New Kid On The Block... Top English jockey Pat Eddery, who is to retire at theend of the season, was active for the first time at amajor yearling sale, buying Hip 124, a filly by Bluebird, for i55,000. The daughter of the unraced mareKathleen's Dream (Last Tycoon {Ire}), whose 2000 foalwas stakes winner Castor Troy (Ire), is from a familythat traces back to the speedy filly Ancient Regime, winner of the G1 Prix Morny and the dam of Groupwinners Rami, Crack Regiment and La Grande Epoque. The 11-time champion jockey revealed, “I liked thatfilly, she is lovely and very athletic and looks like shemight be an early runner. I am putting together syndi-cates and all will run under the ‘Pat Eddery Racing’colours. We will be going through all major yearlingsales this year and, obviously, for the first season weare looking for precocious types that will make it to theraces early. It has not been decided yet who will trainthese horses. It is a new and exciting challenge.”

He Is the One... As was rumored yesterday, the new man at the salesis standard bred owner Lucien Urano. After buyingthree Saturday, including Hip 26, the Sadler's Wells--Monevassia filly that he purchased through QuesnayBloodstock for i320,000, and Sunday's saletoper, Hip110, for i370,000 through Guislain Bozo, he boughtquite a few more Monday, including Hip 139, a colt byfirst-season sire King's Best out of stakes winner Maggifor Margaret (GB) (Shavian {GB}) for i225,000. Theman built a textile empire in France. “I started fromnothing and I did it through hard and honest work,” hesaid. “I expect the same from people that work for meand hope it will be exactly the same inthat new involvement. I started with harness horses asI used to go racing there with my grandfather, but Ihave also seen great Thoroughbreds run, like Molvedo(GB). With harness horses, I first started buying tophorses in training three years ago as I wanted quality. Now I own four farms and I love breeding. I havebought the Haras des Monceaux near Deauville and Iwant to have Thoroughbreds on it, so I am buyinghorses here in Deauville to start. I will also buy at othermajor sales in Europe, including breeding sales. I amlooking for quality, but it's not contradictory with quan-tity.” He added, “Some say that I do things too quickly, but I am not that young and I want to find somethingthat will last. I hope that when the sale is over, I willhave about 15 heads. Criquette Head and Carlos Lernerwill train for me, but possibly others also.”

Back in Action... Several major buyers at Deauville had a hard timebuying during the first two days of the sale, regularlygetting outbid, but found good opportunities Monday. That include 6C Racing of Andreas Pusch, owner of lastyear's G1 Prix Vermeille winner Pearly Shells (GB), aswell as Peter Doyle Bloodstock, Bozzi Bloodstock Ser-vices, BBA Italia and French trainers Freddy Head; HenriAlex Pantall, Jean-Claude Rouget, Robert Collet, Jona-than Pease and David Smaga.

First Time Lucky... Known as a successful buyer of young horses, trainerMark Johnston was in Deauville Sunday to saddleDarasim (Ire) to win the G2 Prix Kergorlay. An hourlater he went to the Deauville Sales for the first timeever and bought one, Hip 115, a colt by Theatrical (Ire)out of stakes-placed Hasene (Fr) (Akarad {Fr}). The damis a sister to Group 2 winners Execute (Fr) and Tot OuTard (Ire). Johnston stayed overnight and bought Hip133 yesterday, a colt by Anabaa out of Les Planches(GB) (Tropular {GB}), herself a sister to Group winnersMousse Glacee (Fr) and Majoune (Fr); and Hip 217, afilly by first-season sire Diktat (GB). “Deauville is alovely place and I will certainly be back,” he said, butadded, “I would have liked to have more horses to lookat as it is hard to justify the trip for just three horses.”he continued, “Two of the three horses that I boughtare foreign-bred horses, which is strange in Francebecause the French-bred horses are eligible for suchhigh premiums. But foreign-bred seem to be cheaperthan the French-bred.”

