President’s Message

Dear Members,

Although we are making strides on catching up with the newsletter, the amount of time and work it took to produce one of the most memorable issues (the 2012 specialty issue) made our decision a bit easier. To ensure thatwe are able to meet our

commitment to get the newsletter back on schedule we have had to reduce the size of the last two issues for 2012 and the first two issues of 2013.The 2013performance issue will be close to being on schedule as wellasmeetingwithmostofyourexpectations.

The newsletter is not the only place our volunteers arebusyatwork.Pleasetakealookatourwebpageswww.bsca.info.Therehavebeensomerecentchangesto include Titling Events for both BSCA and events held by other clubs where our dogs can earn titles.Informationforallofthiscanbefoundhere.

Chancerys Mon Ami “ AMI”Ch. Lebeau’s Playing with Fire X Ivresse de Treres Bergeres

“The first impression of the Belgian Sheepdog is that of a well-balanced, square dog, elegant in appearance, with an exceedingly proud carriage of the head and neck. He is a strong agile, well-muscled animal, alert and full of life. His whole conformation gives the impression of depth and solidity without bulkiness”.

Barbary Coast Belgian Sheepdog Club

Northern CaliforniaSubmitted by Carole Murphy

The Barbary Coast Belgian Sheepdog Club (BCBSC) met on August 3rd, 2013, at the home of Lorra and JamesMillerinLosGatos,California.TheBCBSCisan informal club of Belgian Sheepdog fanciers formed in1986.Namedafterthefamous"BarbaryCoast"ofSan Francisco, the club's membership is primarily from Northern California and the San Francisco Bay Area, but as with most of our meetings, many members came

a long way to catch up with friends and enjoy this lovely day! Cathie Rossman drove in from Gardnerville, Nevada – Lake Tahoe east and Janet Delight came from Truckee, California - Lake Tahoe west (both sides of the Sierras represented), Denise Schryver from Atascadero and Lynne Narez from Santa Barbara, representing the south coast! The BCBSC is not exclusive to BSDs - it includes a number of Belgian Tervuren and Malinois members too!

The BCBSC usually meets about 4 times a year, often holding workshops and seminars in obedience and conformation handling, grooming and structure, herding, tracking, agility and nosework - and just plain

This meeting onAugust 3rd was one ofthose - a chance to vote in new members, play some agility, watch puppies meet/play, and share a beautiful dayandwonderful lunchhostedbyLorraandJames.James broke out some lovely wines for people to try - the Santa Cruz mountain region above Los Gatos and along the Summit Road up to San Francisco, has several vineyards and wineries which have been gaining great recognition state-wide and beyond, especially for reds like Merlot and Cabernet. Many delicious desserts

were brought and enjoyed - but the center-piece was the fun and delicious Agility Cake (see photos) brought by CathieRossman.(Agilityequipmentnotedible-willhopefully appear again on a future cake!) After lunch a meeting was held, new members voted in, additional memberships received, and the next event planned for thefallwillbeaNoseworkSeminar.Lynne Narez (Santa Barbara) and her new puppy Tikos got to meet his sister Rosie (and owner Karen, from Los Gatos) for thefirst time since leavingeachother and

Missy, Now Miaby Lisa Leffingwell, Southern Coordinator, BSDRT

“In the Beginning….”

Shortly after the 2012 National, it came to the attention of the BSDRT that a possible BSD was in a shelter in the St.Louisarea.“Missy”hadbecomethesheltermascotandspenttimeintheofficewiththeshelterofficestaffevery day. However, she needed to move on to herhome andBSDRTwas contacted. The shelterwasn’tin a great hurry as she had taken to the shelter manager andviceversa.LindaRobeygraciouslyvolunteeredtoidentifyherasBSD,yayornay,forBSDRT.Herstorywas somewhat fuzzy but was something like she got out of her yard and her owner came to see her but then didn’twanttopaythefeestogetherback.

LindaRobeycontactedmeandconfirmedthatshewasapurebredBelgianSheepdog.Weputthewordoutfora foster home for Missy and Monica Bamford stepped uptotheplate.MonicahadotherBelgiansandMissyfitwellenoughintoherfamily.MonicawaskindtokeepMissyuntilJuneandspentquiteabitoftimewithher.Missy had a couple of idiosyncrasies that overall, were relativelyminorascomparedtootherrescues.

