Phase ISpring 2013

The WaysEdmonton is a city of design - urban design, architectural design, and environmental design. Walk its safe, leafy neighbourhoods, ride its efficient and accessible transportation system. The city has grown up; now we’re building smarter.

The City of Edmonton’s Urban Design Unit, Sustainable Development, would like to continue the discussion with the community and all those stakeholders who are interested in McCauley’s future. As part of the McCauley revitalization, the aim of these projects is to enhance walkability, connectivity and public realm through physical improvement which may include roadway redesign, decorative street lights, tree planting and street furniture. The projects include streetscape improvement on 106 Ave (97 St - 101 St), 107A Ave (95 St - 97 St) and some enhancements in China-town (97 St) and Little Italy (95 St.). The City of Edmonton’s Urban Design Unit, Sustainable Development is preparing concept plans and would like feedback from the community and all stakeholders in order to proceed to the design phases.

Current Conditions

Our Design Intent

● Improve the pedestrian character of 106 Avenue between 101 St. and 97 St. and encourage pedestrian traffic as an entry to Chinatown ● To create a more vibrant and “pedestrian-friendly” commercial street● Encourage the development of vacant lands● Improve the pedestrian environment of the street (i.e. more trees and amenities)● Consider traffic calming measures (i.e. narrower lanes, curb extensions and if possible a round about) and support the adjacent uses (i.e. cultural development to the south)


● Realign the street; define traffic lanes and intersections● Retain on-street parallel parking● Widen sidewalks● Plant street trees where space allows● Replace road and pedestrian light fixtures using cultural themed poles

● Busy arterial road● 4 through lanes + a left-turn lane (at 97 St. and 95 St.)● Narrow curbside sidewalks ● No street trees ● Street is perceived more as “car-friendly” and less “pedestran-friendly”● Lack of connectivity between 97 St. (Chinatown) and 95 St. (Little Italy)● The existing street lighting is road oriented only

● Help to create a more vibrant and “pedestrian-friendly” streetscape to be a better connection between 97 St. (Chinatown) and 95 St. (Little Italy) ● 107A Avenue will remain an arterial road with an improved pedestrian environment

● Retain 4 through lanes + a left-turn lane (at 97 St. and 95 St.)● Remove the 2m wide median to facilitate widening of each sidewalk ● Suggest 1.5m additional setback for new developments along 107A Ave● Plant street trees where space allows● Replace road lighting and add pedestrian lighting
