So, let the good times roll. “We anticipate a strong sale,” Keeneland Director of Sales Geoffrey Russell commented. “The quality of the catalogue is excellent.” And that might just be the understatement of the cen- tury. Among the 4,001 horses set to go under auc- tioneer Ryan Mahan’s ham- mer are some top-shelf, Grade I-winning racemares from the past several years, including all-time leading female money win- ner Spain (Thunder Gulch ) (hip 157 ), who sells in foal to Storm Cat ; multiple Ca- nadian champion Windsharp (Lear Fan) ( hip 508 ), the dam of Breeders’ Cup Turf hero Johar (Gone West) and carrying a full sibling to the four-year-old; Golden Apples (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}) (hip 309 ), the cham- pion turf mare in the U.S. in 2002, selling as a broodmare prospect; a top three-year-old filly of 2003, Composure (Touch Gold) ( hip 253 ); and Sharp Cat (Storm Cat) (hip 446 ), who sells on a May 28 cover to Gone West. She will be followed into the ring by her weanling filly by first-year sire Point Given (Thunder Gulch). Her foal of 2002, a filly by Fusaichi Pegasus brought $1.5 million at the September Sale. Bidding for each day of the sale commences at 10 a.m. (Keeneland report cont. p2) Catalogue Gets a Bump... The 4,001 head catalogued for the sale represents an increase of over 11 percent versus last year, when the weanling portion of the sale was adversely affected by Mare Reproductive Loss Syndrome, and is within three percent of the 2001 catalogue, which contained 4,116 horses. This year’s books are comprised of 2,135 broodmares, 1,565 weanlings, 301 horses of other categories and one stallion prospect. WELL-NOTED WIN Taking advantage of a miscue by favored Value Plus (Unbridled’s Song), whose dramatic stumble at the break unseated jockey John Velazquez, second choice Read the Footnotes (Smoke Glacken) notched a front- running victory in yesterday’s GIII Nashua S. at Belmont Park. Sent to the front under jockey Jerry Bailey, Read the Footnotes set a measured pace with Paddington (Saint Ballado) glued to his flank, then outslugged that foe to the wire to win by 2 1/4 lengths. “That wasn’t exactly what we had planned,” said winning trainer Rick Violette, Jr. “Jerry and I talked before the race and thought that Paddington could be out there with Value Plus. If that happened, we wanted to track those two. Jerry is a good jockey to have on your side when you need to call an audible.” Paddington was clearly second best, finishing 6 1/2 lengths ahead of the running-on Who is Chris G. (Numerous). Velazquez was uninjured in the fall. Value Plus recovered from the stumble and ran with the field up the backstretch, appearing unin- jured. The 15- year-old mare, who is the dam of MGSW Graeme Hall and GISW Harmony Lodge, was purchased by Classic Star Ltd from the Blackburn Farm consigment. “We were hoping for a little bit cheaper,” said Classic Star’s Nick Plumber. “We looked at the mare about a month ago down in Florida. They wanted $1-million for her then and we actually turned them down. We thought she would go for $800,000, but I had to pay for her. I thought she was the best mare in the sale.” Owned and raced by Joe Greeley, who owns Sabine Stable, the chestnut is also the dam of stakes winner Win’s Fair Lady (by Dehere), who is also owned by Greeley. The second highest price of the night at $600,000 was handed out for MGSW Santa Catalina (Cure The Blues-- Swept Off Her Feet, by Foreten). Consigned by Angus Glen Farm, agent, the dam of GISW Golden Missile was purchased by the partnership of Gainesway and Gorden Stollery. (F/T report cont. p6)

