with Elvira CapreeseAnne Murray... un-Canadian? That soundsfamiliar. But, before Keith James can tear intohis fellow broadcasters for not playing AnneMurray's new single, Everyday, because itdoesn't qualify as Cancon, listen to this. MarkCartland, Music Director at Country 1110 CKTYSarnia, didn't need to be pressured into playingAnne's new release. The CKTY media releasereads, "Anne Murray debuts red hot." The singlewent into heavy rotation at the station and wasan immediate add at No. 15 on the Top 25Countdown. Here's the key . . . and perhapsmore broadcasters should allow their listeners asay in what they like. As Mark points out, "Wehave had exceptional reponse to Anne'sperformance on the Canadian Country MusicAwards show and agree that this is perhaps thefinest song Anne has recorded in years." AnneMurray and Bryan Adams are internationalstars and the Cancon legislation shouldn't beused as a scapegoat for not playing their records.Pierre Juneau perhaps said it best in his quote on

". . the prophets of doom, the messengers of medioc-rity, will be overwhelmed by the new generation ofcompetent, creative, confident artisans, and by allthose preceding generations who have already dem-onstrated their freshness of mind, their talent, andtheir capacity for inspired leadership."

"the prophets of doom .. . " that first appearedin RPM's masthead on June 6, 1970, and hasremained there as a reminder of what this greatvisionary was about. (EC: Right on . . . !)

This just in . . . ! Hold onto your hats, preliminary TV ratings information for theCCMA Awards show (Sept. 15) indicate therewere more than a million viewers watching . . .

actually 1.545 million. A very excited SheilaHamilton tells me this is almost 50 percenthigher t hen last year, and 33 percent higher thenthe Junos. There's a message there for the Junopeople. When the show opened with our ownsuperstar Anne Murray performing, it was asafe bet that the viewers were there for theduration. (EC: And no Nashville video clips!)

CCMA not pure country ... ! Yes, the CCMAAwards were good this year. But again, theywere intruded upon byi every flea-bitten, half-baked act that CTV could dig up to promotetheir talk shows, sportscasters, Shakespeareanactors and who knows who else. The CCMAshould put their foot downand make the awardspure Cancon and pure country. Let CTV usesome other hit show to promote their littleclique. (EC: If they had one!)Itjust didn't comeoff. And to think of all the young, new countryacts who would have loved to be presenters andwho needed the boost. No CTV ... I'm sorry, itwas pretty sad. (EC: One of these years . . .

they'll get it right!!) But it was better than theother award show(s)!! I

Remember the good old days . . . ? Not

many of you will, or probably want to. Howtimes have changed. Priority today seems to begetting as much government money as possible. The sad part of it all is that it's not governmentmoney ... it's money from taxpayers ... you and

me, and our neighbours. A few of the people,Italked to about some of the seminars that wentdown at the recent CCMA Canadian CountryMusic Week, were pretty pissed off. Hand outsand more hand outs ... everybody was lookingfor more government funding. Actually theydidn't care who it came from as long as someonewas footing part or all of the bill. There are alot

of people in the recording industry who gotthere on their own hook and fortunately, thereare still some around and they should let theirindependence be known. The new Jack Diamondalbum, for example has the gutsy notation,"This project was not funded in any shape orform by FACTOR." (EC: How far can you geton guts in this business . . ?)

A quotable quote ... ! Suze DeMarchi, of the

Baby Animals, was quoted as saying, "I wouldn't

urge anyone to make comparisons between meand other female singers, because I neverlistenedto them." Right on Suze. Too often I've read areview of a new artist, where the reviewercompares the act to someone else. Does thatimpress the reader or listener? I don't think so.Most of these recording acts worked for yearsdeveloping their own individual sound, thenalong comes some bonehead and comparesthem to someone who doesn't sound remotelyclose. (EC: They have to fill up space . . . !)

