NURSERY—with Ms Devi

This will be my final newslet-ter for the 2 0 1 7 / 2 0 1 8 academic year, although it is

the penulti-mate edition of

the newsletter. I wanted to dedicate this entry to celebrating our year at SIS as we have enjoyed:

-Increased participation in our Parent/

Teacher support group leading to an

increase in events for the school com-

munity to enjoy such as Halloween and

Christmas disco, International Day and

-the Art Exhibition

-Introduction of Study skills workshops

from Singapore for students

-Improved grading system for students

to ensure progress is evident

-Participated in the Model United Na-

tions, History Bowl and Bee, the World

Scholars Cup group, Kangaroo Maths

and SASMO Maths competitions

-Participated in the Penang Music Festi-

val

-Participated in many sporting fixtures

with other international schools on the

island

-Many inter-house sporting events were

held

-School events such as Book Week,

Mothers’ and Fathers’ day event, Teach-

ers Day and Pi Day were a great success

-First Year 11 work experience pro-

gramme

-An amazing School Production

-A debating and public speaking event

will be hosted at Penang SIS in July

-First whole school Art exhibition, Pri-

mary Science fair and Dragons Den

event

-New more specific approach to Teach-

ers’ Professional development which

has been praised

-Excellent academic results, particularly

in Checkpoint exams

Next year, we are looking forward to

becoming a Google classroom school, as

students start at school with such an

expansive technical knowledge, we want

to continue developing their skills while

still remaining focused on the tradition-

al skills of reading books and writing.

We have exciting Challenge Week loca-

tions that our students are looking for-

ward to taking part in and an increase

in our co-curricular activities as our

school continues to grow; along with the

introduction of our new Afterschool

Club.

We are looking forward to enjoying the

end of the year and next year starting!

A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRINCIPAL, Ms Karlie Walsh

This week in Literacy students learnt the formation and the phon-ics sound of the letter ‘z’. Students were given hands-on activities to learn the formation of the letter. Using the Ants on the Apple and Jolly Phonics series, students learnt the rhyme for the letter Zz. They did a zoo craft by themselves to en-hance their learning about letter Zz.

For Numeracy, they continued to learn about simple subtrac-tion through “Five Little Monkeys” and “Five Little Duck-lings” songs.

In Understanding the World, the students were taught about parts of a car and they were brought to our school car park to see a car. They were given a chance to experience and touch different parts of a car starting from the front view, side-view and back view. They were happy as they created a car craft by themselves.

In Art the students created a Father’s Day craft which was a Google Card for their daddy. They even made a zucchini and cucumber print painting on a piece of art paper.

Lastly, “a,b,c,d,e,f,g,h,I,j,k,l,m,n,o,p,q,r,s,t,u,v,w,x,y, and z”, Nursery students were happy as they finished learning all the 26 alphabets and mastering the phonics sounds of each alphabet.

Putting on a school production is never easy as there are so many different parts that need to come together. The

songs, the script, the dance routines, not to mention the costumes and microphones. This year, however, has been

the most successful yet. The cast and crew have worked tirelessly, giving up their own free time after schools and

weekends (even over the Raya weekend!) to put together the show. For some people, it’s their fourth show here at

SIS (me included) and for others it’s their first. However experienced the cast have been, they have all shown in-

credible commitment and tenacity. We must thank the parents as well for their support towards the show. All the

crew members are proud of each and every member of cast. Thank you and well done everyone. Go Wildcats!

Early Years Foundation Stage

The EYFS team had their Fathers’ Day Celebration on 19th June 2018. On this day the little ones paired up with their daddies to participate in sports activities. Our celebration started off with Mr Chris’s speech and song presentation by the students.

Then, all fathers had a warm up with their child in the hall. It was indeed a good activity as all the fathers were doing sports with their child happily. There was also newspaper dance where the father and child had to dance on a newspaper as the newspaper got smaller and smaller when the songs stopped.

