Once upon a time Mattancherywas a busy trade center inKerala. Pepper, turmeric andother variety o spices weremerchandised rom here. Gloryo this place begin to vanish,

when the mearchents started to shif to Ernakulamafer they had troubles with porters.

Kaleidoscopic blend o cultures is a specialityo Mattanchery. People rom Goa, amil Nadu,Gujarat and many other places in India hadcome and settled here. Migrants rom differentcommunities such as Jews, Konkanis, Marwariesand Muslims rom Kutch added colours andsmells to the ancient streets o Mattanchery. ime

has taken it’s toll on demographic, cultural andarchitectural diversity o this migrant town, still wecan see oot prints o history on her streets.

Tere are many tourist attractions in this place.Teoldest Synagogue in the Commonwealth o Nationsis located here, also there is a dutch palace, Jaintemple and many other places o interests.

Migrants are seen as big problems presenttimes. International politics call

challenge when dealing with reuge crisis.

In this context the history o Mattanchery has got a

significance, where the ruler itsel welcomed the initial

migrants and helped them to settle down in to the main

streams o the society.

which is located thousands o kilometres away rom their

place o origin, is o course a great symbol o tolerance.
