4. Educational Programs Enhance UNMC’s educational programs as the most highly learning centered university in health professions education.

Goal 1Implement the Interprofessional Experiential Center for Enduring Learning (i-Excel) innovative educational models that embrace new and evolving technologies for student interactive learning including blended learning, advanced simulation and virtual immersive reality, online education, and formal partnerships with advanced technology and multi-media public organization and private companies.

Narrative description : We received an award to test the Remote Interventions Improving Specialty Complex Care (RIISCC) model, which aims to employ remote patient monitoring for 90 days post-discharge by utilizing telehealth consultations for participants at one of two community health centers located within the target geographic areas. Participants receive telehealth equipment as well as an orientation to the program which includes 90 day remote monitoring, weekly calls from remote monitoring coaches to discuss critical values and provide education and coaching, a retinal eye imaging scan and follow up consults with an ophthalmologist if needed, a nutritional consult with a registered dietician, and gift card incentives to encourage participation and retention. The target population resides in medically underserved areas and often experience barriers in access to health care.

UNMC College of Public Health - 11.6.1 Cancer Prevention and Control Narrative description : The COPH will develop and promote innovations that effectively prevent and monitor cancer. To attain National Cancer Institute designation as a comprehensive cancer center, the Fred and Pamela Buffett Cancer Center must have a robust program in cancer prevention and population science. The program must have at least five peer reviewed and federally (NIH) funded research projects from a minimum of three principal investigators. Successful programs substantially exceed this minimum.