As the FIFA World Cup continues in Russia, the EYFS team organised a football match for the fathers and children. They also got the opportunity to show their love towards their father through a video presentation. The students also prepared little surprises for their dads in the form of greeting cards, thumb print water bottles and gifts. The kids eagerly participated in the activities and did their best to show how much they love their father and what he means to them.

We would like to thank all the parents who took time off and participated in our EYFS Fathers’ Day Celebration. We would like to thank Ms Yoges, for capturing wonderful moments.

Key Stage 1

On Friday 22nd June, Key Stage 1 had their annual Father’s Day celebration. The children were all very excited to show their fathers just how much they mean to them. It was a lovely afternoon filled with performances, gifts and CAKE!

We started with Year 1 and Year 2 doing some performances on the stages to songs that told their dads how much they loved them and how happy they were that they came to the school to celebrate the special day with us. The song ‘Daddy Cool’ was very appropriate. After the performances, the children, parents and teachers had the chance to chat and eat cake together.

Then, to end the afternoon, we all went back to the classrooms for some activities. Year 1 interviewed their dads and found out a lot of exciting things about them while Year 2 made a very tricky origami rocket. We are all very thankful to our parents for coming to our celebration!

Hari Raya Aidilfitri or Eid al Fitr is a religious festival celebrated by Muslims all around the world after a month of holy fast-

ing in Ramadhan. This year the occasion fell on the 15th of June. To commemorate the festival, Straits International School

hosted a joyous Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration during our weekly assembly on the 22nd of June. The event was steered

smoothly by MCs, Amira and Nicholas from Year 6.

On the day of the celebration, all teachers, students and even some parents were dressed to the nines in the theme colour,

green and in their traditional outfits.

The celebration kicked off with a traditional ‘bunga manggar’ parade accompanied by an upbeat ‘kompang’ tune. The ladies

in the parade were decked beautifully in resplendent Malay attire ‘kebaya’ and ‘baju kurung’ while the gentlemen were dash-

ing in their ‘baju melayu’ and ‘songket’ woven ‘sampin’. The parade was certainly a crowd favourite judging by the amount of

cheers and applause it received!!

The assembly continued with a dance fusion routine by Year 9 girls. The audience was absolutely mesmerised by the perfor-

mance. Next, SIS’s own talented star, Jemerine swayed the crowd with a soulful rendition of ‘Nirmala’ a Hari Raya song. As a

sweet ending to the festive mood, the Year 7s presented a catchy dance performance that left the crowd in awe.

Amazingly Straits International School had six students represented at the Global Round of the World Scholars Cup after qualifying in style from the Penang regional round. Jing Xuan, Shiwaanee, Jenny, Javier, Yenjoe and Kassandra travelled to Kuala Lumpur, where more than 5,000 scholars from over 50 countries competed. Our students experienced scavenger hunts, keynote speeches, panel discussions, our signature cultural

fair, the Scholar’s Ball, and, of course, all the competitive and community-building events such as the Debate Showcase to the Scholar’s Bowl. Every participant walked away with new friends, new discoveries, and very large alpacas! These kind of events vastly improve students’ education, pushing them educationally in new and exciting ways as well as helping them develop socially. It also connects them with many of the top students internationally expanding their learning support network. We have to give an amazing ‘thank you’ to all our students’ parents who chaperoned them and guided them through this event - it could not have run without them. We are awaiting the official results which we will be shared when we receive them but we know already that they did amazingly well, even qualifying for the grand finale at Yale. This is an amazing result for our students and our school!

WORLD SCHOLA R ’S CUP –by Mr Chr i s , V i ce Pr inc i pa l

On the 25th of June, the Round Square team had their assembly on the theme of ‘SERVICE’. It was a great topic as Service is some-

thing that is rarely discussed by students. Ms Jacee, Mr Mike and I were invited to give a short speech about all the Service projects

that took place this whole year. Ms Jacee and I had prepared a slideshow with all the photos of the Service projects throughout the

year.

Ms Jacee began the assembly by giving the definition of Service and asked the students some questions. All the secondary students

had a great time to share their meaning of service. Mr Mike talked about the “Gift that Gives Back” project which was held last term.

