The photographs you see here, and in the exhibition you found this catalogue at, were all made by young people using disposable cameras. Even though the equipment was cheap and time was tight, they’ve managed to create a lot of very beautiful, original images. From professional looking architectural shots to experimental montages, the work in this show’s a real mixture of creative talents and experiments. Streetlight was an eight week photography course for young, unemployed people. It was designed to enhanceself-confidence, presentation and communication through the process of producing, presenting and promoting an exhibition. Meet the Team

Steve BomfordThis part of NeBMedia has a wealth of experience in commercial photography and often produces exhibitions for The Empty Shops Network. As with previous photography courses he’s taught on, Streetlight has been a refreshing delight, confirming his suspicion that “absolutely everyone is, or can be, really creative”. He says that he’s genuinely excited by the potential shown by the budding photographers we’ve been working with here.

Apart from photography, he’s dead in to social media and bees. He describes himself as “handsome and available”.

Jan’s a Merseyside immigrant who’s exhibited her drawings, collages and photographs extensively in the UK and abroad. She set up a mobile exhibition venue and art project called The Caravan Gallery in 2000, with a chap called Chris Teasdale. Their mission is to create an archive recording the ordinary and extraordinary details of everyday life in our Britain and beyond.

The Caravan Gallery has travelled thousands of miles creating place-specific temporary exhibitions all over the place. Whether they’re outside Tate Britain or in the middle of a shopping centre, visitors to The Caravan really engage with the project and furnish it with their own anecdotes and memories.

Jan has a studio at Art Space Portsmouth and enjoys sharing her creative/warped ideas with others through her exhibitions, workshops and publications.

“Never leave the house without a camera in case you bump into an Afghan hound in a shell suit”.

Daniel’s a young upstart from Devon who’s been making a real nuisance of himself since he arrived in Portsmouth. He’s curated all sorts of shows, from open photography competitions in cafes, to degree shows in cathedrals. While most of his work is with other people’s photography, he does maintain a modest commercial practice in the area. He works with Steve at NeBMedia, where he’s in charge of

writing (or “getting things done”, as he’d have it). He’s very passionate about Portsmouth’s rich creative scene.

Apart from all that, he’s a mean cook, pretends that he knows about wine and has a pocket watch.

Meet the Gang

Lydia Alexander

Although she was born in colourful Camden Town, Lydia spent almost half of her life in Italy where she developed a passion for art & beauty. Since her return to England she has discovered a real talent and enthusiasm for photography.

She joined Streetlight to further explore the medium and she’s found that the challenges of using disposable cameras have really helped her develop as a photographer. Her beautiful images of commonplace objects and scenes display a very personal way of looking, of finding the extraordinary in the everyday.

Lynda BerryThis proactive character joined Streetlight to explore photography and her creativity further. She’s found the course a useful complement to her interest in writing and journalism, even though it was “hard work”. Travelling around the city with her bicycle and several of our disposable cameras, she created a quirky and playful snapshot of Portsmouth. Lynda has a degree in History & English and enjoys writing poetry. She regularly attends and reviews the writing events held by local club, Tongues and Grooves.

Matt Callus

After joining the course because he was “free on Tuesdays”, Matt discovered that he had a hidden flair for photography (despite some initial finger-in-front-of-the-lens teething problems). He’s found Streetlight to be an interesting challenge as it’s been the first time he’s ever really used a camera in anger. His striking ‘joiners’ show a bold and experimental approach. Even though he found the process of editing a set of images down to a coherent series difficult, his photographs of the current World Cup mania are a very concise documentary.

Outside the course, he’s learning to speak Chinese at a rate of knots. He’s recently taken up a volunteer position as a Chinese-speaking Teacher’s Assistant at a local school.

Isaac Cohen

This Portsmouth thoroughbred happened across an advert for the course and thought it might be something “a bit different and fun”. He’s since revised that to “different and difficult” – like the others, he found the process of editing challenging at the beginning. Before the course he’d never had a real interest in photography, but now he’s intending to get his hands on “something a bit better than a Kodak disposable”. His photographs explore perspective and vanishing points.

Isaac has a degree in English Literature and enjoys acoustic guitar.
