Storyboard

• Important aspect of pre-production stage• Sequence of drawings representing how each key

frame will be composed.• Visual (and annotated) account of shot type plus how

subject and camera motion will occur.

• Helps articulates the Mise-en-scène

Storyboard Artist

• Hired at the beginning of a film project.• Breaks down the scenes of the script into shots which

can be filmed.• Process is overseen by the film's director.• As production draws closer, the artwork is brought to the

attention of the cinematographer.• Presentation-style storyboards can be used by an

executive producer to raise finance during development stage.

Manipulation of Time

• Condenses the communication process to a pictorial simplification of a multitude of complicated factors.

• This can be achieved, in many cases, as simply as….a cave drawing. But in an aspect ratio.

Aspect Ratio

• The aspect ratio of an image is the ratio of the width of the image to its height, expressed as two numbers separated by a colon

• The 4:3 ratio (generally named as "Four-Three", "Four-by-Three", or "Four-to-Three") for standard television also the aspect ratio used for 35 mm films in the silent era.

• 16:9 (generally named as "Sixteen-Nine", "Sixteen-by-Nine" and "Sixteen-to-Nine") is the international standard format of HDTV, non-HD digital television and analog widescreen television

Storyboard Making

• Most commonly, storyboards are drawn in pen or pencil. • Alternatives:photos, cut-out pictures from magazines, or

computer application. • Basic shapes, stick figures, and simple backgrounds are

valid.

• Frames drawn on index cards can be rearranged to

move parts of the story around.
