JACKIE EVANCHOArtist Spotlight

At the age of 14, she’s an actress, a model, and, above all else, a singer. Jackie Evancho may be young, but her list of achievements is as lofty and clear as the notes she reached as an unknown Pittsburgh preteen on America’s Got Talent.

Few teenagers can say they’ve ruled the stage at the Music Center at Strathmore—but then Evancho has always been special. Ever since that day in a darkened theater when the music of The Phantom of the Opera grabbed hold of her heart and soul, Evancho’s been moving closer to a dream of creative expression few of us will ever know.

What we do know is that a talent like Evancho’s is a true treasure. Here are five fun facts we absolutely adore about the little girl with the voice of an angel who’s growing gracefully into superstardom.

JACKIE EVANCHOSat, Oct 10, 2015, 8pmMUSIC CENTER

Evancho is widely known as the world’s youngest opera singer and was the youngest performer to enter the Billboard charts at No. 1. In addition to being a gifted soprano, she also plays violin and piano.

When she made her New York City solo concert debut in November 2011, Evancho became the youngest person ever to sing a solo concert at Lincoln Center.

Evancho’s new album, Awakening, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Classical Albums chart.

Known for her philanthropy, Evancho does more than just sing at benefit concerts: in 2013 at the One Night for One Drop of World Water Day, she even joined Cirque du Soleil for the grand finale, flying in as an angel on a harness from the theater rooftop.

No diva here: In 2011 Evancho was named by the National League of Junior Cotillions as one of the Ten Best-Mannered People. Her specialty? “Demonstrating humility and politeness as a young performer.”

“Anything I can do with my voice

that’s good, I’ll try to do.”

— Jackie Evancho

Where a la CarteMeets Performing Art

How do you amp up an evening out? Find a hot act in a cool new venue. Add a bar with carefully crafted cocktails, a discriminating wine list, and a menu that ranges from simple to sophisticated. And keep the music flowing.

“Genre-wise we want to do a lot of different things,” says Sam Brumbaugh, who as Strathmore’s new director of Programming is responsible for booking the venue. “It’s like this big jigsaw puzzle, booking a club–every weekend is different, and some nights we’ll take the tables out so people can dance. The area is blowing up, and we want to be eclectic.”

Brumbaugh insists “it’s not a supper club.” But in some ways AMP—down the road from Strathmore in the new Pike & Rose development—is a throwback to the days of swank, sophisticated bôites with fresh and fabulous music and food. It’s the venue of the moment through its balance of unique entertainment and innovative cuisine.

Michael Babin, Neighborhood Restaurant Group’s (NRG’s) award-winning chef and AMP’s menu mastermind, “has opened 23 restaurants,” says Brumbaugh. “He’s adaptable to every room, and our

goal here is for the food to be a central part of the experience at AMP.”

Babin’s collaborator—DC chef Jenn Crovato of NRG’s 550 Events and Provisions—explains: “People are expecting more now when they go out for an evening. In the past you’d pick one venue—the theater or a restaurant—and you’d settle for concessions at a concert. At AMP, we’re offering so much more.”

Crovato says the menu at AMP will reflect the entertainment on the stage. Diners can choose individual entrees or share small plates, paninis, and flatbreads. “A lot of what we serve will be based on the crowd,” says Crovato who, with Brumbaugh and Babin, will create smart, seasonal menus to showcase the best local ingredients and celebrate the artistry onstage. “The performance dictates the menu.”

Is Crovato up for the challenge of creating a menu of such distinction that it competes with some of the hot headliners Brumbaugh’s got lined up? She seems confident. “It’s not that I don’t want people to go to AMP for the performances—I do!” she says with a laugh. “But I hope that people come for the food too.”

CELEBRATE SPRING WITH THE NATIONAL PHILHARMONIC! The National Philharmonic kicks off its spring season with pianist Haochen Zhang, Gold Medal winner of the 2009 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, playing the “Mount Everest” of piano concertos—the Rachmaninoff Concerto No. 3, on Saturday and Sunday, March 28 and 29. This special evening, under the direction of Music Director and Conductor Piotr Gajewski, also features Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet Overture-Fantasy, in which doomed love resonates deeply as Shakespeare’s tragedy and the composer’s tortured personal life collide in this dramatic masterpiece.

On Saturday, April 11, outstanding vocalists Rosa Lamoreaux and Magdalena Wór are showcased in Bach’s St. John Passion, which remains one of the most deeply affecting and riveting masterworks in this genre. Christopher Taylor joins the Philharmonic on Saturday and Sunday, May 2 and 3, to play Mozart’s moving Piano Concerto No. 21. The concert also features Mozart’s last symphony, the powerful No. 41 (Jupiter), an optimistic, triumphant, and deservedly popular work.

The 2014–2015 season concludes Saturday, May 30, with Fauré’s famous Requiem and Brahms’ masterpiece, the Serenade No. 2. Always an audience favorite, the Serenade is one of the composer’s first orchestral works, written before he moved on to large symphonies and concertos.