Lastly, I talked about Straits Community Heroes and its on-going projects such as the “Toy Donation Drive” and some of the Straits

Heroes projects which occurred throughout the year and invited them to join the Round Square committee.

In the end, some of the students were awarded for being volunteers for KECHARA homeless project last year. Well Done to Alvina,

Yike, Tan Ye Jing and Felicia!

Year 6 students are coming to the end of a very busy year. It seems to have been so much about working hard and preparing

for exams that it was great to be able to relax and feel like students who all deserved a bit of a treat. So, last Friday, Year 6 set

out on their epic journey, right to the other end of the island, to visit the ‘Escape’ treetops park.

We were greeted by a short rain shower as we got of the coach but it wasn’t going to dampen our enthusiasm! So, after meet-

ing our guide and getting rid of the bags we didn’t need, it was off to find some trees to climb.

The morning was spent climbing walls and trees, jumping off high towers, swinging from a great height, bouncing on a varie-

ty of trampolines and even checking out our own circus skills on a trapeze swing.

One or two of the students were a little nervous to begin with while a few others were openly worried about the heights in-

volved. However, it was great to see that all students became fully involved with the activities and really satisfying to see

those few face their fears and get over them.

Many within this year group have been together for a number of years and have formed some very strong friendships and

they put this into good effect by showing their caring side for each other and by working as a team to complete some of the

obstacles.

Then, all too soon, we were escorted away for our lunch and then whisked back to school on the coach. We had a great time! It was a really fitting way to come towards the end of Year 6’s time in Primary School.

These past few weeks have been very busy indeed. In Science, we

have been investigating different materials that block light and test-

ing them. In Maths, we have been revising our addition and sub-

traction skills. In English, we have been learning about how to de-

scribe a scene within a fantasy setting using both real and imaginary

settings or a mix of both. We are now starting to learn about play

scripts and how they are presented as well as preparing one of our

own. We are busy preparing for the upcoming Art Exhibition and

Science Fair and all the children are so excited to show you all their

work!

YEAR ONE—with Mr Myron and Ms Lisa

As usual, it has been a very busy couple of weeks for Year 2. They have just finished their assessment week and we are both

very impressed with the focus shown during this time. It has been great to see the progress made from the first term to this

term. We aren’t always looking for the top grades; it is the progress and improvements that are important.

Since then, we have had our Fathers’ Day celebrations. It was lovely to spend some time with our dads and show them just

how much they mean to us. We did a little dance on the stage to the song ‘Daddy Cool’. It was a lot of fun. Then, we ate cake

and did an activity together in the classroom.

Now, we are preparing for our school’s first ever Science Fair. We don’t want to give too much away but, we are using a lot of

skills for our projects. We are being creative, collaborative, scientific and learning how to develop our research skills.

Year 3 have been working harder than ever! We have finished all our assessments and have begun to focus on the array

of end of year projects including Art and Science. We thoroughly enjoyed making our volcanoes and cannot wait to

share our learning with parents next week.

In Mathematics we are continuing to solidify our knowledge in areas such as Fractions and Time, ready for the move to

Year 4. In English, we have also been reviewing our Year 3 targets and making sure we can use all our punctuation accu-

rately and consistently.

In Humanities we have begun to learn all about the Shang Dynasty! So far we have located where and when the Shang

Dynasty took place as well as what it was like for people to live during this period of time. We will now turn our atten-

tion to dragon bones!

There was a sense of relief among the children as Assessment Week drew to a close. Well done to everybody for trying

their best—not only during exams but also on the stage! How wonderful it was to see the Year Fours perform with so

much energy and confidence on Thursday during the Primary Showcase! The effort during rehearsals paid off and all of

the teachers and parents are so proud of the children! Thank you to all of the supportive parents who attended.

In class, the Year Fours worked hard

on their Geography project which

perfectly (and coincidentally) ties in

with the upcoming Science Fair.

Small groups collaborated to create

the distinct layers of a rainforest. It

is now displayed on the doors for

you to enjoy. So...not long now till

the end of Year Four! Keep focused

everybody!

