the ejection cannot be appealed (violent vs. non-violent).

C. There is no appeal of a ruling made by the NJCAA National Office in the case of a non-

collegial incident. The NJCAA has a zero tolerance philosophy when it comes to

sportsmanship that is found to be less than the expected standard, and the negative

image unsportsmanlike conduct brings to our member colleges and association, when

it is exhibited by our student-athletes, coaches and/or personnel.

Section 8. Game Officials and Game Management Personnel: An act in which physical contact or an attempt to make physical contact occurs with the purpose to do damage, harm, intimidate, incite a fight or otherwise injure a game official and/or game management personnel will lead to a suspension of a minimum of two games and a maximum of one year. Section 9. Suspensions: Personnel and athletes suspended under these NJCAA rules shall not be allowed in the facility/gym/field/complex before or during the contest and may not coach or participate before the game, during play, or at half-time. Suspended coaches may travel with the team. Suspended athletes may not travel with the team while serving a suspension.

A. Suspended coaches may travel with the team. B. Suspended athletes may not travel with the team while serving a suspension.
