Airport Flying High Thanks to KingspanThe new 110,000ft² Monarch Airlines hangar at Birmingham Airport

has achieved excellent structural standards thanks to Kingspan’s

uniquely engineered Multibeam product. The state-of-the-art

maintenance facility was designed by D5 Architects to hold multiple

aircraft, enabling Monarch Airlines to repair not just its own fleet,

but other planes too if required. The impressive building covers an

area equivalent to four football pitches, and will provide working

space for up to 300 airport employees.

The steelwork was designed, factory finished in white gloss and

erected by The Monk Bridge Construction Company based at

Elvington, North Yorkshire, in conjunction with AMP Engineers of

Darlington. 850 tonnes of hot-rolled steelwork was supplied and

erected by Monk Bridge, along with 13,500m of Multibeam. The

project also featured 1,100m of Multideck supplied and fixed by

approved installers MSW. The Main Control truss weighed 80t and

it was the heaviest lift that Monk Bridge have undertaken since the

family-run company was formed in 1922.

"Kingspan’s structural products are always our first choice"

explained Richard Newsome, Managing Director of Monk Bridge

since 1985.

"We appreciate the simplicity of the system, which requires fewer components than others on the market. It is quicker, easier and safer to erect, with less time working at height."

Newsome continued "The staff at Kingspan are excellent to deal

with and give us the high levels of service we require to ensure a

slick performance by us on site. All orders and extras are dealt with

quickly and professionally."

Contractors John Sisk and Son Ltd were brought in to construct

the hangar. Marc Moran, Quantity Surveyor at the company,

explained: “We’ve worked with Kingspan on a number of projects,

so Multibeam was a natural choice for us as one of the strongest

support systems around. It gives us a unique, quick and cost-

effective solution for our clients. The high standard of engineering

and excellent green credentials all helped make it an easy

decision.”

Multibeam is easy to install, and can be used in conjunction with

all types of modern cladding systems on bay widths up to 15m.

The improved sigma shape offers added stiffness whilst being the

strongest in the market. The system is also lighter in weight,

making it a cost effective solution on site.

Multibeam is manufactured from sustainable materials and

maintains high green values even at the packaging stage, with

recyclable banding, biodegradable paper labels and ethically

sourced softwood bearers.

Multibeam is available in a range of heights from 145mm to

350mm, flange widths from 65mm to 90mm and gauges from

1.2mm to 2.7mm. The minimum grade of steel used is S450GD,

with Z275 zinc coating, giving an average coating thickness of

0.02mm to each side. Other galvanised coatings are available upon

request.
