FOReWORD

It is a pleasure to welcome you to Dance 11, our graduation season. The QUT Dance performance students have been fortunate to have had many valuable performance experiences this year.

2011 marks the first year in a formal partnership agreement between QUT Dance and EDC (Expressions Dance Company). This rare opportunity will provide our graduating students with valuable knowledge and authentic experiences as they transition into the industry. Twelve students performed alongside the company in July in the R&J season at QPaC, and our collaboration continues with Dance 11.

as a result of our partnership with EDC, we are delighted to present our graduation season in a new format this year, with two distinct programs. The first program showcases the talents of our first and second year performance students with works by guest choreographer Jane Pirani and QUT resident choreographer Csaba Buday. Program two privileges our graduating students with a shared program of works from within the EDC and QUT ranks. The program includes works by Shaaron Boughen, Richard Causer, Elise May, Riannon McLean and Natalie Weir.

Natalie Weir, artistic Director of EDC, is a QUT Dance graduate and Creative Industries Faculty 2009 Outstanding alumni award winner, and we are delighted to be developing our relationship with Natalie and the company. We offer our hearty congratulations to Natalie on winning three major arts awards this year; the 2011 australian Dance award for Outstanding Performance by a Company – Where the Heart Is, and two 2011 helpmann award for Best Choreography in a Dance or Physical Theatre Production and Best Ballet or Dance Work – Where the Heart Is. We also congratulate former EDC company member, Richard Causer, a QUT Dance graduate, for his nomination for Most Outstanding Male Dancer for the australian Dance awards and award of Best Male Dancer for the helpmann awards, and current EDC member and QUT Dance graduate, Elise May, who was nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Female Dancer in the australian Dance awards.

also on this note of congratulation, we are very pleased to acknowledge QUT Dance student Michelle Barnett as the 2011 recipient of the prestigious Patricia Macdonald Memorial Foundation Scholarship for excellence in her studies.

In addition to their work with EDC, in July the third year performance students toured to the Guangdong Modern Dance Festival in China. They attended master classes and workshops, and performed Shaaron Boughen’s …as velvet empties into purple… to an international audience. For the first time the festival also offered the opportunity for students to present their choreographic work and we were delighted that three QUT works were selected for public performance. The Brisbane Festival also provided the third year performance students with an opportunity to work with international artists. In collaboration with QUT’s School of Design, our students performed with Israel’s Tami Dance Company as part of Under the Radar, a context for experimental work within the festival.

Lastly, and very importantly, the Dance staff would like to welcome into the world Felix Wade, born to our colleague avril huddy and her partner Michael, and offer our heartfelt congratulations.

We hope you enjoy the evening and thank you for your ongoing support.

Like an orchestra with complementary harmonies and intended discord the waiting begins. Patience wanes and the race begins - against time, each other and themselves. We are all waiting for something be it abstract - love, joy, satisfaction or concrete - appointment, train, 5pm, dinner. This work brings 24 dancers into a space to wait. Together they play out the game - sometimes patiently, sometimes with a fever but always with dreams, fears and collected stories - but no matter what - they will collide and connect as they discover themselves in the journey through the waiting room.

Lighting Designer andrew MeadowsMusic Melody Gardot Costume Designers Shaaron Boughen Cast 1st and 2nd year BFa Dance Performance The sublimely cool and smoldering elegance of Melody Gardot’s songs is the inspiration and driving force of DANCE TO GARDOT. This work, in 11 sketches, echoes the sultry moods and yearning sensations of Gardot’s tunes - intimations of suffering and resolve. a classic jazz chanteuse, Gardot’s rich-toned voice along with luscious orchestrations, provide a stylish sonic expression of the place were music meets life.

ABOUT GARDOTEvery artist has a story. Melody’s is at the heart of her music. When she was 19, Melody was hit by a car. In the accident she suffered serious head and spinal injuries and her pelvis was broken in two places. Because of these severe injuries she was confined to her hospital bed for a year. During her recovery she used music as a form of therapy, even recording and releasing tracks while still in the hospital. Once out, she started playing around Philadelphia. Before long Universal Records signed her. her first full-length album, Worrisome heart, displayed her gift for transforming the traditions of jazz and blues with her intimate and personal sound. It also set a soulful artist with a small but strong following onto the world stage. (Melody Gardot home Page)

Our collaboration has been in the form of a research project exploring the process of reversioning where we have taken data – set materials, dance vocabulary, music etc from previous works and used it to make anew for this solo. Investigating the creation of authentic movement material has also driven the development of a vocabulary for this work. This is the first iteration of this research which will have its second iteration mid-2012 in Taiwan.
