Date: 2/3/10 Update Code #20091217, 20091219, 20091220

All updates are activated in the software when you go to the tools pull-down menu, select update, and choose yes. This will automatically update your software and design manual (user instructions). Updating is fast, simple, and provides you with the most current version of this solution-oriented software.

Print Closet Walls

Organized Living has created an update that allows you to print each wall of a large closets on individual sheets. This was created because when the closets get very large, it becomes difficult for installers to be able to read and understand the specifics of the closets.

GoBy going to the individual closet, select print and then check the box marked “Closet Walls” to print off each wall on its own page. The printout includes a handy outline of the whole closet at the top with the specific wall you are on highlighted so that the installer knows at all times what he is installing and where it is.

Dealer Parts/Price List

This is the second part to our Optimization feature with the first being our Project Grouping feature. The Dealer Parts/Price List gives dealers the ability to find out just how many cartons or packs of items they will need in order to fulfill the order.

Certain product lines require you to carry more product than others, Classica is very difficult to order closet by closet as is Lifetime, but when a customer comes in and wants to have a whole closet or house done in a color that is not what you normally carry, it is always good to be able to find out just what will be needed to order for the job. Any closet that is selected in the Work Order will be added to the Dealer Parts/Price List automatically and all products will be rounded up to traditional carton quantities. This will help you gauge your investment and also help you weed out items that may not be necessary such as using more of the 24” wide product in place of the 36” wide product.

Wall Obstructions

This update focuses on all of the items in the closet that let the homeowner understand why the closet is designed the way it is. Before now only a door has been available to insert into the closet, giving the homeowner an idea of what their closets layout was, but not the full picture. We have added windows, light switches, electrical outlets and an object box so that you can more accurately portray their space.

The light switches and electrical outlets all come in standard sizes, but the window and object box can be placed anywhere on the wall, and any size you can need. This will allow the homeowner to be more comfortable with the layout of the closet, and make a more powerful tool for you to use when selling.

After you have downloaded the software for the first time, there are a couple of things you will want to do to personalize the software for your needs. Here we will tell you the specific items that can be set up in the software so that every time you open a new drawing, it is customized to your company.

Setting Company Data

First set up your Company Information. To access the Company Information, click on the Update Company Information on the Welcome Screen.

Page 5: strongware freedomRail Design Manual · You also can set up defaults for drawing designs. Click on the View menu, then go down and click on Defaults. The Default menu opens and there

freedomRail strongware Design Manual © Organized Living 20184

When you click on that title, the Company Data screen appears.

Fill out the Company Data completely and it will populate all the fields in the Work Order that are appropriate. Make sure that you change the Place Order Email to your ordering email if your company will not be sending orders directly to Organized Living. Click OK to save the changes.

Setting freedomRail Options

At the Welcome screen click on Design Desktop to set up the freedomRail Options.

Page 6: strongware freedomRail Design Manual · You also can set up defaults for drawing designs. Click on the View menu, then go down and click on Defaults. The Default menu opens and there

This takes you to the software with no drawing brought up. The next item to be set up is the Options Default by Clicking Tools and then Options.

The options screen opens to show the options that each product line has. Each product line has its own tab to change its options. For freedomRail you have:

Hardware Packaging • We recommend having the

Hardware Packaging Options setto By the Job. This is the onlyoption that orders hardware.

• Retail Hardware is when retailhardware is stocked at yourlocation and will not bepurchased with each job.

• Bulk Hardware is kept at yourlocation and also is notpurchased with the job.

Wood Shelf Hardware • Plastic Shelf locators are good in

most circumstances, though notfor heavy duty applications.

• If you want something thatpermanently attach the shelf to the bracket you can use either Shelf Screws or Heavy Duty Connectors.

Hanging Rails • Granite Rails can be left uncut on the parts list. (Recommended because it

allows an installer to cut the rail in field so that it can be cut so that thepredrilled holes in the rail meet up with the studs. For heavy duty applications)

• White and Nickel Rails can be left uncut on the parts list. (Not recommendedbecause in home applications are generally not heavy duty)

Select Save as default so that every time you open a drawing these options will be selected. If your version of the software includes freedomRail, Classica and Lifetime Ventilated then follow the steps on the following 2 pages, if not feel free to move ahead.