Peter Howell and Paul McCartney ... ! TheToronto Star's Peter Howell had the rareopportunity to interview Paul McCartney and

what a revelation. Howell went for the jugular,or if it wasn't his intent, he sure got some neatanswers from the obviously disturbed old Beatle.I knew there wasn't too much love betweenMcCartney and Lennon ... but WOW! Too badLennon isn't around to demand equal time.Howell is a breath of fresh air for the stogey oldStar. He reminds me of a real newspaper person, and we haven't seen any of those for along time.(EC: Not even in Vancouver . . . !)

Very touching ... ! I had the opportunity theother evening to be among the audience whowatched Anne Murray tape an In Concertsegment for Sound Source. She performed foursongs, live, from her new album and Wrong EndOf The Rainbow, in this setting, was even morebeautiful then when she does it in concert. Thiswas the first of the series hosted by BrianLinehan, and it will go to air sometime inOctober. Lesley Soldat tells me she is stillbuilding a good network of stations and theAnne Murray date should contribute to thatgrowth. A very touching, simple and honestAnne Murray. In fact after seeing her in thissetting and mood, her O'Keefe date just may beanti -climactic to me. (EC: I hear you . . . !)

Plagiarism ... ? We could hear about a bit ofskulduggery in the writing/publishing business, involving a fairly big star, who graces bothofficial languages. (EC: Doesn't everybodyborrow a note or two . . . ?)

The Wackers have the RPM Cup ... !Whata game, what a series, and all for the battle of theRPM Cup. The Ontario Music Industry Softballleague capped the season with the Sept. 18thfinal game. The Warner Wackers defeated Sony35 to 15. They hit ten home runs, one of whichwas Graham "rock 'n roll" Duff's whichsailedover the fence.

Our visitors are back in the groove. Therecession's over! The recession's over . . . !

COVER STORY - by David Pierson

Loreena McKennitt continues Celtic traditionsIn a business that's disappointed if MichaelJackson fails to sell ten million, it is totallyrefreshing to meet a multi -talented musicianlike Canada's Loreena McKennitt.

"I would never, ever change my music to sellmore units. If someone wants to buy my musicthen that's terrific but my music has to retain itsintegrity. When I busked at St. LawrenceMarket I'd make up to a thousand dollars for theweekend which is a lot of money. I mean howmuch is enough?"

Ironically the last thing McKennitt needs toworry about is selling more units. Her uniqueapproach to Celtic traditions by playing harpand v arious otherinstruments; her soaring vocalssinging lyrics written by herself and others suchas Tennyson, have found an audience thatpurchased an amazing 25,000 copies of her lastindependent release, Parallel Dreams.

Those kind of sales attracted the attention ofWarner Music Canada and an agreement wasworked out between her label, Quinlan Roadand Warner to distribute her just released fourthalbum, The Visit, on a more national basis.

"The arrangement with Warner Music cameabout partially as a need on my part to augment

Denon to distributeRykodisc in CanadaLloyd Nishimura, Manager of Denon's MusicDivision and Don Rose, President of Rykodisc, have jointly announced a distribution deal forCanada. Effective immediately, Denon willassume responsibility for promotion anddistribution of all music products on theRykodisc label in Canada. Denon will alsocontinue its distribution of Hannibal, acquiredearlier this year by Rykodisc.

Rykodisc was founded in 1984 as theworld's first CD -only label, and has becomeone of the fastest growing independents in theUS with sales last year topping $20 million.Highlights from the label, which is now full -format, include ground breaking releasecampaigns of the David Bowie and Frank Zappacatalogues, as well as innovations such as theworld's longest -playing CD, the first CD single, and most recently Play It By Ear, the first CDgame. Included on Rykodisc's rosterare GratefulDead drummer Mickey Hart, guitarist NilesLofgren, The Oyster Band, Jerry Jeff Walkerand Stewart & Gaskin.

"Our companies share a phenomenalnumber of characteristics," Nishimura pointsout. "We have similar business philosophiesand interest in digital technologies but mostimportantly, we are both committed tomaintaining integrity in the products we sell, whether in the recordings of classicalsymphonies or the reissues of David Bowie."

