Hoaxes________________________________________
One Monday morning many years ago the headline on the left appearedin the New York Times, one of the citys most famous newspapers. Thestory described a disaster at the Central Park Zoo: escaped wild animalswere roaming the streets of the city and hunting humans for food. Thereporter said that 49 people were already dead and that the police were
expecting the number to increase during the night. At least twelve of theanimals were still free. In an announcement to the city, the mayor saidthat the animals were dangerous and he told the people that herecommended them to stay at home until all the animals were capturedand taken back to the zoo.
The people, of course, panicked. Everyone stayed at home behind lockeddoors and life of the city stopped. Other newspapers read the story andprinted it, but no one read the final paragraph.