Thoroughbred Corp. Team Rich in Talent, Pedigree... At the time of his death at just 43 in July 2002,Prince Ahmed Salman had accomplished more in thegame than many do in a lifetime. He had just celebratedhis first Kentucky Derby win with War Emblem, anEpsom Derby winner and a trio of Breeders’ Cup cham-pions. The Prince consistently pointed to one horsewhich put him on the map, a filly by Storm Cat out ofIn Neon (Ack Ack) he purchased for $900,000 at the1996 Barretts March Sale. Sharp Cat was a near instantdynamo at the races and retained that brilliance overher three years at the track, winning 14 of her 21starts, including seven Grade 1s, for earnings of nearly$2 million. She sells Tuesday at Keeneland followed byher weanling daughter by Point Given (hip 447). SharpCat’s first foal, the three-year-old filly A.S. Cat (A.P.Indy), is offered this afternoon in foal to Point Given aship 206. Spain, the winner of the Breeders’ Cup Distaffin 2000 and runner-up in 2001, sells in foal to StormCat, and she will be followed in the ring by her foal ofthis year, a son of Storm Cat (hip 157). Spain’s damDrina (Regal and Royal) is catalogued as hip 588 duringtomorrow’s session. Also the dam of GSW PuertoBanus (Supremo), Drina sells carrying a full sibling toSpain. Salman campaigned Windsharp (Lear Fan) inpartnership and she has already proven herself as abroodmare. A millionaire at the races, the 12-year-oldmare has produced Johar (Gone West), dead-heat win-ner of the Breeders’ Cup Turf as well as GI Del MarOaks heroine Dessert (Storm Cat). The dark bay mare ispregnant on a Feb. 27 cover to Gone West. Whilewould-be Triple Crown winner Point Given is tuckedneatly away in the stallion barn at nearby Three Chim-neys Farm, buyers will have ample opportunity to get tohis family. The first chance comes this afternoon whenPoint Gained, a four-year-old Hennessy half sister toPoint Given, sells in foal to the late Anees (Unbridled)as hip 110. She should serve to whet the appetite forTuesday, when Turko’s Turn (Turkoman), the dam ofthe 2001 Horse of the Year, goes through the ring aship 485. She is carrying a full sibling to Point Given andwill be followed by her foal of this year, a colt by Thun-der Gulch (hip 486).

The Good Gets Even Better.. Saudi Poetry (Gone West), a $1.7-million yearlingpurchase who won the GII Louisville Breeders’ Cup H.for Salman, sells this afternoon as hip 142 in foal toSilver Deputy. Habibti (Tabasco Cat) should spice upthe late going on Tuesday. A two-time Grade I winnerat two, the four-year-old filly is in foal on an Apr. 8cover date to Point Given and sells as hip 639. Herdam, Miss Sobriety, not part of this consignment, hasbeen withdrawn from the sale. Overall, most of thePrince’s breeding stock will be sold, including 42broodmares and 16 weanlings. They are spread amongthe consignments of Mill Ridge Sales, Three Chimneys,Taylor Made, Lane’s End and Hopewell Farm.

The Running of the Bulls... If this sale progresses in the bullish way sales offi-cials expect it will, buyers might just confuse Lexingtonwith Pamplona. “Our September Sale was the second-strongest on record and yearling sales around the worldhave been strong as well,” Geoffrey Russell said. Thereare other tangibles in place, according to the director ofsales. “Keeneland’s fall race meet set attendance andmutuel handle records, the Breeders’ Cup had recordmutuel handle and recent economic indicators pointtoward improvement,” Russell explained. “One of thesefactors would be a boost. Add all of them together andwe’re very encouraged.” Just last week it was an-nounced that the gross domestic product for the thirdquarter had advanced by a stronger-than-expected 7.2percent. Last year’s sale saw 2,377 horses sold forgross receipts of $187,230,000. The average was$78,767 with a median price of $28,000. Bless, a fullsister to Fusaichi Pegasus in foal to Storm Cat, toppedthe sale at $4 million.

Norfields Dispersal... Taylor Made Sales Agency is handling a reduction ofbloodstock of Joanne Nor’s Norfields, which sell as hips59-75 following Monday’s opening session. The draftwas originally scheduled to go through the ring Sundaynight following the William Schettine dispersal, but waspushed back after Schettine decided against selling hishorses. Chief among the 10 horses remaining in thecatalogue for Nor following scratches are hip 63, aweanling colt by Silver Charm out of Quiet Honestly(Believe It), a half sister to the dam of Behrens; and hip71, a weanling filly by Lemon Drop Kid out of DesertStormette (Storm Cat), a full sister to Breeders’ CupSprint winner Desert Stormer. She is the dam of GIIIGardenia H. runner-up Desert Gold (Seeking the Gold).