New > Group:

Opens the Grouping Feature which allows multiple designs to be placed on the same page, while all parts and prices are compiled together on the same page. This feature is going to be removed from the software as the Project Group does much of the same things with more advantages.

• While in Strongware, go to File > New > Group to open a new window

• then go to Edit > Add to select and add designs to the combinedParts/Price List

• as you select and add closet designs, a screen like this will be created

• by checking or un-checking these boxes, you add or subtract closets (andtheir parts and prices) from the combined closet list

NOTE: "cut" items will not group with similar "uncut" items

Page 12: strongware freedomRail Design Manual · You also can set up defaults for drawing designs. Click on the View menu, then go down and click on Defaults. The Default menu opens and there

New > Project Group:

The Project Group allows you to have multiple closets in a Work Order and each closet can be multiplied in the Combined Parts/Price List a different number of times. You can access the Project Group by either opening a new Work Order with the feature activated, located on the left or you can turn the Project Group feature on to any Work Order through the Tools>Project Group option.

Either way you access the feature, when a drawing is created or on drawings that were created in the past you are given numbers underneath that can be used to increase the number of times that that closet is added to the Combined Parts/Price List.

This feature allows you to create one Work Order for an entire Apartment Complex and price all of the closets out on one sheet.

No hardware will appear on the freedomRail By the Job Order Form. It is assumed that if a dealer selected this option and used the freedomRail By the Job feature he would not get the hardware when he placed and received his by the job order but would use the hardware he has in his bulk inventory. 3) By the Job Packaged HardwareThe By the Job Packaged Hardware will be used when the freedomRail By the Job option is going to be used by the designer. The hardware packs created especially for this By the Job option are more economical than the retail packs but are not as large as the bulk hardware packs that would create ridiculous amounts of waist if ordered with the job. Strongware will round hardware to nearest bag quantities Once you need one from a pack it puts the price of the whole pack on the parts price list. It then uses hardware from this pack as design progresses. If you use up the entire pack then it adds another to the parts price list. . Heavy Duty Connector (Metal) Select when you want shelves to be mounted using Heavy Duty Connectors. Select for heavy duty applications or large desk to applications. Strongware will always use this item as default connector when a Desk Top is selected.

Plastic Shelf Locator / Heavy Duty (Metal) Shelf Connectors / Screws Options: Depending on the designer’s preference and according to the amount of weight that may be placed on individual shelves you can either use Plastic Shelf Locator for light weights or either the Heavy Duty Locators and Screws for Heavy Duty loads.

• Plastic Shelf Locators are the suggested method of mounting shelves. This isthe standard mounting option. These locators are placed on the Bracket andhave an adhesive that attaches to the bottom of the shelf. Screws can bescrewed into the bottom of the shelves through the Plastic Shelf Locator.

• When using Screws to mount the shelf the Screws go through holes in thebottom of the Brackets and secure the bracket to the shelf for a more secureattachment.

• Heavy Duty Connectors (Metal) are usually used for shelves that will hold asignificant amount of weight and need more support. When using the HDConnector(Metal) a screw is inserted into the holes in the bottom of theBracket which attaches the connector to the Bracket. Once the shelf is placedon the Bracket a shorter screw is screwed into the flange on the inside of theconnector which attaches to the bottom of the shelf for added support.

Closet Design

If you do not use the Work Order to create your designs, click “Design Desktop” on the Welcome Screen or go to File>New>Closet and use the following design steps to design closets in strongware.

Step 1: Choosing a layout and creating closet wall(s)

When you open the design software you will be prompted to choose a closet layout.

Enter dimensions and press “OK.” The program will open fully and there will be wall(s) in the drawing area. If the closet you are designing has one wall, the flat view is the default. However, if the closet contains more than one wall, the default view will be 3-D. To flatten the walls, go to “View” > “Flatten.” (This allows the user to design in 2-D, which makes it easier to place product.)

