Welcome to 2019! We pray that each of you had a joyful Christmas with family and friends!
Exams: January is an important month for our SH students as they head into ex-am season. It is very important that students are present to all classes, making use of their PIT time and seeking out teachers for extra help and support. Please log onto your child’s PowerSchool account and help cre-ate a plan for them to complete all missing assignments. You can also email your child’s teacher who will be happy to assist. All Diploma exams are mandatory. The date and time of the exam cannot be changed. In the case of an emergency, Mrs. Corcoran should be contacted ([email protected]). Students will be allowed to leave after exams on January 24th –January 30th. All other days students are expected to be in class. Accountability Survey: Over the next month parents and students in Gr. 4, 7 and 10 will be asked to complete an Accountability Survey from Alberta Education. The information from this survey allows Alberta Education and the school au-thority to ensure we are equipping students for success. The surveys are anonymous and are available in English and French. This year you will be able to answer through paper or online. We ask that you take the time to complete the survey from a whole year perspective. We also ask that if you do not understand or know about a question, please email or call us before answering “Don’t know.” We will be happy to have a conversation about the question. We want to thank everyone who helped make our Christmas Dinner a joyful event for students and teachers. We could not have done it without you! Happy New Year,
Mrs. Corcoran and
Mr. Redl

January Musical Notes Our Christmas Concert was a huge success. I am proud of all of our students. Thank you for everyone’s help and support.
Band students are reminded to practice nightly, even if it is only for 5-10 minutes. If your child's instrument re-quires a reed, please make sure they have spares in their case.
Choir will be starting up again on Monday,
January 14th. Anyone can join our Spring ses-
sion, even if they were not involved in the Fall
session. Students are expected to come every Monday we are in school to practice. We will be preparing music for the spring Music Festival.
The first Sunday of February is the 3rd and I will be look-ing for students to come and sing the Opening and Closing songs at Mass at Immaculate Conception Church here in Sexsmith at 11:00. Students do not need to be choir mem-bers to sing at Church, all are welcome! We will begin prac-ticing for this at our first choir rehearsal of the New Year, January 14th.

focus and start the day of right.
We will be walking for 10 minutes around the school. We will be walking in all types of weather. If the temperature drops below -
20 we will walk inside.
Please ensure that your child is dressed appropriately.

Tanis!
The month of December we were busy with sharing circles and having fun learning
about and making gingerbread tipis! For the month of January we will be focusing on
the sacred teaching of wisdom. According to the Abegweit First Nation the animal that
represents this teaching is the beaver because it utilizes its gifts in ways that promote
wellness for itself and its family. What a great reminder to all of us as we begin a new
year!
During cultural circle we will continue with sharing circles, and introduce new crafts
and learning activities based on wisdom.
Coffee and snacks are always available in my office for any FMNI high school students
who want to quickly stop by or hang out!
Any FNMI parents that need to contact me, please feel free to drop by for a coffee or
call me at the school. 780-568-3631

Ms. Jo-Ella and Ms. Huitt will be hosting an All About Me group here at St. Mary’s School from Mid January to March for girls in grade 4 to 8. If you are interested in nominating a child please let us know!
What is the purpose of the group?
There is no more confusing time in one’s life than being a kid. We hear so many mixed messages about how we should look, feel and behave. Mixed messages come from so many sources (media, parents, peers, clothing and fashion trends etc.) The intent of this group is to really have the girls develop a sense of “self”. One of the big-gest goals of this group is for the girls to model themselves after women they admire and respect, and develop the skills to “dare to be different”.
THE PRIMARY GOAL IS TO IMPROVE GIRL’S SELF ESTEEM.
Girls who feel good about themselves have the ability to not put others down but strive hard to lift each other up
It is all about “Girl Power”.
Teach the girls how to speak and listen to one another:
How to develop the skills to let things go.
Effective Communication, ( Learn to talk “to” one another verses “at” one another.)
Getting to know the real person, not what we see on the outside.
No more gossip or rumors and how to stop it when we hear it happen.
Personal ownership
There are six key components that the group will work on with these girls to achieve these goals.
They are:
I am a true gift (What is cool about me)
Identity (Who am I and I and what do I like)
Body Image (What do I love about me and how do I build on this)
Problem Solving (who can I turn to for help)
Communications (role playing, to approach relational aggression)
Putting it all together to be the best “Me”.
The group will be running at lunch hour on in room 319 in Monday/Thursday. We will be eating our lunches to-gether and enjoying many fun activities in and around the school. We together will develop a new culture for these girls to develop into powerful women leaders of tomorrow.
