Organic and Biodynamic

Vegetable, Herb and Flower Seeds

Page 4: Stormy Hall 2012

Dear Gardeners and Farmers, welcome to our seventeenth catalogue.

Reflecting on the 2011 growing season it really would seem that extremes are now

becoming the norm. Winter started early with lots of snow and very low temperatures.

This did not only damage our greenhouse but also many of the cabbage plants which

were intended for seed production. Spring turned out to be early and warm but extremely

dry. This was followed by a dull and cold summer with plenty of rain. Most of our

vegetable crops did cope well with these extremes. The cabbages and cauliflower grew

to an impressive size. Our seed crops did not cope so well and, as in the rest of Northern

Europe, some crops failed to produce good seeds. Due to this a few varieties are not

available this year but nevertheless we are again able to offer you a range of more than

250 vegetable, herb, and flower varieties.

In the catalogue you will find popular well-tried older varieties and new ones that have

been bred by biodynamic breeders. All the seeds are produced on a small scale by

biodynamic and organic growers either here in this country or bought from other seed

companies in Europe who also have a local network of growers producing the seeds. We

find it important that seeds are produced as locally as possible and to tell you where the

seeds come from. Next to each variety in the catalogue is a code, which refers to the

grower (See page 3).

Many of these growers are also involved with maintaining and breeding new varieties

and often meet together to share their progress. By using these new varieties we support

this development and we can benefit from it as they are better and give us an alternative

to the F1 hybrids which use unsuitable biotechnology and it is not possible for growers

to harvest seed that can be used for next year crops from F1 Hybrids varieties.

By each biodynamic-bred variety is a special symbol, so you can recognize them more

easily and hopefully many of you will consider trying them out in your garden or on

your farm. We welcome any comments on the crops you grow from our seeds. Feedback

is greatly valued because the process of improving varieties is ongoing.

At the end of the growing season when all seeds are harvested we need time for

cleaning, grading and testing the seeds for germination. Because of this we can only send

you our catalogue in early December. We try, however, to supply you with seeds all year

round, but in autumn we may not have all varieties available yet.

It is now also possible to download our catalogue and order forms from our website. On

www.stormy-hall-seeds.co.uk you can also see photos of many of the varieties we offer.

Growing seeds ourselves here at Stormy Hall means that we are often working out in the

fields, especially in the summer and are not always able to answer your phone call. We

will be pleased to receive your order by email, fax or post during this time.

We thank all our customers and growers for their ongoing support and we hope that in

the future we can keep meeting the demand for quality seed. As we are rapidly

outgrowing our capacity here at Stormy Hall we need to find new ways to improve our

facilities and find new growers to produce seeds. Any support for this is greatly

appreciated.

All at Stormy Hall wish you a pleasant and fruitful gardening year.