Step 1.2: Custom Layout (Multiple Walls Feature)

When using the instructions for “Choosing a Layout and Creating Closet Wall(s)”, you are restricted to designing with up to three walls. If your design requires designing with more than three walls, click on the “Custom Layout” button located on the right side of the “Specify Closet Layout and Size” screen. When you press the “Custom Layout” button, the program switches from the predefined layouts to the Custom Layout dialog. The Custom Layout dialog also contains a “Standard Layout” button to switch back to the predefined layouts.

The majority of the Custom Layouts dialog is occupied by a grid for drawing custom closet layouts. On the right side of the dialog are the controls needed to create the layout. The “Grid Size” ratio buttons define the size of the full grid, either 10'x10', 20'x20', or 30'x30'. Choose the right size for your design.

Below the “Grid Size” buttons is the “Wall Tools” section, which provides four tools for creating the layout; Add, Edit, Delete, and Invert. Click on the appropriate tool to select it.

Page 41: strongware freedomRail Design Manual · You also can set up defaults for drawing designs. Click on the View menu, then go down and click on Defaults. The Default menu opens and there

freedomRail strongware Design Manual © Organized Living 201840

• Add allows you to create new walls by clicking and dragging in the grid. Release themouse button when the wall is where you want it. As you drag, the wall's start and endpositions, width, and offsets are displayed. If the cursor comes close to the end of analready existing wall, the new wall snaps into place to join the existing wall. Pressingand holding down on the “Shift” button while holding down on the mouse buttonforces a wall to be horizontal, vertical or on a 45 degree angle.

• Edit allows you to modify the area where shelves will be placed on any wall you havecreated. As you drag the cursor around while you are in “Edit” mode, the cursorchanges into a rectangle symbol when it is placed at the end of the shelf area, indicated by a rectangle on the wall. This allows you to change the “Offsets” of theshelving area. There will be a space of 24” from the front of a hanging area on a wall tothe side of the hanging area on the next wall. This area is called an “Offset.” It allowsroom for clothes to hang on a wall out to 24” without interference from the clotheshanging on the next wall. You can adjust the “Offset” using the “Edit” tool. The“Offset” for the left and right ends of the shelving area is indicated in the controlslocated below the “Wall Tools.” “Offset 1” refers to the offset of the left side of theshelving area and “Offset 2” refers to the right side of the shelving area as you arefacing the wall. The “Edit” tool also has another function. If you are near a corner ofthe closet layout, the cursor will change to a move cursor (four arrows, one in eachdirection). If you click on the corner of the wall and drag, it will move the corner of thecloset and change the length of the walls. If you click on a wall, you can drag the wallto a new location. In both cases, any connections between walls are maintained.Clicking anywhere else in the hanging area selects the wall and displays its size in the“Width” area in the controls on the right. The controls that show the size of thecurrently selected wall also allow you to change the size of the wall that is selected.Next to the “Width” area there is an up arrow and a down arrow to adjust the size in0.5" increments.

• Delete allows you to delete walls.

• Invert switches the shelving/hanging area from one side of a wall to the opposite side.Click on the “Invert” tool and click on the wall you wish to change.

Below the “Wall Tools” are controls that show the size of the current wall as well as the position of the cursor on the grid. It is visible in the drawing area, represented by the numbers in parenthesis below the “Offset” area. This is the “Cursor Position Indicator.”

Cursor Position Indicator

Page 42: strongware freedomRail Design Manual · You also can set up defaults for drawing designs. Click on the View menu, then go down and click on Defaults. The Default menu opens and there

freedomRail strongware Design Manual © Organized Living 201841

The “Start X, Y” area represents the starting point at which you clicked to create a wall, “X” represents the walls start point horizontally and “Y” represents the walls start point vertically from the (0,0) point on the grid which is located in the lower left corner of the grid area. The “End X, Y” area represents the ending point to release the mouse button to end a wall. This does not have any relevance for laying out the walls but it is important for you to know what these areas indicate.

