Dear Church,
Thank you very much for your generosity and support of our family. Our team can feel your prayers and see them affecting the world around us. Thank you for encouraging us with mail and packages when we are on the field. When we open them every month, we think about all the time, energy, cost, and love you happily pour forth for our good. It means a lot.
On this home assignment, so many of you expressed condolences for the loss of my mother. Thank you for caring and showing your care through your actions. Many of you attended her funeral, visited her in the hospital, sent cards, loaned us vehicles and toys or a place to stay. We’re always encouraged by the hospitality of this congregation. Thank you.
I want to remind you of ways we can stay connected while our family is in Laos. Below I am listing our blog web addresses. Follow Kris’ blog and receive insightful emails about life as a mom in the mission field, with pictures of Cannon and Austen (JuJu). Follow Michael’s blog to learn about life in Laos in kind of a goofy way.
I’m also including our email addresses. Yes, you can freely email us anytime. We love to receive emails from people in the States. Please do not be afraid of saying the wrong thing. You will not be the reason we are deported! As long as you avoid the words “missionary” and “evangelism,” everything will be fine. You can ask about our family, the work, our lives, our faith; you can tell us you are praying for us. These are not dangerous things to say! The government, if they even read our mail, knows we are Christian and they expect us to talk about Christian things. The main thing is we don’t want you to be afraid to make contact for fear of getting us in trouble. Feel free.
Finally, I’m including Josh Hardin’s email address. If you are interested in our weekly update email, you can email Josh and he will add you to the list. I send him an update most weeks and he pushes it out to everyone on the list. This is also the list of people who receive our quarterly-ish newsletter.
It has been a great blessing to our family to be among you this summer. We feel as though we have two homes- one with the work on the field in Laos and one here, with our family at West Seventh.

Do you ever struggle with understanding God’s Word?
Have you given up regular Bible study because you find it difficult to identify any application to your busy life?
Have you been a Christian for many years, but still feel like the contents of the Bible are very strange to you?
Are you a new convert who wants a crash course on Biblical basics?
If the answer to any of these questions is yes, you might want to sign up for a twelve-week Bible class on how to study the Bible using 5W+H. This systematic approach to studying a Biblical text allows students to accurately determine the meaning of the text. The course will be offered on Wednesday nights during the upcoming Fall Quarter.
The purpose of this class is to introduce students to numerous tools to assist them in their study of the Bi-ble. The class focuses on the text by answering ques-tions like who, what, where, when, why, and how. We will use sound interpretive methods to analyze one passage each week. The class is limited to ten stu-dents and will involve short homework assignments, numerous handouts, serious class participation, and a robust class website. Students will need to bring a Bible, a pen, a notebook, and a sense of humor.
The class is appropriate for beginning and intermedi-ate Bible students of any age. Major additional topics include:
The Story of the Bible
• How We Got the Bible• Archaeology and the Bible
• How to Approach Contradictions• Biblical Languages• Prophecy and Apocalyptic Literature• Holy Land Geography• The Challenge of Translations• Inspiration and Authority• Alternative Methods of Study • Technology and the Bible• The Most Misunderstood Passages
This class is a fast-paced sur-vey of material important to any student of the Bible. We will only be able to in-troduce the numerous top-ics in a one-hour class each week so attendance each week is extremely impor-tant. The class is limited to
ten students so please let Joel know before Monday, August 31, if you are interested in this twelve-week class. Our first class will be at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, September 2, in room 1110 in the teen center (college classroom). The final class on Wednesday, November 18, will be a two-hour class with a shared meal start-ing at 6 p.m.
