E Embarking on a new year

is both exciting and challenging.

Many, if not every one of us, has

a desire to accomplish at least one

new goal this year, tackle some

unchartered territory or reach for the

elusive anew. Whatever they may

be, setting goals are advantageous,

good for the mind and the spirit.

Successfully undertaking any goal

for 21 days, someone has claimed,

we are supposed to never have

to face as a challenge thereafter.

Unfortunately, I am sure this is not

always true for I have managed to

conquer some things for 21 days,

and regretfully, have reneged after-

wards. But what do we do if we find

ourselves having gone back on our

word? Do not allow discouragement

to reside permanently; just pick it up

and try, try again – every time!

Speaking of new, you have to read

the Pastor’s Pen to find out our

church theme for 2011, and dis-

cover more of what is in store for us

during the year! What Shall We Be?,

this month’s Biblical Perspective, is

worth the read. You may also find

it helpful as you take on any new

challenges. Also, it is always great

to know what God is doing in the

lives of fellow members, so check

out Illuminations’ featured Calvary

member, Reverend Herman Scott.

Perhaps you will find encourage-

ment and strength to trust that God

also has a plan for you, and the

Trustees have provided some good,

sound advice to us, as always, as we

seek to do ministry more excellently.

Be sure to check out these stories

and all of the other information.

Look and expect great things from

God even when it gets increasingly

difficult to do so. God has a way

of giving us strength and courage

to face anything we truly give to

Him, knowing that our strength and

help comes from nowhere else but

Him. g

Happy reading,

CALVARY CONNECTION FEBRUARY 2011 5

You may be wonder-

ing… “Why in the world

– with all of the snow

and ice we have had

this winter – do we need

to do a book and Bible

study on icebergs?” Well,

we’re studying Our Ice-

berg Is Melting, an adult

fable by leadership and

change guru John Kotter,

to help us transition for

the better. This story of

how a colony of Emper-

or Penguins adapts to

change really opens our

theme for 2011: New

Wine, New Wineskins:

Transitioning for the Bet-

ter. In the fable, the pen-

guins discover the need

for change, identify what

has to be done, take the

necessary action and

adapt to their new way

of living.

Over the next several

weeks we will read and

study Our Iceberg Is

Melting along side the

Scriptural example of

how God called the chil-

dren of Israel to transition

out of bondage in Egypt

into a new life in the

Promised Land. Fables,

narratives and parables

are great teaching tools

because they show us

more than they tell us.

As we place ourselves

in the penguins’ context,

we may discover some

of our own thoughts and

feelings about change

actually…transitioning

for the better.

Whether we like it, or

not, change is an ines-

capable part of life on

earth. This is true for

individuals, organiza-

tions, families and even

nature. It’s especially

true for the Church in

the 21st Century. Statis-

tics show us that church

attendance decreases

with each new genera-

tion.

Among those born

before 1946, 51% of

the population attended

church

1946-1964 41%

1965-1976 34%

1977-1994 less than 30%

We are not embarking

upon this book & Bible

study on changing and

succeeding under any

condition and embrac-

ing a 2011 thematic

emphasis of New Wine,

New Wineskins: Transi-

tioning for the Better to

be trendy or trivial. We

are doing this so that

we can be courageous

enough to do what has

to be done to reach and

relate to this next gen-

eration.

We need not be alarmed

by the statistics. Christ

Himself planted the

Church and promised

that it would prevail

in an ever-changing

culture. In Matthew

9:17 Jesus tells us what

we need to do. Allow

me to paraphase what

I hear Him saying: “If

you’re going to reach

this next generation, you

will have to pour some

new wine. And, if you’re

going to pour new wine,

you have to use new

wineskins. If you pour

the new wine into the

old skin (that’s tradition

for tradition’s sake) the

skins will break and the

wine will be wasted.”

As we transition for the

sake of the kingdom’s

expansion, it may mean

that some of us will be

uncomfortable initially.

Yet, we will succeed

in accomplishing our

ultimate aim, which

is to glorify God by

making disciples of

Jesus Christ. g

By Minister David A. Hollowell

Have you wondered recently how the Mahalia Jackson fellowship Hall gets transformed so miraculously from event to event for the plethora of activi-ties on the church’s schedule? Or have you marveled that the walkways seem to always be shoveled and salted shortly after every snow storm? Or how the ambience is comfortable for worship, planning or practice no matter what day of the week or time of day it is? If you have, you can credit the CBC facilities staff for being on top of every situation that needs attention in the building and its surroundings. That capable and responsive staff includes Edward (Ed) Murphy, Facilities Manager, Dramone (Zeke) Pierce, Deacon Anthony Rod-gers, and Sammie Palmer.