Rose was equally enthusiastic with thedistribution deal, noting, "At Denon Canada,we are assured that Rykodisc will be a priority. They are young, enthusiastic and aggressive. We already feel at home there. With this inmind, we're re -dedicating our commitment toexpanding our visibility in The Great WhiteNorth."

the distribution system I was already workingwithin. It quite obvious that we weren'table to service the growing interest and demandfor my music. As well, the people at Warnershave a deep appreciation for what my music isabout, and I believe we have embarked on awonderfully symbiotic journey together."

Born in Morden, Manitoba, McKennitt tookclassical piano lessons as a child. Her firstprofessional work was in small folk clubs andmusical theatre. She moved to Stratford, Ont.where she worked as -a composer, actor andsinger with the famed Shakespearean Festival.

On a visit to London, England McKennittfinally discovered a harp, an instrument she had

RPM - September 28, 1991 - 5

always wanted to play. A 250 pound purchase, her classical training and a loan from her parentsresulted in her first record release, Elemental, in1985. Since that time herpopularity has steadilygrown, enough so, that McKennitt is about toembark on a major 35 city cross Canada tour.

But no matter how big things will get forMcKennitt, her feet will no doubt stay firmlyplanted on the ground of her farmhouse inStratford. When told that one of her pressclippings seemed to have a missprint, callingthe Celtic tradition barbaric, McKennitt replied:

"That's supposed to be in the Bard tradition. But that's not the worst print mistake I've had.One release said I was a real smart lass but thewriter misunderstood and wrote that I wassupposed to be a real smart ass!" McKennittfinished with a roaring, good-natured laugh.

; ofChanges at CFOS. Kevin Kelly has joinedthe Owen Sound station as the AM ProgramDirector. He will also host the 6 to 9 am timeslot. Kelly was just recently with AM 109Kitchener, where he also did mornings. Middaysare now the property of Brent Bissell, who

comes on board from CKOT Tillsonburg. MusicDirector Jamie Hall hosts the afternoon driveand the newest arrival, Stephenie Eccles, sits inon evenings a few nights a week, with GaryVeraldi taking the others. Eccles was mostrecently with AM 96 Cambridge, where sheworked weekends. One of the big summerpromotions for the station was the CFOS Owen

Sound Day at the Skydome (Aug 10), apromotion handled by Promotion Director LynneScott. Thirteen busloads of listeners went to theDome to see the Jays lose 7-1 to Boston.

Peter Thompson, CJBQ Program Directorturned what he calls "casual curiosity" into a

money -making reality. He took his Five DaysOn The Road, literally on the road, a five day

trek through Eastern Canada and the UnitedStates. The trip involved live on -air reportsfrom Canadian and American highways.Thompson talked about the independent truckingindustry in Canada and a trucker's way of life.

CHFM's Gerry Forbes, who hosts the morningshow, was up in the air in support of localheroes, the Calgary Stampeders. The station'sPromotions Director Glenn Stensrud, reportsthat Forbes climbed up the north east tower atMcMahon Stadium on Aug. 5th, vowing to staythere until the Calgary Stampeders sold over

CHFM's morning personality Gerry Forbes ontower platform 150 feet above McMahon Stadium.

25,000 tickets for the Aug. 8th home gameagainst the B.C. Lions. "He spent the next threeand a half days 150 feet above the parking lot,"says Stensrud, "eating, sleeping and doing hismorning show from the tower platform." TheNo. 1 Crusader for the Stampeders ran into somerough weather in his cramped position. Forbesrecalls that when the sun set on Aug. 6th, the skystarted to get ugly, "One of the guys at thestadium told me to get downright away, becausewhen lightning hits the tower, it lights up like ascene out of Star Wars!" The publicity generatedby the tower stunt set a Stampeder individualrecord for game day sales on Aug 8th, as well asa record fora three day period of game day sales.

MIN : ; 11-111111by Tim Evans

The final week . . . Yes Bryan Adams'(Everything I Do) I Do It For You hangs on forone more week, arecord-setting ninth. It droppeddramatically in points, but Rod Stewart's TheMotown Song and Paula Abdul's The PromiseOf A New Day split their points so evenly thatAdams was able to keep the top spot. Stewart orAbdul will be No. 1 next week.

