Setting up the Stomp ClassicThe Peterson Stomp Classic can be set up inthree ways by means of a three positionswitch to the left of the XLR jack socket.

Mode 1100%True BypassIn this position, theinstrument signalflows through thetuner circuits onlywhen muted by thestomp switch to

enable silent tuning. When the tuner isbypassed or unmuted, both the input and theoutput are physically disconnected from the

tuner circuit and the tuner is switched off. Thisallows the instrument signal to flow freely frominput to output without any physical orelectronic contact with the tuners internalcircuits.

    Mode 2

    Tuner MonitorIn this position, the

tuner and DI areactive at all times butcan both be muted toenable silent tuning.

When unmuted, the tuner screen remains onand can still monitor the tuning. The built-in Active DI produces a balanced signal at theXLR socket in addition to the regularunbalanced signal at the jack socketoutput. This feature is suited to acousticguitarists and electric and acoustic bassists, enabling simultaneous connection to anacoustic combo/bass amplifier and/or mixingconsole/recorder.Electric guitar players can tap the DI signalusing an XLR to adapter to power asecond amp, or record a dry signal for laterprocessing.

    Mode 3Active DI

In this position, theClassic Stomp istransformed into amuteable DI with thetuner screen becomingactive only when the

pedal is muted. Your Peterson Stomp Classicis shipped in this default mode.Getting StartedFor normal operation, the tuner can be usedout of the box; no special adjustment isneeded to use with anything from a 10 stringbass to an electric mandolin. After installingthe battery, simply activate the Stomp Classicby inserting a guitar cable into the input jack ofthe tuner, then connect the tuner output jackto the input of an amplifier. Use the StompFootswitch (2) to mute the instruments signaland proceed to tune. The display will scroll counter-clockwise toindicate a flat note and clockwise to indicate asharp note. When finished, use the stompswitch to return to playing.

Reading the Virtual Strobe DisplayYour new Stomp Classic pedal tuners displayfeatures two strobe bands. Underneath theStrobe Screen, the note name is displayed asa large letter along with the octave from whichit is derived which is displayed as a number,E2,A2,D3,G3,B3,E4 for guitar and B0, E1,A1,D2,G2 for bass.To tune, carefully adjust the tuning peg of yourinstrument until the display is immobile orcaged. If the note you are tuning is toosharp, the bars will drift to the right, if flat theywill move to the left..

    Programmable Sweeteners

Custom multi-octave Sweeteners can bedesigned on your computer and up to 100 canbe downloaded into your Stomp Classic via itsUSB port.

Active DIThe Peterson Stomp Classic features a built-inactive DI. Besides running on a 9V battery or

a 9VDC power adapter, the DI will also run onPhantom power from an external source(mixing console etc.) if present. To activatethe DI, adjust the three position mode switch to MON/DI or Active DI. Connect a shieldedXLR cable between the Active DI XLR outputsocket and the device to be connected(recording/PA console). The Stomp Classic isshipped with the DI activated. In this positionthe balanced XLR DI output and theunbalanced jack output are both muted bypressing the stomp switch. The tuner is nolonger True Bypass when the DI is active. The DI also features a Ground Lift switch forthe eliminating of possible ground loops(hum).

To lift the DI signal ground, disconnect thetuner from audio equipment and slide theswitch from GND to LIFT position. Reconnectthe tuner. The Stomp Classics active DI also features asignal attenuation pad for matching aninstrument signals output to the internal DIinput. For high output level signals from the

instrument (e.g.active bass guitar),adjust the attenuationswitch from 0dB to -10dB or -20dBdepending on signalstrength. If the

instruments output level is high, setting theattenuation switch too high will result indistortion from the DI output.

NOTE: The Classics active DI works only whenselected using the three position mode switch.Disconnect XLR cable from DI output when thetuner is switched to True Bypass operation.

Mounting the Stomp Classic on a

PedalboardThe Stomp Classic comes with its ownmounting hardware, which is strong, neat, secure and much more effective than theusual fastening methods. Each corner of theStomp Classics base features a metal lugwhich, when rotated 90 out from the tunerenclosure, can be screwed to the pedalboardfloor, providing an unprecedented rock-solidconnection.

The Stomp Classic- Other UsesBesides being the worlds most accurate pedaltuner, the Stomp Classics active DI offers topsignal integrity over long cable runs, ideal forhigh-end bass guitars, and electro-acousticinstruments.If youre an electric guitarist, the DI can also

be used to connect to a recording device like amixing console/tape machine or Digital AudioWorkstation to record a dry guitar signal whileplaying through the output to your amplifier. Later, you canreamplify the dry signal by sending itthrough your effects and amp while makingtonal adjustments to them in a manner notpossible to do while youre playing.

Using the Stomp Classic as a DIFirst, ensure that the Stomp Classic is in MONor DI mode by using the selector switch.

Electro-Acoustic GuitarConnect the Stomp Classics DI output toyour P.A. or live mixing console with abalanced XLR cable. Connect your instrumentto the Stomp Classics input jack.

Electric Bass GuitarConnect the Stomp Classics DI output to yourP.A. or live mixing console with a balancedXLR cable. Connect the Stomp Classics output jack to the input of your bass amp.Connect your instrument to the StompClassics input jack.

Using the Stomp Classic as an

intonation toolAfter deciding on string gauge, setting stringheight (nut & bridge), neck relieffactors thataffect the instruments intonationconsiderablythe individual string lengthsneed to be adjusted. For this task, use Equaltemperament in the Stomp ClassicsSweetener menu (EQU).

Lower the pickups away from thestrings to avoid "doubling" andelectromagnetic pull.

Lay the guitar flat on a bench toadjust it, but always check the intonation withthe instrument in the playing position, as thereadings will be visibly (and later audibly)different. You should always aim to freeze or"cage" the image on the Strobe Tuner display;the less movement the more accurate theresults.

Where setting the intonation is concerned, anoften-used technique is the 12th fret &flageolet comparison method. In this method, the flageolet or "harmonic" over the 12th fret iscompared to the fretted string at the 12th fret, and saddle position is adjusted as follows:

If the fretted note is flat compared tothe flageolet note, move the bridge saddleforward to shorten the string.

If the fretted note is sharp comparedto the flageolet note, move the bridge saddleback to lengthen the string.

Adjust until both fretted note andflageolet are identical in pitch.

While this is a common system, it is notalways the most satisfactory. One popular alternative is to adjust each stringso that it is in tune at two points an octaveapart from each other on the fret board usinga strobe tuner. Using the 5th and 17th fret asan example:

Tune a string at the 5th fret. Check the string at the 17th.

If sharp, move the saddle back, thuslengthening the string. If flat, shorten the stringby moving the saddle forward. Remember tofret the string using the pressure that youwould normally apply while playing.

Keep repeating this process untileach string is in tune as much as possible atboth the 5th and 17th frets.

This method takes time, and has to berepeated if you change string gauges, but ifproperly executed, yields very satisfactoryresults. Now, before you play music with a lot of 5thson your guitar (e.g. power chords), tune theinstrument using the GTR, BAS, P5TH orG5TH setting, depending on which model ofstrobe tuner you own, otherwise use the EQU(default) setting to tune your guitar.

The methods above are within anybody'sreach, all you need are your ears and yourPeterson strobe tuner!
