Victoria Spring 2014 Lately, we have received an influx of donations in the form of clothing – jackets, socks, gloves, hats, underwear. All has been appreciated. The other eve- ning, we had a large num- ber of people come into the RV in the first hour or so that we were there. It kept the four volun- teers busy; serving soup, making sandwiches, pass- ing out bananas... However, later on, it slowed down a little, and someone came into the RV who had never been there before. After finishing off his soup and sand- wiches, we talked. At some point he asked if we had a baseball hat. We didn’t have a baseball hat for him; we had three that he could choose from. That led to a bit of a dilemma, as he now had a choice. After that, there was a request for socks, which we had... and then a warm work shirt. I just kept going. It was a joy to be able to say “yes” to each of his requests. How often do the people who visit us hear “no” on the street? Often. And so, as much as we can, we like to say “yes” to them; to affirm them and support them. You have provided us with so much so that we can say “yes.” At one point, this visitor asked us where everything came from; we could tell him about you and your faithful support. For more info visit: www.streethope.ca Tangible Items Are An Expression Of Love Jonathan Hi my name is Jonathan. I have been involved with Street Hope for about a year. In the past I had often thought about volunteering with a program such as Street Hope but the business of life always seemed to take priority; it seemed to cloud over what is truly important in life. Life is unpredictable as we all know. Some of the most important things in my life have re- cently been taken away from me. One of the outcomes has been to be aware of what I do have; what God has given me and to be grateful. It has rekindled a desire in me to serve others out of my own pain and vulner- ability. It seems that we are still usable by Christ even in that state! Occasionally I arrive at the RV on Tuesday eve- nings, after a long day of work, wondering if I really want to be there. As I make my way back home at the end of the evening, after much laughter and conversa- tion, I feel lifted in my spirit and I wonder ‘who gave to who?’ I come to serve but in the end I feel served -- by my fellow volunteers and by the many amazing folks who come to hang, eat and chat in our slightly rustic but welcoming RV.