Could Adams be No. 1 next week? Can'tStop This Thing We Started bullets to No. 19,but not close enough for Bryan Adams to replacehimself on top of the Hit Tracks chart next week. How many times has an artist replacedthemselves at No. 1? A) never B) once C) twice.

Not even a full week. Guns N' Roses' UseYour Illusion I & II barely had any time in storesbefore the tabulations were done, yet it garneredenough points to blast onto the charts at No. 11.

That edges out Paula Abdul's Spellbound as thehighest debuting album this year. Rod Stewart'sDowntown Train had the top debut last year atNo. 12. The last time an album entered as highwas 1989 when Madonna's Like A Prayer alsodebuted at No. 11.

Rush gains but drops ... It's alittle confusingbut Rush's Roll The Bones gained points thisweek, but drops one spot to No. 13. That'sthanks to bigger gains by Bob Seger and DireStraits, and the big entry from Guns N' Roses.

Believe it or not! It happened twice. Twotimes an artist was knocked out of the No. 1position by another song that artist was involvedin. Sonny Bono reached the top with Laugh AtMe (October 4, 1965. One week later Sonny &Cher's Baby Don't Go was on top. DonnyOsmond also turned the trick with Go AwayLittle Girl being replaced by the Osmonds' YoYo in October of 1971.

When Forbes finally came down into the stadiumat half time on Aug. 8th, he was welcomed by31,150 fans.

Ner1111 I d ;IANGilles Godard, one of Canada's top countryproducers, adds the necessary proof to thisclaim on this week's RPM Country 100. Godardproduced no less than four singles on the chart,a record for a Canadian producer. He producedRonnie Prophet's The Feeling Of Love (#63),Kelita's Merry Go Round (#70), BobbyLaLonde's Somebody Painted My Home (#78),and this week's new entry, Runaway Heart byEddie Eastman (#95). Now living in Nashville,Godard has also become well known onNashville's Music Row. He also produced JanieFricke's new self -titled album, released onIntersound International.

Jack Diamond hosted a unique launch party atBronco's in Toronto's west end on Sept. 10.After the first set, guests were treated to chili, cornbread and apple pie, courtesy of AmandaNewell. The Roto Noto gang was also on handto give support to Jack's preview of his newalbum, The Diamond Is Jack, released on theRoto Noto label. Included wereRandall Cousinsand his wife Irene, Diane Raeside, Lisa Loganand Kim Doolittle. Also adding their supportwere Gerry Knight and his wife Liz, RhondaSilver, Henry McGuirk from Country MusicNews, and George Pasher, plus a roomful ofJack Diamond fans. While his brother workedthe crowd, hawking the album, Jack ran downall 12 tracks, which included his past hits ofLong Cool Woman, Heartwreck, Rescue Me,Holdin' On For Dear Life and Love Me BackTogether. He also previewed his next single,Money In My Pocket. He was in good voice andthe room lent itself to his vocal warmth, particularly on the Rita Chiarelli penning ofSomeone To Lean On.

960 CFAC Radio was named Station of theYear at the Country Music Association ofCalgary's annual awards ceremony (Aug. 25).Bob Spitzer, Program Director of the Calgarystation, pointed out that the station had made a

number of changes over the past year and thatit "was nice to have these improvementsrecognized by the CMAC and the people ofCalgary. Last March, CFAC's morning team ofJim Hughes and Britt Matheson won the CalgarySun's Who Gets You Up In The Morning pollfor the most popular morning show in Calgary.

Mile Zero's No Place Rather -Be has been

getting excellent feedback from countryprogrammers. Earl Darbyshire of CHOW -FMWhitehorse writes, "She sings like a bird."Bruce Leperre of CKDM Dauphin finds "Asusual with Mile Zero, a solid song with theexcellent vocals we've come to expect." "Aninstant add," writes Tom'Romkey of CKECNew Glasgow. Bill Sleaver of CHMO Moosoneefinds the record "Just Great." "Excellent," saysFrancis Sergerie of CJMC AM/FM Ste -Anne -Des -Monts. "This girl sings very well. I like it,"from Alex Mariotte of CIBM Riviere-du-loup,and, from Rob Weir of CKBW Bridgewater,"Mile Zero delivers another fine piece of work."The track is included on DMT CD #2.