As Bro. Murphy emphasizes, his team is committed to serving the con-gregation and the church’s ministries by ensuring that the infrastructure is in place to support church functions and events, as well as daily operations. A significant portion of the facilities staff time is devoted to managing setup for meetings, classes, conferences, and other activities. However, the scope

of their work stretches far beyond this responsibility. The facilities staff also contains within its purview many addi-tional duties, among which are:

• Overall upkeep of the church’s prop-erty, including the main building at 10 Martin Luther King Avenue, the Well-spring Center at 13 Martin Luther King Avenue, the Rowe Building, and a house on Mt. Airy Road, a block away from the church,

• Supervising contractors for lawn care and snow removal,

• Repair and renovation projects, such as painting, carpentry, plumbing, and general maintenance functions,

• Providing planning input to major projects that are put out to bid,

• Monitoring the work of external con-tractors,

• Crisis management, and

• Troubleshooting problems that may arise at the Pastor’s home.

As the facilities staff pursues its ongo-ing rigorous schedule, it is also oversee-ing modifications to the Rowe Building in 2011, preparing that facility (which

eventually be sold) for housing some of the programs run under the auspices of CBC’s Youth Ministries. Some of this work involves painting, shaving doors for a better fit, repairing a drop ceil-ing and replacing worn carpets. Bro. Murphy, in conjunction with the Trustee ministry, has attempted to keep as much of this work as possible in-house to keep costs down.

Calvary Baptist Church facilities are available to members, non-members, local community groups, and non-profit organizations whose beliefs and mis-sions are in line with those of the church. The facilities are not available for monetary gain, political gain, or fund raising. Ministries, individuals, or organizations desiring to reserve a class-room, the chapel, the fellowship hall, or the sanctuary for an approved meeting or event can obtain required forms and guidelines from the church office. As Bro. Murphy urges, “Use us when you need us. We are here for you.” Let’s applaud the facilities staff for its dedica-tion and professionalism. g

A NOTE FROM THE TRUSTEES

Dear Church Leaders:

The Trustees look forward to furthering the church’s Mission with you in 2011. We ask that you remain mindful of the following:

Know Your Budget – Before you spend the church’s money, know how much you have left in your budget to spend. Your specific budget may be adjusted throughout the year as the Pastor is led; you will be notified of any changes to your specific budget by e-mail. Do not exceed your budget. Be Good Stewards – Please avoid waste. Help the church save its money to use instead for the expan-sion of His kingdom. Don’t make more copies than you need. Please try to use front and back when you are copying and reduce the number of copies for the same announcement each week.Spend Wisely – If you’re going to spend over $1,000 at any one time, even though it has been approved and is in your budget, first consult with the Trustee assigned to your Ministry (see attached) before making the expenditure so the Trustees can ensure that the funds to cover the expense are in the church’s account at the correct time.

Eat Purposefully – Your budget for food should be spent for mission purposes, which are inclusive of outreach and “fellowship” endeavors. Please minimize the number of events which include meals.

Document Spending – Be sure to submit to the Finance Office, complete, signed vouchers and paid receipts for all expenses incurred.

Communicate – If more than one person leads your ministry, communicate spending intentions with one another and stay abreast of your ministry’s running budget total. When in doubt, consult with the Trustee assigned to your ministry.

Thank you and we look forward to working with you in His vineyard this year. Yours in Christ, The Trustees

P.S. NO FOOD OR DRINK IS PERMITTED IN THE SANCTUARY.

Reverend Herman ScottILLUMINATIONSSHINING A LIGHT ON CALVARY MEMBER

Reverend Herman ScottGOD’S FAVOR – A LEANING IN YOUR DIRECTIONIn October 2000, Pastor Carter asked if I would be interested in overseeing the Calvary Baptist Prison Ministry, which at that time had no ministerial leader. At that time, the mission of the ministry was to impact the Morristown com-munity.

Although I understood the assignment, I didn’t know how to get started. So, one Sunday, while serving communion at a member’s home, I was introduced to Diane Ritchie who later introduced me to, Elsie Davis, who was employed as the warden of the jail. Isn’t God good! She was able to assist me with obtaining access into the jail.

Our beginnings were quite humble, con-sisting of two classes - one for women and one for men. Collectively, there

were three students, one woman attend-ing the women’s class and two men in the men’s class. Since that time, the number of students and classes offered has increased greatly. I praise God for the expansion of students and classes now numbering 75 and 6, respectively.

Students and classes are not the only things that have changed over the years. Katherine Schwartz, who for eight years served in the role of chaplain, suddenly resigned, and the chaplaincy position was left vacant for the next nine months. The Morris County Chaplaincy Board sought, unsuccessfully, to fill the posi-tion. Countless resumes and conduct-ing numerous interviews garnered no suitable person for the role. Rich Kaller, the chairman of the board, and I had been discussing retirement timeframes at my fulltime job. I mentioned that I was considering retiring within three years, which then led to a discussion

of me possibly retiring early and taking the position as chaplain at the jail. Rich Kaller replied, “Whatever salary you need to retire, the board will make [you] that offer.” After 30 years, at PSE&G, I will officially retire on March 31, 2011.

