In addition, many other varietiesof plastic material are produced inwhole or in part at Lightpill and thelarge new laboratory block completed afew years ago, is an indication of thedetermination of the management tokeep abreast of modern advance.

When the Company was founded only30 workers were employed. The numberhas grown to 700 and the wicket on thesports ground next to the factorypremises is among thc best in the countyand is frequently the scene of cricketmatches featuring leading. amateur andprofessional players.

The RYEFORD SAW MILLS CO.LTD., of Ryeford, Stonehouse, wasestahlished in 1913 and traded as TheRyclord Saw Mills Co. until 1950, whenon the 29th of September in that year,it was incorporated as a Iimited com-pany. Principal products are home-grown hardwood in planks, boards andscantlings, coffin sets, turned woodgoods, packing c!ase and crate timber,mlll'h of which go for export indirectly.

MESSRS. JAMES & OWEN Ltd., ofRussell Street, Stroud, must have beenan established business for about onehundred years. Sixty years ago the busi ,ness was owned by Mr. George H. Jamesand he had certainly had it for twentyto twenty-five years. After Mr. Lames"death the business Wl\S formed into alimited company under the chairman-ship of Mr. A. T. Ford (of Restall andFord, auctioneers, Rowcroft), and Iator-under Mr. Henry Workman (chairman).At this time Mr. H. M. Owen, who hadbeen in business at " Elliotts " old shopin High Street, joined the firm underthe name of James & Owen Ltd. Mr.Owen went to the First WorId War amInever returned. Mr. Ashman Carterwas cIlJairman after this, and, in 1926,the business was purchased by Mr. E_Felix Withey, who is still the chairmanand PJ.anaging director.

Some eighty years ago the father ofthe late Mr. Walter Collins, founded aprinting business in King Street, Stroud,.under the title of William Collins. The fiTm was founded in18S4-the same year as the" Journal"and its advertisements appeared in .ourearliest issues just as they do t'Oday. Thefirst premises were in High Street.Products include high-standard men'swear, b'Oys' and girls' school wear, shirtsand blouses which are sent t'Oeast, westand central Africa, Rhodesia, theMiddle East, France, Bermuda andmany other parts of the world.