It has been a very busy two weeks! Bas-ketball is constantly on our minds lately. We have been practising our basketball routine for the Primary Showcase as long as we can remember. One, two, three, four, two, two, three, four… we can hear Miss Carrena counting the beats for us,

even in our sleep. This has been a re-warding experience for all of us too. Miss Carrena inspired us to come up with our own moves. She encouraged us to refine our performance and reined us back in when our enthusiasm got out of hand. We saw our costumes last week which was very exciting! We can’t wait to perform for our families and friends this week!

YEAR FIVE—with Ahreum

We really are getting close to the end of term now but we are so busy in Year 6.

After enjoying our trip to ‘Escape’ last week, we’re back into the hectic life of a

Year 6 student at Straits.

This Friday, we will be performing our Year 6 assembly. Rehearsal time has been

at a premium with everything else that’s happening but this is a special assembly

for the students. It is only just sinking in for some that this will be their final as-

sembly as a member of the Primary School. Reminiscing about the content of the

assembly has brought out a few realisations that the students are about to take a

huge step in their education, as they prepare for education in the Secondary,

rather than Primary system.

While this has been going on, the students may not even have had much time to

digest their Checkpoint scores fully. Overall, the hard work has paid off and the

students can be very proud of their achievements.

This week has also been all about working on Maths projects in order to try our best to complete them before the end of term. It will be very tight but I hope it can be done!

What a year it has been so far! As the summer holidays are approaching, it’s a time for celebration in the Maths department. We had wonderful achievements throughout the year. I still remember my first departmental meeting with my team, where we were setting our targets and motto for this academic year. Our motto was we should believe that all students could succeed in Maths and we wanted to do all we could to make it happen.

To achieve the target, we worked hard to inspire students and help them enjoy maths; developing the confidence to use the maths skills they learnt to solve the myriad of problems.

As a team, we understood that deep learning takes time to evolve. It requires us to create opportunities to apply skills in a variety of ways over an extended period of time and this is what we strived to do and somehow we achieved it this year.

Below are some of the highlights of the events, competition and achievements of the year.

We participated in MAA-AMC8 Maths Games in Term 1, which is also known as American Maths Olympiad. This game in-volved only KS3 students. We had 3 top scorers who achieved first, second and third places

We celebrated Pi day in March, where students participated in different pi related activities. It was a huge success and stu-dents requested it again next year. Mr Shahrul worked so hard to make this event so successful

We participated in SASMO Maths games where we achieved extremely excellent results. We managed to get 3 silvers and 5 bronzes. We also achieved 10th place for Year 10 category in Malaysia

We participated in the KANGAROO Maths competition where we managed to get 2 silver and 3 bronze places

For the first time, all the Year 11 students sat for the Extended Maths IGCSE exam. We are hoping for 100% of A-C for both Extended and Additional Maths this year because we managed to get 94% last year in Extended and 100% in Add Maths

In Checkpoint Year 9, we are setting a new record this year and officially we completed the 5th year of excellent results. Below

are the comparisons of the results of the past five years. Well-done to all Year 9 students!

We are looking forward for next academic year with some new strategies and plans for Maths department. Hope for the best!

This year’s Primary Showcase will be based on High School Musical. The Pri-

mary students have been working hard rehearsing for the forthcoming High

School Musical performance and they are all very excited about their perfor-

mance on Wednesday 27th June and Thursday 28th June.

Q: Why are you running this Activity?

It’s something fun that children need nowadays, especially interaction

between peers instead of a computer screen.

Q: Is it challenging or easy to teach students? Why/why not?

It is challenging; the game comes with its own set of rules unlike other

board games and a lot of planning and strategy is involved.

Q: How did you get interested in this Activity?

A friend of mine introduced me to the game, and I’ve loved it ever since.

Q: Who is your favorite student in this Activity and why?

Those who know the game well and present themselves a worthy oppo-

nent in Carcassonne.

Q: What age level do you prefer to teach and why?

Primary, simply because they are really into the characters and play their

best to win and compromise at the same time.

Q: Have you learned new things teaching them?

Children their age do have a lot of compassion towards one another, and

sometimes it takes compassion to make alliances to win the game.