December, 1, 2010, I officially became the full-time chaplain at the Morris County Correctional Facility. My duties are to correlate religious studies, offer counseling and provide spiritual ser-vices for the 330 inmates housed in the facility. Thus far, seven classes have been established: two are offered on Monday nights from 7:00pm until 9:30pm; Fri-day nights beginning at 7:15pm until 9:45pm and Saturdays from 1:00pm until 3:00pm. All classes run simultane-ously for women and men.

Our goal in 2011 is to provide spiri-tual knowledge of Jesus Christ and the impact and concern that goes along with that knowledge. g

“ Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be…” – John 3:2 (KJV)

Even though John was speaking of the grand unveiling of our celestial possibilities when Christ appears, we can take this scripture and apply it to our lives today as we move into the new year of 2011. Against the backdrop of a vision that Pastor Carter has drawn from his prayerful inquiries to the Lord in recent years, we as a congregation stand on the brink of allowing God to use Calvary in a special way. Though our plans have not all come to fruition, they are certainly in active development and in due time, will blossom into full display.

As we occupy, and tarry as the Lord forges our collective pathway, it is incumbent upon each of us to reach within ourselves to bring into the forefront the gifts and talents that He has endowed us with. 2011 can be the best year we have ever had, both corporately, as well as individually. As we have made the first exploratory steps into this glorious new year, let us now reflect upon our triumphs and trials during 2010, and to prepare ourselves for what God wants us to be in 2011.

Some of us may want to change some old habits, while others may use this time to plan our launch into new or revived initiatives: new interests, new ministries, more con-sistent visitation of the sick and shut-in, increased giving and support of missions, finally joining the choir, inten-

tionally spending more quality time with family, working harder and smarter, losing weight, and countless other items. But this year, let us resolve ourselves to action: to appropriate and actualize the possibilities that God has already placed within us. Let us not just make another round of weak resolu-tions, but instead, fashion a “made up mind” to be all that we can be. Just like beginning a diet, it is easy to make an initial vow of commitment, and to sustain a level of enthusiasm for a day, a week, or even a month or so. But achievement of success is inextricably tied to our attitudes and perspectives: Whatever we purpose in our hearts to accomplish in 2011 has to be not an occasional activity, but a commitment to a new lifestyle – empowered by God.

It is not easy to kick destructive or unproductive habits that we have been stuck with for years or decades. Nor is it easy to take on new challenges with new procedures, in a new environment. But if we baptize our efforts in prayer and enlist the help of God as our co-laborer, we can hope to become better contributors and over-comers. What shall you be in 2011? What shall we be in 2011? We will only be what our hearts and minds deem important, what our physical person works for, and what our spirits long and desire for. We may not know what we shall be, but we know that with the Lord’s help we can be what He wants us to be. g

“Now when they began to sing and to praise, the LORD set ambushes against the people… who had come against Judah; and they were defeated.” (2 Chronicles 20:22(NKJV)

From the bowels of slave ships during the Middle Passage to America’s southern plantations to the Underground Railroad to the Jim Crow era to the Civil Rights movement, singing has been the means of express-ing confidence, solidarity, defiance, strength, protest and victory. From the rhythm of the back-breaking moans of slaves laboring under heavy burdens, to the melodic call to the meeting place of escape, to the forceful sound of the marching beat – “ain’t gonna let nobody turn me ‘round,” congregational singing served to reaffirm, ener-gize and empower.

Calvary’s Music Ministry, in collaboration with the Golden Years Ministry, has planned a musical extravaganza to commemorate the powerful place singing had in the black experience as we strove to achieve freedom and equality. To celebrate Black History Month, on Saturday, February 26 at 12PM, the Harlem Jubilee Singers, directed by Dr. Gregory Hopkins will present a history of gospel music.

Founded in 1982, The Harlem Jubilee Singers was born out of the Convent Avenue Baptist Church in Harlem, NY. Under Dr. Hopkins direction, the group has performed at Carnegie Hall, Jacob Javits Center, and the Schomberg Center to name a few. Dr. Gregory Hopkins, himself an operatic tenor, has been touring Latin America with the group for the past 10 years. They also have invitations to perform in Italy and France.

Please join us as we trace this historical thread of song along the road to freedom with the renowned Harlem Jubilee Singers refreshing our souls and our bodies at the 14th annual Black Heritage Luncheon – HOW I GOT OVER Saturday, February 26th.