SONS OF NUREYEV A few weeks ago I wrote in this column that “ifPeintre Celebre can continue to sire performers ofthis calibre, he is going to justify Coolmore’s faith inNureyev as a sire of sires, as is Fasliyev, judging byhis very encouraging early results….With Stravinskyalso notching up some promising winners from hisfirst crop, it looks as though there are going to beplenty of chapters to add to Nureyev’s story as a sireof sires.” Well, last week provided one of those chapters, with each of these three Nureyev stallions beingrepresented by a high-class juvenile winner. Stravin-sky got off the mark at Group level when his sonBalmont won the G2 Gimcrack S., then Fasliyevnotched up his fourth Group winner from his remark-able first crop when Carry On Katie maintained herunbeaten record in the G2 Lowther S. Finally, PeintreCelebre completed an extraordinary treble when Pearlof Love ran out an impressive winner of the G3 Futu-rity S. With the future in mind, it could pay to take a lookat each of these three very talented two-year-olds,especially as there are some strong links betweenthem. I apologise in advance if the explanation ofthese links becomes a little hard to follow. The most obvious of these connections is thatBalmont and Pearl of Love each has a Seattle Slewmare as his dam and each has a grand-daughter ofRaise A Native as his second dam (Balmont’s is theAlydar mare Altair, while Pearl of Love’s is Mr. Pros-pector’s daughter Mr. P.’s Girl). The Seattle Slewconnection looks all the more significant in view ofthe fact that one of Fasliyev’s Group scorers, theimpressive Russian Valour, is out of a mare by Seat-tle Slew’s son Septieme Ciel.

Strong ties to Seattle Slew.. I would have struggled to predict the scale of thissuccessful link between Nurevey’s sons and SeattleSlew line mares, even though Theatrical, Nureyev’smost accomplished stallion son, has the likes of Astra,Humbel and Showlady among his sizeable number offoals out of Seattle Slew mares. Seattle Slew himselfsired three stakes winners from a relatively small num-ber of foals out of Nureyev mares, while Nureyev’smatings with Pearl of Love’s dam Aunt Pearl resulted inSocial Charter, a dual Grade III winner at up to 1 3/16miles, and the Group-placed Kalidasa. To get back to Balmont and Pearl of Love, it is inter-esting that Pearl of Love’s third dam, the celebratedNative Street, is also the third dam of Balmont’s sireStravinsky. Native Street, of course, was a daughter ofNative Dancer, a stallion who has exerted a powerfulinfluence in the pedigrees of each of the juveniles underreview. Carry On Katie is inbred 3x3 to Mr. Prospector, and5x5x5x6 to his grandsire Native Dancer, while Balmontis inbred 5x6x5x5x6 to Native Dancer, including 5x4 toMr. Prospector’s sire Raise A Native. For his part, Pearlof Love is inbred 4x4 to Raise A Native and 5x5x5x4 toNative Dancer. I have pointed out before that, to my eye, Fasliyevbears a much stronger physical resemblance to hisbroodmare sire Mr. Prospector than to Nureyev. It al-ready looks as though doubling up on Mr. Prospector isgoing to play an important part in Fasliyev’s successstory, because his other very fast juvenile daughter,Much Faster, is inbred 3x4 to Mr. Prospector and so ishis son Sgt Pepper, a stylish winner of a Listed raceover a mile earlier this month. The second line of Mr. Prospector has come throughhis sons Woodman (Carry On Katie), Gone West (MuchFaster) and Hello Gorgeous (Sgt Pepper). Woodmanalso appears as the broodmare sire of Super Celebre, whose second in the French Derby confirmed his stand-ing as one of the best members of Peintre Celebre’sfirst crop.(Pedigree Insights cont. p4)

