The Boy Who loved

Book Review

Author: Durjoy DattaPublication: Penguin Random House India

Durjoy Datta knows how to make his readers emotional. The Boy who loved, thefirst of a two-part romance, is warm & dark, edgy & quirky, wonderfullyrealistic & dangerously unreal.

The book is diary of young boy from Delhi Raghu Ganguly, his family, his plansto study in IIT and a guilt that he harbors deep inside. The guilt of letting hisclosest friend drown in the school’s swimming pool gnaws at him. Thus, helikes to stay away from the world, hiding and shying. As he transfers to a newschool he finds a girl named Brahmi who is just like him shy, silent & intelligent, yet so different. No matters how hard Raghu tries not to, he begins to care for Brahmi. Parallel to hisstory there are another stories which are smoothly interrelated to one another that it leaves thereader hungry for more content.

Raghu’s elder brother Anirban falls in love with a Muslim girl and gets married to her against thewish of their parents. And thus it starts to mess up their lives. Life throws unforeseen challenges atRaghu every second day.

The book is full of tragic twists and turns. The plot does sound simple but the way things unfoldkeeps the readers engaged. The best thing about the novel is characterization. The emotional side ofRaghu is explained to the perfection. The Climax is unexpected and surprising. One might not haveexpected the climax and it gives a lead to part 2 as well.

Some chapters will feel like dragging and depressing but apart from that Durjoy has proved againthat he is a master story teller.
