CSEF Applications (by 3.30pm)
Welcome back to school. I hope you had an enjoyable break and a
chance to unwind. We would especially like to welcome our new
Foundation students and their families and that you and your children
are settling in.
House Captains Speeches and House Assemblies
Last Friday we had the pleasure of listening to the House Captain
speeches from the Year 6 students. Firstly, we need to congratulate all
those children that gave a speech to their House and commend them
on their confidence and skills. It was amazing to see and hear the tips
and techniques from the Super Speak program (3 week Public Speaking
incursion for Year 5 students in 2015) being effectively used during the
presentations. And as a result, the final voting was extremely close in
all Houses. Congratulations to all those children that were elected to a
House Captain or Vice-Captain position but an even bigger
congratulations to all the students who prepared, practised and
delivered their speech so effectively and passionately.
Cook (Green) House Captains: Luke Henry and Sarah Shelton
Cook House Vice-Captains: Cameron Lee and Ellie Baird

For 2016, there will be a change to Assemblies on a Monday

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
What’s new?
If you haven’t already noticed, the new portable is up and running. We are currently expecting the
veranda/walkway, that will shelter the students from the elements, to be finished before the end of the
term. Whilst less glamourous, but just as important, the Junior School boy’s toilets were refurbished over
the holiday which include new floor covering and facilities. We are also lhappy to report that the old
odours are no longer present.
3 Way Conferences
By now you would have received a letter outlining the 3 Way Conferences that will be held next week on
Monday 15th and Tuesday 16th February. The meetings are a great opportunity for the parents, students
and teachers to introduce themselves and find out a little about their child’s classroom for 2016. If you
haven’t received a notice, please contact your child’s teacher. Confirmation times for interviews will be
sent home this week.
The Importance of Self-esteem
Over the past 2 weeks our Quality Beginnings program has been running in all of classrooms. From Foundation to the Senior School, grades focus on activities that help children recognise and deal with a variety of social, academic and classroom issues. Activities can range from how to introduce yourself to a new classmate and how to work with a group of students, to identify the sort of behaviour is best for learning in the class, setting personal goals and dealing with issues that may occur in the yard or with friends. An important component of Quality Beginnings that is reinforced throughout the program is student’s self-esteem. Self-esteem refers to the inner confidence and satisfaction that a person has that influences their social behaviour and learning. It is an unconditional acceptance of yourself. When you have high self-esteem, you accept yourself and your feelings. You have confidence in your opinions and your abilities. You also recognise your own strengths and accept your weaknesses. The way a person thinks about him or herself affect their quality of life. When you feel valuable, loveable and worthwhile you are more able to meet life’s challenges. Quite simply, if children have a healthy level of esteem and feel good about themselves, they are more likely to make friends and succeed at school. Melbourne Storm and Belonging Last Thursday, we were extremely privileged to have members of the Melbourne Storm NRL team visit the Year 3 to 6 classes. The 90 minute session involved the Storm’s School Educator Lenny Mason, Storm and Australian captain Cameron Smith and Prop Tim Glasby discussing what it means to ‘Belong’, the many different ways in which we belong within our society and how the notion of ‘Belonging to something’ affects our lives. It also reinforced many of the aspects of the Quality Beginning Social program currently being run in the classrooms. A huge thank-you to Randall Vague for organising the presentation and the teachers and students for their enthusiastic support during the session. Enjoy the week

STORM HITS LYSTERFIELD PRIMARY
Last Thursday, NRL team, Melbourne Storm came to speak to all our Grade 3 to 6 students. We were
privileged to have Storm Captain, Cameron Smith, Tim Glasby (prop, second row) and Community Liaison
Officer, Len Mason all speak to our students about well-being, belonging, hydration and the importance
of sleep. We all played trivia games around the above topics and the presentation blended beautifully
into the investigations students are currently undergoing with their Quality Beginning Program.
We were lucky to be one of a small number of schools across Australia to be involved in this program and
we hope that the powerful messages of well-being are taken up by our student body. At the end of the
presentation, Cameron and Tim stayed for an autograph and photo session and many of our students
(and some staff) certainly took up this opportunity.
Thanks to Brooke B for taking the photos and special thanks to Mr Issell, Mr Hicks and Mr Mac for helping
to set up for this presentation.
Go Storm!!