Q: How do your students make progress?

They show understanding in their game play, and manage to score at

least 30 points on the score board.

Believe it or not, the end of the school year is almost upon us again. The Secondary Student

Council would like to reflect upon the positives which have been accomplished in Secondary

this year. We are so happy to have had Jemerine lead us this year as our President. Her positive

and energetic attitude have been infectious for the rest of us and helped us through the difficult

times.

We are also very proud of the increasing role that the Council is taking in regards to leadership

around the school. We have helped with enforcing the rules at both break and lunch times and

this has had a positive effect around

the school. We would like to thank

Desmond for his leadership and

continued patience with us as we

continue to strive towards improv-

ing the school.

Finally, we hoped that everyone enjoyed the school production this week. It is a massive project and we

are so thankful to all the teachers and students involved in making in such as success. With this being the final message from the Council, we would like to wish everyone a safe and happy summer holiday.

Mandarin Jigsaw classroom

The Jigsaw Classroom is a cooperative learning technique that reduces racial conflict among school children, promotes better learning, improves

student motivation, and increases enjoyment of the learning experience. The jigsaw technique was developed and named in 1971 at the University

of Texas, Austin by Elliot Aronson.

I applied the Jigsaw activity in my Year 8 writing

lesson. They have to produce an essay with the title:

The Home using coordinative construction. First,

they met in home groups. Second, I split them into

three teams to explore different sub-titles, such as

living room, kitchen and bathroom. When they met

in expert groups, they had to discuss and answer the

questions that I gave. Then they returned to home

groups to share their ideas and write an essay.

I found that Jigsaw writing activities encourage

students to take part in the writing and discussion.

Every student is able to contribute in the activity.

Through the discussion, creative sentences are used

more often in their writing.

Last but not least, we learnt the Mandarin equiva-

lent to the current trending topic: ‘World Cup’, that

is 世界杯(shì jiè bēi).

SUBJECT SPOTLIGHT: MANDARIN —with Ms Pang Sook Yee

We are now nearing the end of the year and many

students have started to complete the final prepara-

tions for them to be given their Bronze certificates.

Students have had to complete four sections of their

award during this year: physical, service, skills and

the adventurous journey. A lot of the focus of our

newsletters has been on the adventurous journey

section. However, students must also choose an

activity for physical, service and skills which show

that they can be well-rounded and holistic learners.

Year 10 students have opted for skills activities

largely based around music with the physical sec-

tion being taken up by the wonderful array of sports

that the school has to offer. Service activities have

varied from being part of the Round Square Knights

to working for charity organisations outside of the

school. Students have had to complete 13 hours of

two of these sections whereas the other one must

take place over 26 weeks. All evidence for this is

placed on the Online Record Book (which even has

an app!) They have all worked extremely hard and

Mr. Hasfis and I are very proud of the students. We

can’t wait to give them their awards!

STRAITS DRAGONS - Penang School Sports Fixtures

Date: 24th April 2018

Team: 15 under Boys Football

Game: Straits vs Tenby

Venue: Tenby

Under 15 Team members: Firdaus, Jack, Danny, Wayne, Yang,

Brendon, Owen, Sean, Kai Wen, Zac

We recently played against Tenby. As soon we reached their football field we changed into our football boots and started to warm up with some passing drills and shooting drills. The match started off and Tenby got the kick-off and in a blink of an eye, they had already scored a long-range kick from the mid line. The football lads were shocked by that but we were not flustered that easily. Danny scored the first goal for SIS and it was tied. The half time whistle was blown and it ended with 1-1. Mr. Vinod gave the team a speech on our performance on the field which boosted the team’s confidence and we started the second half with a kick-off. It was a very intense match; the defender's goal kick by Tenby was like a shot across the field and they gained lots of possession in the match and lots of slide tackles being made towards SIS attackers. We had less chance to bring the ball forward to their defensive zone. We were down by 3-1 already. We could have tightened our defence more by man marking and played a much more controlled game. Overall it was a good experience. Results: Tenby 3- Straits 1
