Greenidgeended as top runscorer with 1,620with Richards second on 1,239. Between them, they compiled nine of the 12 Hampshire centuries in the title-winning campaign. Two of those came in the very last game of the season against Kent at Southampton's County Ground. Richards struck 143 and Greenidge 118 in an opening stand of 334 after Kent had been bowled out lor 322 in their first innings. Greenidge'stop score of the summer came in the third match against Yorkshire at Southampton, where he crackedan unbeat- en '196 in the first innings of a seven-wicket wrn. Greenidge had made his debut for Hampshirethree years earlier and would con- tinue to star for the county until his departure in 1987. Richards, meanwhile,had made his first Hampshireappearance in 1968 and would stay at the county until 1 978. His final appearance came against Leicestershire where he openedthe innings with someonewho was making his Hampshiredebut - Paul Terry. Richard Gilliat's men were the 1973 sea- son's unbeatables as Hampshire won 10 and drew 10 of their 20 outings. The nearest they came to a defeat was in the fourth game of the campaign against Gloucestershire at Bristol. Skittled for 82 in reply to the hosts' 326-8 declared, Hampshire avoided defeat by mak- ing 244-8 in their second innings. Bowling wise, Bob Herman - in his second summerat Hampshire after leaving Middlesex - and Mike Taylor both bagged 63 wickets. New Zealand slow left-armer David . O'Sullivan, meanwhile, took 54 wickets even though he played seven fewer games than ever presents Herman and Taylor. The Kiwi claimed astonishing match figures of 11-41 in Hampshire's 295-runromp. O'Sullivan finished the seasonwith another five-wicket haul againstKent in what tumed out to be his last game for Hampshire.