You will notice there is no “Length” display. This is because you are laying out the walls in a top view so the walls are going to be measured in the “Width” area. This tells you the width of the wall in inches using 0.5” increments. Select “Add” then click and hold down the mouse button in the grid area and drag the mouse in the direction you would like the wall to go. When the desired width is achieved, release the mouse button. Next, click on the end of the first wall, hold down the mouse button and drag until the desired width of that wall is achieved. You can draw walls in any direction and any length as long as you do not go off of the grid. If your design is too large for the specified grid, click on a larger grid selection in the “Grid Size” dialog box. Once your custom layout is complete click “OK.”

*The program tries to create hanging/shelving areas that don't interfere witheach other leaving a 24” space, or “Offset”, between the shelving areas. You canadjust the “Offsets” using the “Edit” tool to allow a cabinet to be placed in anarea with “Offsets” less than 24.” It is the user's responsibility to make sure thatnothing interferes.

Create a Closet with Sloped Ceilings

This option is only available in the Custom Layout area, not the Standard Layout area. The old Custom Layout dialog contained a single Height edit box that defined the wall height for the entire closet. The new Custom Layout dialog replaces the single Height edit box with two new boxes, Start H and End H, which define the wall height at the two ends of the wall currently being added, edited, etc. To create a wall with more than two heights, you must determine the slope of the closet walls. For example, if the side walls slope from front to back, front height being 96 and back height being 52, you would select ADD from the Custom Layout tools and click and hold down the mouse button and drag the wall to the appropriate size. You would then enter 96 in the Start H edit box and 52 in the End H edit box. Create the back wall to be 52” high all the way across so you would enter 52 in both Start H and End H. After you create the third wall, which would slope from the back to the front, you would enter 52 in the Start H edit box and 96 in the End H edit box.

Step 2: Selecting Product Finish

To select the finish of the product, click on the down arrow next to the white box located above the symbol library. A list will appear containing the following: Cherry, White, Maple, Chocolate Pear, Oak, Espresso, Garage, Activity Organizers, Big Cherry, Big White, Big Maple, Big Oak, Big Espresso and Garage Cabinets. The “Big” symbol libraries contain Big O-Boxes.

Page 43: strongware freedomRail Design Manual · You also can set up defaults for drawing designs. Click on the View menu, then go down and click on Defaults. The Default menu opens and there

freedomRail strongware Design Manual © Organized Living 201842

Step 3: Selecting Product

Select freedomRail product from the product symbol library located at the top of the screen. Libraries labeled as “Big” contain doors for the Big O-Box.

Starting from the left and working right, the product symbol library contains the following: Hanging Rails, Hanging Rail Uprights & Wall Mounted Uprights, Profile Shelves, Wood Shelves, O-Boxes, Hanging Rods, 24” Paper Sorter/O-Box Back/Wine Cubby(White Only), Chrome Baskets/Basket Liners, Jewelry Drawer Inserts, Shelf Dividers/Profile Shelf Hook/Book Ends, Valet Rod & Tie Rack, Upright Accessories that work with the Over the Door Hook, Spanner, Corner Rounder Rod, Tiered Profile Shelf and Label Holder.

Step 4: Placing Hanging Rail

Choose an appropriate size Hanging Rail from the Hanging Rail library. Move your cursor onto the closet wall and click and hold down your mouse button. Move the cursor until you achieve wall-to-wall positioning of the Hanging Rail. For walls that are longer than the longest Hanging Rail (80”), place the Hanging Rail against the left side of the wall and add an additional Hanging Rail to achieve wall-to-wall positioning.

Page 44: strongware freedomRail Design Manual · You also can set up defaults for drawing designs. Click on the View menu, then go down and click on Defaults. The Default menu opens and there

freedomRail strongware Design Manual © Organized Living 201843

When placing the Hanging Rail, notice that in the parts/price list below the drawing has a heading for “Cut Length.” The “Cut Length” changes depending on the placement of the Hanging Rail. When the desired length is achieved release the mouse button.

Step 5: Placing Uprights

After you place the first upright in a design, the software is programmed to snap the next Upright to 24” or 30” away from the first. Simply hold down the mouse button and drag to the right. Placement depends on whether you are using O-Boxes, which are 24” wide, or if you are using Big O-Boxes or freedomRail Garage cabinets, which are 30” wide. If you click on the closet wall and hold down the mouse button while holding down the “Shift” key when placing uprights, this will snap the uprights to the 24” or 30” spacing without having to drag the upright to the right until you reach the 24” or 30” spacing point.