P N E W S T O D A Y P(Pedigree Insights cont.) Breeders using sons of Nureyev are bound to try toreinforce the influence of Nureyev’s dam Special, whoalso ranks as the second dam of Sadler’s Wells andFairy King. Fasliyev already has a Listed winner, Nee-dles And Pins, out of a Fairy King mare, while PeintreCelebre has sired the very good colts Fantastic Loveand Carpanetto from daughters of Sadler’s Wells. Theseanimals are inbred 3x3 to Northern Dancer and 3x4 toSpecial. Sadler’s Wells also sired Miss Profile, the sec-ond dam of Carry On Katie, so there is plenty of en-couragement for further experimentation with this typeof cross. Special’s dam Thong was a sister to Ridan, Moccasinand Lt. Stevens, which has allowed the Wildensteinfamily to try doubling up on their parents, Nantallah andRough Shod. They have sent Peintre Celebre mares byLear Fan and Alysheba, who were produced by a pair ofsisters by Lt. Stevens, and their Group 2 winner ValleeEnchantee is out of a Lear Fan mare. Perhaps we should be careful in attributing all thecredit for Carry On Katie and Much Faster to their in-breeding to Mr. Prospector because they are also inbredto Northern Dance (3x4 and 3x5 respectively). Balmontis also inbred 3x4 to Northern Dancer. All three winners under review also have at least onefamous name in their bottom line. I have already men-tioned that Pearl of Love’s third dam is Native Street, while Balmont’s fourth dam is none other than QueenSucree, dam of the Kentucky Derby winner Cannonade. Perhaps less well known, but equally worthy of men-tion, is Carry On Katie’s fourth dam, Cawstons Pride, who won the Lowther S. some 33 years before herhighly-strung great-great-grand-daughter. Although shewas unfashionably bred, Cawston’s Pride showed ex-ceptional ability in winning all eight of her juvenilestarts and she extended her sequence to nine at three, before her temperament got the better of her. Cawston’s Pride lived only long enough to producefour foals but they included the champion sprinterSolinus and the dam of the champion American mareKostroma.

SKY MESA MAY HAVE FOOT BRUISE TOBLAME FOR DULL TRAVERS EFFORT TrainerJohn Ward Jr. suggested that stable star Sky Mesa(Pulpit), who finished last in Saturday’s GI Travers S. atSaratoga, showed signs of heat in his right front footyesterday, reports Thoroughbred Times. “He mighthave bruised his foot a little bit,” Ward told Thorough-bred Times. “That may be the reason why he stoppedso short after the half-mile pole.” Undefeated at two,the bay recorded his best finish two starts back whensecond, beaten 1 3/4 lengths, to Peace Rules in the GIHaskell Invitational at Monmouth Park Aug. 3.

PLETCHER PRIMES TEAM Trainer Todd Pletcher, who has been smoking hot with 33 winners at thecurrent Saratoga meeting, worked a trio of top juvenilesyesterday in preparation for their respective Grade Idebuts. Derrick Smith’s Chapel Royal (Montbrook),winner last time out in the GII Sanford S. at SaratogaJuly 24, worked five furlongs in 1:01 1/5, the 10thfastest of 20 moves on the day. GIII Bashford Manor S.victor Limehouse (Grand Slam), owned by DogwoodStable, also hit the track yesterday, covering a half milein :49 1/5 over the main track. The chestnut recordedthe 13th fastest of 30 works over the surface.“[Limehouse] worked well and came back in goodshape,” said Pletcher, adding, “[Chapel Royal] put in asuper work. They are both feeling great.” Both coltslook likely to make their next starts in the seven-furlongGI Hopeful S. over the track Saturday. “In a perfectworld, you would never run two of your horses againsteach other,” Pletcher said. “But you have to do what’sbest for each horse and each owner.” Value Plus (Unbri-dled’s Song), a runaway winner in his debut atSaratoga July 26, negotiated six panels in 1:14 flatover the main track. The roan is scheduled to make hisnext start in the GI Futurity S. at Belmont Park Sept.14. Pletcher also sent out turf specialist Balto Star(Glitterman), winner of the GI United Nations H. atMonmouth Park July 5. The five-year-old worked a halfmile in :48 3/5 and completed five furlongs in 1:02 2/5.The Antsu Stable gelding will make his next start inBelmont’s 11-furlong turf affair, the GI Man o’ WarSept. 6, or the nine-furlong GII Kentucky Cup Classicover Turfway’s main track Sept. 13. According toPletcher, “The pace scenario will be the biggest factorin picking a race.”

SHINE AGAIN POSSIBLE FOR RUFFIAN Hall ofFame trainer Allen Jerkens is considering the 1 1/16-mile GI Ruffian H. Sept. 13 for Shine Again (WildAgain), who just missed recording a third-consecutivevictory in the seven-furlong GI Ballerina H. at SaratogaSunday. “We’re thinking of stretching her out,” admit-ted Jerkens. “She doesn’t have that burning desire ofgoing to the lead, but I know she can rate kindly. I thinka mile would be better for her, but we’ll try her at amile and a sixteenth.” Personal Ensign heroine PassingShot (A.P. Indy) may also start in the Ruffian.
