Storytelling & Links with Literacy

Why bother reading storybooks in another Language? We read stories to young children before they can

read in their mother tongue. Develops listening skills. Allows all children to join in and respond in the

language at some level. It provides a real context for language & cultural

heritage. Reinforce what we are doing in Literacy.

Some tips: Picture books can seem ‘babyish’ so use as a structure to emulate & exploit the familiarity of

the text. Books are small for use with a whole class so scan into PowerPoint & contact the HIAS team

for help, particularly if a book is in the Catherine Cheater resource packs. Authentic ‘story’ language is actually very challenging for a teacher – it is not ‘holiday

French’ so use soundfiles where possible & do not expect to know every word, after all, do you know every word possible in the English language?

end up paying in Euros) instead type in the title of a book and then the language to see if available already in the uk.

Please feel welcome to add your own favourites and don't worry about completing all the boxes - just whatever you have time to complete will be very useful!

You might want to dip in and out of books (a bit like the Catherine Cheater scheme of work) or

exploit texts further, using them to introduce vocabulary or even linguistic structures,

or go the whole way and use as the basis for a half term's scheme of work...
