Street Art and Public Space: A Digital Archive Georgios Stampoulidis (georgios.stampoulidis@semio=k.lu.se) Centre for Cogni=ve Semio=cs, Lund University, Sweden Herrenhausen Conference: Society through the Lens of the Digital, May 31-June 2, 2017 Background v Street art is a new form of art and ac0vism of uncomissioned and unsanc0oned ar0facts. v Street art includes pain0ngs, murals and various kinds of stencils, posters, and s0ckers applied in any public surface. v Street art is not synonymous with graffi0 (Lewisohn 2008). v Street art is a sociocultural prac0ce (Bengtsen 2014). v Street art is performa0ve, ephemeral, and site specific based on geographical space and sociocultural context (Bengtsen 2014; MacDowall 2008) . v Public space is crea0ve, communica0ve, and changeable. v The street artworks create public dialogue. v Crea0ng a corpus of street art pictures with rhetorical devia0on (conven0on, selec0on, arNulness). v Developing new theories and methodologies from a cogni0ve semio0c angle. v Building up an explicit and reliable taxonomy of mul0modal verbopictorial rhetoric on street art. v Construc0ng a georeferen0al online digital archive for gathering, analyzing and visualizing data with the implementa0on of GIS (Geographical Informa0on System) technique. Conclusions References Discussion v This pilot study may lead to alterna0ve interpreta0ons of the mul0modal verbopictorial genre of street art, and thus to a poten0al re- evalua0on of the datasets. v Open and changeable database. v Subjec0vity issue is a weakness; the interpreta0ons are strongly dependent on personal intui0ons emerged from the observa0on of the picture. v Inter-coding process and agreement could be reliability equivalent. v More datasets may be in the process of expansion or change. v The datasets will be publicly available and downloadable, including func0ons for downloading XML and JSON files. v Street art is site specific, loca0onal oriented. v Verbal and pictorial integra0on based on various semio0c modali0es is a visual tes0mony, in order to establish a spiritual bridge with the Greek society. v The interpreta0on of street art requires shared sociocultural pragma0c knowledge – Lifeworld. v The sociocultural and poli0cal changes give birth to a wave of popular sociopoli0cal wall commentary. v Redefined signs and symbols, intertextual references, and culturally related subjects reconstruct the current Athenian public landscape. v Complex mul0modal verbopictorial nature of street art.