Select the appropriate size Upright from the Hanging Rail Upright library. Move your cursor onto the closet wall and click and hold down your mouse button. Uprights can only be placed on the Hanging Rail. Move the Upright against the left side of the wall. (Note: In the lower right corner of the program screen you will notice the “Position

Page 45: strongware freedomRail Design Manual · You also can set up defaults for drawing designs. Click on the View menu, then go down and click on Defaults. The Default menu opens and there

freedomRail strongware Design Manual © Organized Living 201844

Indicator” with the word(s) Left, Back or Right depending on the wall your cursor is on. When creating a layout in the “Custom Layout” feature the placement locator will not inform you of the wall your cursor is on. Next to that are numbers. For example: Back (0.00, 84.00). The first number represents the position of the cursor horizontally or left to right and the second number represents the position of the cursor vertically or up and down. If you would like the uprights to be placed a distance other than 24” or 30” you will have to determine the positioning by looking at the numbers in this area. (You can also go to View>Ruler and use the Ruler to place Uprights in the correct positions.) When placing O-Boxes side-by-side, be sure to plan to double up the uprights.

Step 6: Placing Shelves and O-Boxes

When placing Shelves and O-Boxes, the program knows where items can and can not fit. If two Uprights are spaced 24” apart, the program knows that a 24” Shelf or a 24” O-Box will fit in this area. The program will not allow the user to place an item in a space between uprights that is larger than the size of that item; this is why the placement of the Uprights is so important.

You must use a Shelf that is larger than the space between two uprights if the space is not the exact size as one of the shelves in the library. The program cuts the Shelf to fit that space. The cut lengths of the shelves is reflected in the parts/price list.

Page 46: strongware freedomRail Design Manual · You also can set up defaults for drawing designs. Click on the View menu, then go down and click on Defaults. The Default menu opens and there

Select a Shelf from either the Profile Shelf or the Melamine Shelf library. Move your cursor on the closet wall. Click and hold down the mouse button to the area where you want the Shelf to be placed. You can move the Shelf up or down to the desired position. (If you want to place a Shelf at a specific height you need to determine the height by viewing the position locator in the lower right corner of the program screen.) (You can also go to View>Ruler and use the Ruler to place Shelves at a specific height.) Release the mouse button when the shelf is where you want it. For O-Box placement, the same process applies.

Step 7: 3-D View/Shaded Closet

To achieve a 3D view after your design is complete, click on “View” in the Windows Toolbar and select “Flatten.” If there is a check mark next to “Flatten”, the program is in 2-D mode and the “Rotate” tool will be unavailable. If there is no check mark, theprogram is in 3-D mode and the “Rotate” tool will be available. Clicking the “View” >“Flatten” menu item will toggle the check mark and the 2-D/3-D mode. After the designis in a 3-D perspective, click on the “Rotate” button. Next, click on the closet design andhold down the mouse button. Move the mouse and the entire closet will move todisplay different views. When the desired perspective is achieved, release the mousebutton.

If you have designed an L-Shape closet or a Walk-In closet you can open the walls to show the product on walls that have their back facing you by choosing the “Open Wall” button. After you select this button, click on the appropriate wall and hold down the mouse button. Move the cursor until the wall opens and the product on that wall is visible.

Shaded Closet To view the design in 3D Color go to View>Shaded Closet and the design will open in a window that shows the design in 3D Color. (See pages 27 & 28 for more information about the Shaded Closet feature).

Step 8: Name and Print the Design

You will notice an area in the lower right corner that has the heading “Title Block.” To name your design, click on the “Edit” button and a dialog box will appear. Click in the white area of the dialog box, type the name of the design and click “OK.”

