Rationale A major constraint in drawing up the proposals for the Stroud division is the geographical position of Wotton-under-Edge. Forming a new division of about 9300 in the south west of the district has a large knock-on effect for the whole southern part, at least, and can produce what looks like odd-shaped boundaries. However, for the most part, the new divisions are coherent, mostly based on current divisions and achieve a high coterminosity of 80%.
Member Support The proposals for the Stroud District Council area are supported by councillors from all political groups.

Stroud Division ST 1 The proposed new division links the parishes lying mostly between the River Severn and the M5 motorway. The A38 road provides the main communication route. The division comprises a combination of rural parishes plus more urban parishes on the outskirts of Gloucester (eg Hardwicke, and Haresfield) where population will increase in the large Hunts Grove housing development). Quedgeley (in the Gloucester City council area) to the north provides a major shopping centre for this division Polling District

Stroud Division ST 2 The proposed new division combines the current County division of Upton St Leonards, Painswick and Bisley with the district ward of Over Stroud. The division is mostly rural with small parish centres. The A46 provides good north-south communications within the division. Stroud Town centre provides the service/shopping centre for the major part of this division. Polling District

Stroud Division ST 5 The proposed new division created around the district wards of Cainscross and Rodborough and is essentially a combination of two similar wards and parishes that have urban areas adjoining Stroud town. Both Cainscross and Rodborough areas look to Stroud town as their principal shopping/ service and education centre, although the Sainsbury’s store at Dudbridge is on the border of the two wards. Secondary schools are provided in Stroud very near to Cainscross (the Downfield grammar schools) and in Cainscross itself (Archway secondary). Polling District

Stroud Division ST 6 The proposed new division comprises mostly of the semi-urban Chalford and Brimscombe and rural Amberley and Woodchester. Stroud town is the major shopping/service and educational centre for the local area. Major advantages of these proposals are combining the Stroud Town wards into one division and linking the similar wards of Cainscross and Rodborough. The largest drawback is the somewhat artificial division to include the wards of Chalford, Thrupp and Amberley & Woodchester. Polling District

Stroud Division ST 7 The proposed new division is based around the existing division and is extended to meet the requirements of the new larger division. The division comprises two small urban centres of similar character, namely Minchinhampton and Nailsworth and rural outskirts. Communications between the two centres is easy via Box and other roads. Stroud Division ST 8 The proposed new division is developed around Dursley and its surrounding parishes. The Coaley & Uley District ward is historically within the natural service area of the market town of Dursley, and the village schools are in the Rednock (Dursley) secondary school catchment area. The B4066 provides a good communication route to Uley and Nympsfield and there are good roads between Coaley and Dursley. Frocester and Leonard Stanley are again easily connected to the rest of the division by roads to Coaley and to Nympsfied via Frocester hill. Polling District

Stroud Division ST 9 . The proposed new division is developed around Berkeley Town and the parishes to the north tend to look toward the Cam and Dursley area as the nearest shopping/service area. The Berkeley district ward is within the catchment area for the only secondary school in the area (in Dursley). The division retains the integrity of Cam parish in one division. Cam has been a major housing area for employees at the Berkeley nuclear power station. There are easy communications between the two areas via the B4066. Stroud Division ST 10 The proposed new division comprises of the current county division of Wotton-under-Edge. This division includes two district divisions plus the district ward of Vale. Most of the Vale ward looks towards Wotton and Berkeley as the nearest small towns and service areas in the division. There are no artificial barriers between the Vale ward and Wotton. The only caveat is that Stinchcombe parish is principally associated with Cam & Dursley rather than Wotton. The parish council made a convincing case on this to the Boundary Commission at the last boundary review. Stinchcombe parish is included as part of this division in order to achieve greater electoral equality. Polling District
