The Challenges

The Anguilla Statistics Department (ASD) operates within a system where the appreciation and power of data is in it embryonic stage and attention to coordination and collaboration is not the central focus.

“Sound Statistics for Sustainable Development”Anguilla Statistics Department

1 •Inconsistency in content across the various ministries.

2 •Inaccessibility of data simply because data was held in hard copy in files.

3 •Duplication of effort in the collection of data. Increase cost of resources (human, financial and XXX)

4 •An inability to clarify data or answer queries of national, regional, international agencies.

Page 7: STRENGTHENING STATISTICS IN A SMALL ISLAND STATE

Our focus then was ………..

The Anguilla Statistics Department is tasked with the mandate, as set out in Section 2 of the Anguilla Statistics Act:

Our Strategy

Designing and implementing National Strategy for the Development of Statistics (NSDS) and to nationally own it.

A NSDS is an overall national vision for the development of a country’s statistical system which will include the national regional and international needs.

The NSDS will seek to provide a vision for where the NSS should be in five to ten years and will set milestones for getting there.

Data a Strategic Resource

In many companies, data is not considered a strategic resource. In these companies it has played a secondary role to products and services, and the processes and systems utilized for data collection are not linked.

The Results?

Page 21: STRENGTHENING STATISTICS IN A SMALL ISLAND STATE

Data Costs

• The Data Warehousing Institute estimates that data quality problems cost U.S. businesses more than $600 billion a year.

• Yet, most executives/officials are oblivious to the data quality lacerations that are slowly bleeding their companies/government to death.

• More injurious than the unnecessary printing, postage, and staffing costs is the slow but steady erosion of an organization’s credibility among customers and suppliers/stakeholders, as well as its inability to make sound decisions based on accurate information.