Here, the crowd’s pick was contentto sit off the leaders, who set snappy fractions up thebackstretch. Duncan Taylor of Taylor Made Sales: “I think the sale’s gonna be a good one. With theeconomy going up, think it will fire some people up. Ithink the new tax laws will help, and the good yearlingsale [KEESEP] always helps. TheMichael Tabor and Susan Magnier-raced Hold ThatTiger, who is a three-quarter brother to Hennessy and ahalf sibling to GI Belmont S. winner Editor’s Note, willstand for $15,000, while the $6.4-million KeenelandSeptember yearling purchase Van Nistelrooy, who com-peted for Tabor, Magnier and Stonerside Stable, willcover his first season at $7,500. “With all the successStorm Cat is enjoying as a sire of sires, it’s great tohave two more of his sons coming to Ashford,” saidAshford Stud’s Director of Sales Aisling Duignan. “HoldThat Tiger and Van Nistelrooy are both superb-lookingindividuals with excellent American pedigrees and bothdisplayed a very high level of ability as juveniles. They’re two very exciting prospects.” As a juvenileHold That Tiger scored in The Curragh’s G3 Railway S.and the G1 Grand Criterium at Longchamp before end-ing the year with a third-place finish in the GI Breeders’Cup Juvenile at Arlington Park. Following a trio of un-placed efforts in Europe this year, the Aidan O’Brien-trained colt finished second behind probable Horse ofthe Year Mineshaft in the GI Woodward H. Sept. 6before coming home fifth in his most recent outing inthe GI Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita Oct. 25. Heretires to stud with three wins from 10 starts and earn-ings of $646,421. Van Nistelrooy, also conditioned byO’Brien, won three of six lifetime starts, including lastyear’s G2 Futurity S. and placed, beaten only 3/4 of alength by dual Group 1 winner Refuse to Bend, in theG1 National S.

The sophomoreshowed little in his return, a badly beaten fifth at thislevel at Belmont Sept. 12, but he wired a field of allow-ance foes before being disqualified to second Oct. 19. Coming right back two weeks later, New YorkHero was forced to stalk the leaders after stumbling atthe break. The predicament worked in his favor, how-ever, as he had plenty in the tank to overcome thetiring pacesetter Don Six with a swift turn of foot in thefinal panel. Post-time favorite First Blush closed well toround out the trifecta.

RACING MOURNS DEATH OF RIDER Irish racing was mourning yesterday the second deathof one of its jockeys in the last three months as appren-tice jockey Sean Cleary failed to recover from severehead injuries sustained in a fall at Galway last Sunday.Cleary, who had ridden 14 winners while under the careof Jim Bolger and Pat Flynn, had been sent to the Beau-mont Hospital in Dublin after the fall in opener on thecard, caused by clipping heels with the horse in front. His condition deteriorated on Friday night before pass-ing away the following evening, becoming the secondcasualty of his profession after the death of jumpsjockey Kieran Kelly on Aug. 12. In a statement issuedon Saturday night Walter Halley, the Irish Turf Club’smedical officer, said, “It is with deep regret that I an-nounce the death of Sean Cleary following severe headinjuries sustained at Galway on Sunday last, October26. His tragic death is deeply mourned by the Clearyfamily, the Turf Club and everyone in Irish racing.”Trainer Flynn paid tribute to the 22-year-old, who hadenjoyed his finest hour in the sport when partnering onBubble N Squeak (Ire) to win the November H. atLeopardstown 12 months ago. “It’s a terrible situationthat Sean was cruelly mowed down in the prime of hislife,” he told PA Sport yesterday. “He was very dedi-cated, was enjoying his best season and had a realfuture as a strong lightweight. He was a credit to hisfamily.” Racing at Clonmel and Leopardstown, whichwas to feature the November H., was abandoned yes-terday as a mark of respect.