There were quite a few starts and stops with various potential homes for Missy. Missy should have beeneasy to find the perfect home for – she had a goodtemperament, was a beautiful dog, without major issues. However, shewould not workwell with catsand thateliminatedquiteafewapplicants. Then laterit was determined that she would work best in a home with only a male dog. Children were an unknown.Although we started with many people interested in her, theyallfellbythewaysideforvariousreasons.Itwas astounding that a dog that initially seemed easy to

place was repeatedly not the right match for various reasons.BSDRThad placedmore difficult dogswiththeirforeverhomeinmuchshorterperiodsoftime.

InJune,itwasnecessarytofindanewfosterhomeforMissy.Wewenttoworkonanewfosterhome.Sinceit was now the heat of summer, BSDRT decided to try to keep her in the mid-west so that she would be more centrallylocatedfortravelpurposes.PamalaClarkwhohad previously adopted Pirate from BSDRT volunteered tofosterMissy.

Pam set out from her home in Illinois to meet Anne Marie Potchen Lynch who volunteered to transport Missy fromMissouri tomeetPam. I received a veryupsetting call from Anne Marie who reported that Pam had been in a serious car accident on her way to meet Anne Marie – in the course of service for BSDRT! Pam’s own dogs were with her and Pam wouldn’t go in the ambulance to the hospital until she was certain her dogsweregoing tobe takencareof.SharonRoundyput out the word that immediate help was needed in the Peoria area of Illinois and Jana King Behm came totherescue.JanawasabletogetPam’sdogsbeforetheywere even processed into the local shelter. Janaand then Sharon cared for Pam’s dogs while Pam was hospitalized. Thankfully, Pam made a completerecovery.However,wewerebacktothedrawingboardtofindMissyhersecondfosterhome.

Again, weputoutthecallforafoster.BSDRTcontinuedto receive new applications and we were certain one of themwouldberightforMissy.KathyChampinekindlyvolunteeredtotakeMissyintoherhometofosterher.Kathy and Monica met and Missy moved more North to Illinois. Kathy worked diligently with Missy andwithmetowardsafinalassessmentofMissyandthentocoordinatetherightapplicantforMissy.CathieLangand Lynne Narez processed applicants and conducted their interviews quickly so that we could efficientlyland the right home for Missy. It continued to takemuch longer than all involved hoped as we eliminated variousapplicantsas they justwerenot therightfit -some applicants wanted an active dog – not so much Missy, some applicants didn’t have fencing and didn’t seem to understand what it would take to manage Missy without fencing, some applicants decided after going through the process that it might not be the right time to get another dog, or had decided to get a dog ofanotherbreed in themeantime. Itwentonandon.BSDRT appreciated that Kathy continued to foster and work with Missy throughout and continued to introduce Missytovariousapplicants.

Finally! I received the application of June and Tony Alleman.SusanSpinhirnehadrespondedtotheirfirstinquiry quickly and they were very interested! After talkingtotheAllemans,Iwasveryexcitedbutguarded. We had all been disappointed for Missy at various times alongtheway.Bynowitwaslaterinthefallof2012andMissyhadbeeninrescueforapproximately6months.Icontacted Kathy and she agreed to talk to the Allemans andthenletmeknowifanintroductionwasinorder.Aftertalkingtothem, shealsofeltconfidentaboutthemas a wonderful home for Missy! BSDRT shared Kathy’s gorgeous pictures of Missy with the Allemans via the website and they were smitten! They met her and it was meanttobe.SharonRoundyperformedthehomecheckrequiredbyBSDRTandtheadoptionwasapproved.InNovember 2012, Missy joined the Alleman family and theyhavegivenhertheirunconditionallove.Althoughit took longer than anyone anticipated, it all happened for a reason – she was meant to spend the rest of her dayswithJuneandTonyAlleman.

Thanks to everyone that volunteered their time and money to help BSDRT and specifically Missy, nowMia. There were many people involved with Missyand we appreciate so much their efforts. This casewas particularly frustrating at times since Missy was

technically inmy area but still so very far away. Butmany people closer in location stepped in to do the hands on work to successfully foster, transport, and work with the various steps vital and necessary for a successful adoption.BestwishestoJune,TonyandMia.