This year, producer Gibson's concentration wason Cancon, and it worked out to 100% forperformers. With just a couple of exceptions,Gibson was also able to draw a full slate ofCanadian country people as presenters. Unlikeprevious years where the Nashville inserts weremore of an intrusion, this year's show was tight, well -paced and the performers, presenters andwinners were a credit to Canada's country musicindustry.

BOB SEGER AND THESILVER BULLET BANDThe Fire InsideCapitol - C2 -91134-F

Produced by various producers, Segerbeing the most prominent, this is his firstalbum since the 1986 release of Like ARock. Seger has lost a little of the firethat he displayed in his earlier recordings, but there should be enough interest tobring him back onto the charts. Most ofthe material was written by Seger. Hiscover of Tom Waits' Blind Love andNew Coat Of Paint reveal a much moredefined vocal and even projection, perhaps a lack of confidence. Heobviously feels a little more at homewith She Can't Do Anything Wrong, written by Bill Davis and Walt Richmond,a key track. The Real Love, a ballad, has been taken as the first single, and, considering the topsy-turvy musicformats of some stations, Seger justmight squeak through, which would addto the promotion of the album. Also keyareThe Mountain withJoe Walsh joiningSeger on guitars, and the title track withthe added attraction of Aalto Reed onsax, guitarist Steve Lukather, and RickVito on slide guitar. LOREENA McKENNITT - Celtic/PopThe VisitWEA - CD -75151-P

It might be difficult for critics to recognizethe incredible entertainment valuecontained in this package being thatthey are so enamored with rock andun-poppy pop. McKennitt, a Canadian, offers an unbelievably pure and veryserious look at her brand of Celtic musl c.The music itself could become quiteboring, if restricted to the traditionaldrums and uillean pipes. However,McKennitt's enchanting and soaringvocals are beautifully layered to conveythe sometimes Intense yet often tenderlyric content of the Druid cum Camelotfolklore properties of her material.McKennitt's writing partners aren't tooshabby in the prose and poetrydepartments, but it's McKenna -Cs musicthat adds that mysterious magic, almost

bordering on heresy, to Shakespeare'sCymbeline and to Tennyson's The LadyOf Shalott.Traditional Greensleeves, with lyrics by King Henry VIII, displaysMcKennitt's Celtic kick, that might nothave pleased the founder of the Churchof England. McKennitt backs up hervocal warmth with several of theinstruments she has mastered includingthe harp, accordion, the ukalin, bodhran, whistle and keyboards. The addedinstrumentation of fiddle, tambouras, uillean pipes, sitar, cello, uda drum, balalaika, with just a touch of electricguitar and bass, brings McKennitt'sScarborough Fair into a modern daysetting. Also key are Tango To Evora,Bonny Portmore, and two McKennittoriginals, All Souls Night and Thehauntingly beautiful The Old Ways.Produced by McKennitt and BrianHughes. (CD reviewed) - WG

RUSHRoll The BonesAnthem - ANK-1064-H

Much will be written about this Incrediblerock trio, but, what's most Important isthe fact they are back: Geddy Lee, AlexLifeson and Neil Peart. This is their firststudio album since 1989 when Prestowas released. Chronicles, the band'sfirst Greatest Hits package was releasedin 1990. To say this new album Is theirfinest to date, Is perhaps anunderstatement. They have bided theirtime away from the recording studiowell. Each track here is key, obviouslywritten for today's market. The songmaterial, the vocal projection anddynamics, and the Instrumental backing, layered perfectly to cushion andenhance the vocals, are testament tothe greatness of this rock machine. Aswith Presto, Rupert Hine, co -producedthis album with Rush. Recording tookplace at Le Studio, in Morin Heights,Quebec, and atToronto's McClear Placeand mixed at Nomis Studios in London,England. Dreamline has been taken asthe first single. (CD reviewed) - WG

