COVID Update As indicated in our first newsletter of the term, there have been no further easing or tightening of any restrictions on schools since last term. Parents are able to come onto the school grounds to support pick up and drop off of students, but not able to enter classrooms. Parents are reminded that if students are ill that they should remain home until well enough to return to school, and to seek medical advice if there are any Covid- 19 symptoms. Parents are asked to ensure they are social distancing during the drop off and pick up times at the beginning and end of the school day. We thank our parents for their ongoing support and understanding during these difficult times. Planned camps and excursions are continuing, we are currently working out a process to conduct Parent/Teacher interviews at the end of the term within the current COVID restrictions. Maths Methods, Speciality Maths, Essential Maths, Chemistry, Physics, Biology and Psychology through Local Delivery - a combination of online lessons via Mircosoft Teams and regular visits to the school by their Local Delivery Teacher who teaches out of their base school on Eyre Peninsula. Students from across Eyre Peninsula schools are combined together to create a ‘virtual’ class which is taught via Local Delivery. Students had the opportunity to meet with the Local Delivery teachers and other Year 10 students interested in accessing these subjects next year to find out more about the topics covered and what it is like to study via Local Delivery. Many thanks to Jaykie Bull, who currently teaches Local Delivery Essential Maths, for supporting this day. Governing Council Governing Council met on Monday night and spent time discussing the options around the school speed zone and traffic controls, there will be further consultation with the District Council, Streaky Bay Road Safety Group and SAPOL on this matter. Governing Council will be working towards reviewing the school’s Uniform and ICT/Mobile Phone policies which are due for review this year. Nominations for the Rowan Ramsey Community Education Award and the Governing Council vacancy which has not been filled, are further in the newsletter.

2020 Regional Netball Carnival

How lucky were we to get the chance to travel to Whyalla to participate in the annual Far North Eyre Peninsula Regional Netball Carnival? 2020 has not exactly been a ‘normal’ year, however, it really was great to get away

together on Tuesday the 4 August, for the girls to play Netball together with their classmates. We entered two Year 8/9 teams, consisting of a combination of Year 8 and 9 girls. The girls in the SBAS Gold team were Jada Frick, Chloe Evans, Ava Brace, Izzy Hunt, Samantha Cash, Ruby Launer, Ellie Guidera and Jessica Geraeds. These girls were coached by Sarah Brougham and umpired by Nyssa Bell. The gold team won 1 out of their 3 minor round games falling to Caritas 1 by 17 goals, Whyalla 1 by 20 goals and won the third against Samaritan 1 by 6 goals.

These girls had to play the Samaritan 1 team again in their semi-final and won to end up third in their pool. It took a few games to find the right combinations and get use to how each other played, but overall they had lots of fun. The Blue team consisted of Abbee Cash, Mia Whitford, Summer Braz, Alex Guidera, Kaelin Haimes, Amy Lynch, Hanah Chynoweth and Macy Trezona. This team was coached by Toni Foster and umpired by Rebelle Richardson. These girls played Caritas 2 first up and won 41 – 1. They then backed this up by defeating Whyalla 2, 22-8 and Samaritan 2, 22-15. Unfortunately, they lost their final, however, ended up second overall in their pool. The girls weren’t too discouraged as this meant they had time to call in to Maccas and KFC for a quick lunch break, before the long drive home. I would like to sincerely thank Toni Foster and Sarah Brougham for their support on the day and willingness to drive the bus. Also, a huge shout out to our awesome parent volunteer Rebelle Richardson for

coming along to umpire all day.

YEAR 10 HASS-Geographies of Human Wellbeing: A diverse and connected world

How do we measure wellbeing?

What is the link between population and wellbeing?

Does wealth equal wellbeing?

In recent weeks Year 10 students have been studying the Australian Curriculum area of Geographies of Human Wellbeing. As part of their studies they have learned to understand such widely used economic terms such as GDP, GDP per capita and GNI, and how these impact on human wellbeing. Aside from these economic indicators, the class examined how other quantitative indicators such as life expectancy and average education level also play an important role in determining human wellbeing—as in the United Nations Human Development Index. In less developed countries factors adversely influencing human wellbeing, such as urbanisation, extreme poverty and the lack of suitable sanitation, have been looked at. Students have also been able to appreciate how countries’ populations and fertility rates can affect wellbeing. They have come across some interesting official figures relating to various countries’ current as well as projected populations, and discovered that India is set to soon overtake China as the world’s most populous nation. By the end of their study of this interesting topic, it is hoped that students will have developed an appreciation of how fortunate we are to be living in the ‘lucky country’ of Australia as regards to general wellbeing, as well as an awareness of how the situation is in other less fortunate countries.

SENIOR SCHOOL NEWS SHAPING EDUCATION SO THAT STUDENTS THRIVE That’s what our students are entitled to, more than ever, in this uncertain world. During the next three years, the SACE Board is on a transformation journey that puts students, as 'thriving learners', at the centre of our work, with the release of our new Strategic Plan 2020 - 2023. This year continues to be incredibly challenging for schools and students, but these events also reaffirm the need now, more than ever, to challenge the way we prepare students for the future. Yesterday the SACE Board released the new Strategic Plan, Leading Educational Change and Student Transformation, for 2020-2023.

SACE The South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE) is the culmination of years of schooling for young people. In the global context of 2020 and beyond, students are entitled to much more than a checklist of knowledge, skills and values so that individuals can successfully take part in civic life. That’s why the Strategic Plan is an aspirational vision of leading educational change and student transformation. It’s a vision that goes beyond our role of assessing knowledge, skills and cognitive abilities to bringing the whole student into focus – their sense of belonging and connection to the world around them, their personal spirit, and their achievements - in essence, their ability to thrive. The purpose of the framework The SACE Board has a significant role in influencing the nature of education and are committed to working in partnership with schools and teachers in an environment of high trust and professionalism … they are shaping education. Through this Strategic Plan, they are decisively reframing education so that the ability to prosper and flourish now and in the future is the intentional outcome of a SACE education … so that students thrive. At the heart of the Strategic Plan is a promise to every student that they will finish their school experience with evidence of their own unique ability to thrive. Drawing on research, six elements characterise what it is that students are entitled to learn in order to thrive. They are: lifelong learning, connectedness, agency, belonging, deep understanding and skilful action as well as the ability to transfer learning. Thrive will be enacted through three strategic priorities: Bold Leader, Connected Qualification and Thriving Learner.

The senior school staff look forward to learning more about the new framework and implementing it into our school Kind regards,

Karen Box Senior School Coordinator

CHANGE TO OVERDUE NOTICES

Dear Parents,

The library is currently working on updating our overdue notice systems to keep in line with the rest of the Libraries SA consortium. As well as reminding our students about overdue books, we will also send parents/carers emails to show when an item is due to be returned soon, and when it’s overdue. Finally, after being overdue for 28 days, a bill will be emailed to parents.

This is a new system, but hopefully will be seen as a tool to assist students and families to keep track of the items they borrow from the library. While we prepare for this new system, students may be given a blue card detailing their current overdue items, encouraging them to return items to the library. I will keep parents, carers and students up to date with progress as we roll out the new system. If you have any questions, please contact me at the library.

The library is open to community users Tuesdays and Thursdays 4.30 – 6.30 pm for browsing and borrowing only. If you are unable to attend during these hours, please call to make other arrangements. P 86261492