To print the design, click on the “Print” icon in the Windows Toolbar. When the “Print” box appears, click on “OK” and the design will print. Step 9: How to Save and Manage Designs When you click on the save icon, or use “File>Save As” from the drop down menu to save your designs, the software is programmed to open the “My Documents” folder and save all 3D strongware designs in this location. Designs will be saved individually unless you create specific folders that specify a group of designs. For example, if you create ten designs for a customer named Mrs. Smith, you may want to create a folder named “Smith Closet Designs” or “Smith 37 Lumley Ave” (Customer Name/Address), or whatever will work best for you. You must name the design prior to saving it into a folder and then select the folder you want to save the design in. The following is instructions needed to create a folder and save a design in that specific folder.

This will snap your next Upright either 24” or 30” away from the last Upright placed, depending on the product library that you are working from. If you are working from a freedomRail library with 24” O-Boxes the Uprights will be placed 24” apart when using the “Shift” key. If you are working from the Big O-Box library or the freedomRail Garage library, the Uprights will be placed 30” apart when using the “Shift” key.

Changing a Profile/Wood Shelf into an Angled Shoe Shelf: Select a Profile or Wood Shelf and place on the closet wall. Press the “Shift” key and move your cursor up or down to change the Profile or Wood Shelf into an Angled Shoe Shelf. When you have the Shelf in the correct location release the mouse button and then release the “Shift” key. (Note: This function only works for the 12” Profile Shelves and 14” deep Wood Shelves). NOTE: You can also use the 24” and 30” Pre-Drilled Wood Shoe Shelf in White Maple or Cherry. You do not have to use the “Shift” key when placing these shelves as they will be placed on an angle with the Fence.

Place Tiered Profile Shelf on an Angle; Select a 24” or 30” Tiered Profile Shelf. Click and hold down the mouse button in desired location. Hold down the “Shift” key and the shelf will flip over on an angle and the Angled Profile Shelf Brackets will change to Ventilated Shelf Brackets. Release the mouse button to place shelf.

While holding down on the mouse button, press and hold down the “Shift” key to turn a horizontal Grid into a vertical Grid. When the Grid is in the desired location, release the mouse button to place the Grid.

Combining Products in the Same Design: When designing a closet using a combination of products you can place the following products in the same design. freedomRail with Classica or Classica with Ventilated.

freedomRail with Classica: When designing with freedomRail and Classica you must place all Classica items first and then place freedomRail. If you place freedomRail in the design first the only Classica items that can be placed in the design are the Island Cabinets.

Classica with Ventilated: When designing with Classica you can add Ventilated shelving. If you want to start with Ventilated first you can then add Classica. All Ventilated shelving can be combined in the same design with Classica. You can not design a closet using freedomRail and Ventilated in the same design. Stor-Drawers can only be combined with Ventilated products or by themselves in a design.

Corner Rounder Rod

Closet Layout- When laying out the closet walls with freedomRail Corner Rounder Rods, you must have a closet with walls that have 90 degree angles in the corners. You must also change the Offsets to 23” in order for the Corner Rounder to be placed in the design. For a more finished look, you should also butt the shelves in the corners that are located above the Corner Rounder Rod. If you are going to butt the shelves in the corners you must make the Offset, for the wall that has an offset, 15” for Wood Shelves (14” Deep Shelf + 1” Upright) and 13” for Profile Shelves (12” Deep Shelf + 1” Upright)

Upright, Shelf and Rod Placement- When placing Hanging Uprights, you must place each Upright 23” away from the corner for each wall and the second Upright for each wall will be placed 24” apart. Next select a 48” Shelf and place the shelf on the wall without the Offset and place a 24” Hanging Rod below the shelf on the left side. On the wall with the Offset, you will need to place a shelf longer than 24” in order to accommodate for the hang over of the shelf so the shelves will butt in the corner. Make sure this shelf is 15” away from the corner if it is a Wood Shelf and 13” away if it is a Profile Shelf. Place a 24” Hanging Rod below this shelf on the right side.

Placing Corner Rounder Rod – After the Uprights, Shelves and Chrome Rods are in place, select the Corner Rounder Rod and click on the wall on the right side and the Corner Rounder Rod will place. If you used a rod in the 24” section that is longer than 24,” the software will trim it to the appropriate size when the Corner Rounder Rod is placed.
