STRUCTURE

The structure is simple. It has a body, element (wire mesh and perforated plate)which filters out incoming particles, and a cover or cap.The mesh size of the Wire Mesh depends on the size of the particles to be filtered.Strainers are, in general, of 10, 20, 30, 40, 60, 100 or 200 mesh, and the openingsize of the hole in perforated plate utilized would usually be 3mm, 4mm, 6mm,8mm or 10mm.

As dimension (body size) of the strainers in casting and forging are not flexible,and size is already fixed, selecting 200 or finer mesh will require extra caution as the ratio of element’s open area will decrease, resulting in higher pressure drop and lower level of flow.

Effective open area shall be guaranteed in the element. It may require 5~7 times larger surface area of element, depending on the mesh count and the mesh wire diameter, so that it can secure 3~3.5 times larger open area than the inlet nozzle cross sectional area.

A blow-down valve can be installed on the cap of the strainer in order to clean particles off of the element easily.Take caution when setting the strainer up in front of a cooling-tower pump. Huge amount of particles collected may result in low level of flow and formation of cavitations.

FUNCTION

Strainers are installed on gas or liquid pipelines to protect equipments from foreign particles such as rust, scale,weld slag and sand.

It is usually installed upstream of equipments such as pumps, flow meters, various control valves, steam traps, spray nozzles and turbines.It can also be installed on heat exchangers, if necessary.

INTERNAL ELEMENTS

Element is a very important part of the strainers.Material compatibility, flow rate, filtration efficiency and strength shall fully be consideredwhen designing the elements, and should be constructed in a structure which is able to preventbypass of any non-filtered fluid through the gap between element and the body.

TYPE

Strainers are classified into Conical Type, T Type, Y Type and Bucket Type.Bucket Types are available in Simplex and Duplex Type.

STRAINER TYPES

This Conical Type Strainer, which consists of element only, is installed between 2 flanges, and does not have housing body.Even after the cleaning the whole process line of newly installed equipments and pipings, there are potential of lots of particles such as weld slag and sand. Sometimes gloves, clothes used during the installation or other foreign matters are present inside the piping network where the fluids run. This “Temporary Strainer” is for use for 6~12 months to filter such matters.