RANDY TRAVISHigh LonesomeWarner Bros - CD -26661-P

- Country

The major factor in the Randy Travissuccess story is his seemingly non -

ending touring, which has served toincrease his fan base tremendously.Sales of his albums attest to hispopularity. His last album, Always &Forever, has sold more than 600,000copies in Canada, a record fora countryact. That Travis vocal charm wrapsitself around some pretty good writingmaterial here, including the title track, written by Gretchen Peters. Also keyare the Don Schlitz/Thom Schulerpenning of Point Of Light, and AllergicTo The Blues, written by Alan Jacksonand Jim McBride, and which Just maybe a left -fielder hit. Travis also satisfiesthe bible -betters with I'm Gonna Have ALittle Talk With Jesus, which he co -wrote with Don Schlitz. ForeverTogether, which Travis wrote with AlanJackson, has been taken as the firstsingle and is included on Warnercompilation CD #109. Some retailershave already front -racked this album, a

good for it. (CD reviewed) - WG

GARTH BROOKS - CoUntry/PopRopl n' The WindCapitol - C2 -96330-F

Now that Garth Brooks is an establishedcrossover artist with his No Fencesalbum reflecting that status with almostdouble platinum in Canada, Ropin' TheWind should be a shoo-in. Here, Brooksgoes even further afield with a stunningperformance of Billy Joel's Shameless. His current single, Rodeo, written byLarry Bastian, has climbed Into the Top10 of the RPM Country 100 after onlyfive weeks on release. Brooks alsoshows he's no slouch in the writingdepartment. He co -wrote In LonesomeDove with Cynthia Limbaugh, PapaLoved Mama with Kim Williams and anextraordinary vocal assault on TheRiver, which he co -wrote with VictoriaShaw. That's Trisha Yearwoodsupplying vocal harmony on this track. These are all key tracks, but don'toverlook the Brooks/Pat Alger penningof What She's Doing Now or AgainstThe Grain, written by Bruce Bouton,Larry Cordle and Carl Jackson.Retailers will attract much attentionand sales if this album werefront -racked. Produced by AllenReynolds. (CD reviewed) -WG

RICHIE SAMBORA - RockStranger In This TownMercury - 848 895-2-0

Richie Sambora, guitarist/songwriter forthe monster platinum selling Bon Jovi, has come up with a fairly decent firstsolo album. While not as blatantlycommercial as Bon Jovi, Samboraclearly shows he knows how to write acommercial hook. Songs like the titletrack and Ballad Of Youth have solidAOR potential. Curiously the guitarsparks never really fly, even the songMr. Bluesman, that has none other than

Eric Clapton playing the solo, is drownedin strings and production. But thenSambora's listening instructions wereto turn down the lights and II ght a candleand my office was all out ofcandles.(CD reviewed) - DP

GERRY KINGBoots & JeansSaddlestone - SOMCD-106

Produced by Gerry King and RayDoggett, most of the tracks wererecorded at Nashville's Fireside Studios. The Cowboy Thing To Do was producedby Peter Morris and Ron Irving and ForLoving You was produced by MichaelSaxell, and both recorded atVancouver's Bullfrog Studios. King hasused a variety of writers for this gentlemix of traditional country, country swing, and blues. His vocals are particularlyeffective on Eve rytime I Reach For Her,Stoned To The Bone With The Blues,How Can I Tell My Heart and Tryin' ToFind The Feelin'. King has already hada good chart run with the title track andany of the above could do the same..(CD reviewed) - WG

INFIDELSInfidelsI.R.S. X2- 13110-F

Infidels Is a collaboration between twolong fixtures on the Toronto musicscene, Molly Johnson and guitarist/producer Norman Orenstein. And whata collaboration it is! Johnson's vocalsare mixed right up front and their songsshowcase her excellent vocals superbly.100 Watt Bulb is Infidel's first single andvideo and its catchy riffs and drivingvocal almost guarantee it extensiveairplay. While there area few forgettablenumbers on Infidels, for the most part Itis a very impressive debut. I.R.S.chairman, Mlles Copeland wassufficiently impressed to sign them toan eight -album deal, so no doubt you'llbe hearing more of Infidels In the nearfuture. (CD reviewed) - DP