MISSY FINDS A PERMANENT HOME

By June Alleman

It was late October 2012 and my best friend contacted me in the hopes that I could assist in an adoption event held inHighlandPark, Illinois.Aguardianangelwasbringing 25 pups here from Tennessee kill shelters in the hopes that they could all find permanent, safeandlovinghomes.MyhusbandandIhadhadthesadmisfortune to put down our beloved Beau, a Belgian

He was our second of this wonderful breedandweweregrieving still. My friendwasconcernedthat this predicament would put me in turmoil but I had assured her that I would be happy to assist in this worthyeventandIwouldnotbeconflictedinanyway.I had an eventful day as the puppies were extremely exuberant, to say the least, and I believe all but a few weresuccessfullyadopted.Ilovedthemallbutdidnotfeelaconnectionwithanyoneofthem.

Later that evening I related the details of the event to my husband and went online to show him some of the pupsIhad thepleasureofspendingtimewith.Whileon this site we had found about 10 Belgian Sheepdogs whowereavailableforadoption.Wehadalreadyraisedtwomalesanddecidedtogowithafemalethis time.Wehadsentaninquiryregardingfourofthem.Wehadplanned to seek a breeder for a spring 2013 litter but if we could help a dog in need now, we thought we would investigate.Within10minutesIreceivedanemailfromsomeone named Susan at the Belgian Sheepdog Rescue Trust.ShewantedtoknowwhereIhadseenthesedogsas theyhad alreadybeenplaced.Shewent on to saythat they only had one dog left to place and she was, infact,afemaleabout6yearsold,namedMissy.Sheincluded the link to the website so we might get a look atthegirl.OFCOURSESHEWASADORABLE!Shehadanadorablepatchofwhitefuronherchest.Thiswas quite unusual to us since neither of our boys had astitchofwhiteontheirbodiesuntiltheywereolder.Although we were not really looking we thought it was worthgettingmoredetails.

EDITORIAL POLICY

Belgian Sheepdog Newsletter is a bimonthly publication of the Belgian Sheepdog Club of America, Inc (BSCA) published in the interest of Belgian Sheepdogs and their owners and enthusiasts. The views, articles and advertising appearing herein do not necessarily reflect the attitude or policy of the BSCA, its members, officers, board of directors or editor.

The BSCA and this publication are not responsible for errors and/or misrepresentations in advertising. Articles contained herein may not be reprinted without permission from the BSCA and its author.

All advertised dogs must have either OFA and current CERF numbers, or their equivalent, or give an explanation for the absence (e.g. OFA too young). If this criteria is not met, the advertising material will be returned. Whelping Box listings and ads announcing litters must have OFA and current CERF numbers or their equivalent for both sire and dam. These restrictions do not apply to memorial advertising or for any dog that is deceased.

Letters to the Editor are welcomed; however, only one letter from the same writer addressing any issue will be printed. No letter to the editor will be published that maligns any member or their dog, cites general or specific accusations of misconduct, BSCA or AKC violations, cruelty to animals or breeding malpractice or can in any way be construed as defamatory. Such letters will be returned to their writer with the suggestion that attempts to rectify the problem should be made on a one-on-one basis or the writer may submit a formal complaint to the BSCA Board of Directors for mediation.

Placing a BSCA Newsletter Ad

For the best reproduction on your photos, send electronically in a jpg format in the largest size possible. 300 dpi is best and required for color and no less than 200 dpi for black and white reproduction.

When taking photos for publication, make sure your camera is set at large format, high resolution for best results.

Photos should be sent to [email protected]. They should be sent as attachments (not copied and pasted into the body of the message).

Original photos may be mailed to the newsletter editor for scanning or mailed on a disc with payment.

If you are emailing your completed electronic ad, send as an attachment to [email protected]. Photos for your ad should be sent separately and multiple photos can be sent better in separate emails and sent as attachments and identified in the body of the message.

Ad Order Form is available on the BSCA website by clicking ‘NEWSLETTER’ or requesting one be e-mailed to you by emailing [email protected].

Ad Order Form and hard copy of the ad looking just the way you want it to look should accompany your payment mailed to:

Cathie RossmanBSCA Newsletter Editor1781 Fish Springs RoadGardnerville, NV 89410-6694

When you send your ad electronically, accompanying your Ad Order and payment with a printout is very important. Even if we see your ad as it first comes through into the BSCA email box, we have no idea if it has come through correctly. Since electronic files can get corrupted in transmission as well as when taken from program to program, if advertisers would just send the editor a hard copy with their payment and order, disappointments would be avoided. Without sending a print out of your ad, you are trusting to fate that it will be published correctly because we have no idea how you planned it to look.

If you wish the BSCA newsletter to produce your ad from your rough draft information, mail the information with payment or send electronically to:[email protected], Attn Advertising

Thank You, Your Newsletter Team.
