DOI: 10.1002/nla.424 Editorial Structured Matrices with Applications The International Conference on Structured Matrices was held from May 29 to June 1, 2002 at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the University of Hong Kong. The conference had two major objectives: (1) to improve the dialogue and collaboration between matrix theoreticians and computational scientists, and (2) to reduce the gap between researchers working on the fundamentals and researchers working on real-life applications, with the goals that emerging applications will stimulate new theoretical research and that better theoretical tools will in turn be exported back to the various elds of application. These proceedings contain 25 papers from invited speakers of the conference. The contribu- tions in structured matrices with applications which cover dierent aspects in this research area. Three main research topics are involved in the proceeding: the theoretical analysis of structured matrices including algebraic, analytic and spectral properties; the design of ecient algorithms relying on the properties of structured matrices and the eective preconditioning techniques for structured systems; and the applications to image and signal processing and ordinary and partial dierential equations. On behalf of the organizers of the conference, we would like to thank Owe Axelsson, General Editor of Numerical Linear Algebra with Applications, for devoting a special issue of the journal to International Conference on Structured Matrices, 2002. Structured Matrices with Applications

The International Conference on Structured Matrices was held from May 29 to June 1, 2002at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the University of Hong Kong.
