-THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HEARING AND LISTENING

WHO WE ARE

-WHEN YOU

TELL GREAT STORIES,

PEOPLE PAY ATTENTION.

Great stories speak for themselves; they don’t need to be dressed up or dumbed down. Tell them with passion, care, commitment and integrity and people will listen. So that’s what we do – tell the stories people need to hear, in a way that makes them listen.

SPG is one of the UK’s leading independent audio production companies. We make inspiringstory-first content based on rigorous journalistic principles and meticulous production values. Our team of journalists and producers know what it takes to tell an engaging story and have the skills to deliver an exceptional product every time.

We travel the world in search of stories that matter: whether it’s current affairs, health, sport, food, science or religion – if the story is worth telling, we want to be the ones to do it. And it seems that our approach is working: in the three short years since our launch we’ve built an impressive portfolio of work, having made award-winning podcasts and radio programmes for some of the biggest broadcasters, platforms and commercial partners in the world.

WHO ISLISTENING?Podcasts are the ideal format to communicate a brand’s core messages and values. Apple recently reported that there are well over one billion active podcast subscriptions, making them a remarkably effective way of connecting with the public. In the UK, listeners download and stream 10 million podcasts a week and it’s an audience that is still growing rapidly. 23% of the UK population have listened to a podcast in the last month, spending an average of 6.7 hours a week listening to podcasts.

*All data taken from UK audiences

Listeners are eager to engage directly with brands that sponsor podcasts:

*Survey demographics: 1,335 male and female online UK residents were surveyed between December 18 and 26, 2017. Podcast listeners are defined as anyone who has listened to a podcast in the past month. Data was weighted to ensure online national representative proportions, using age, gender and region.

LAND ROVER-The Discovery AdventuresIn 2017 our producers were commissioned by Jaguar Land Rover to write, produce and direct a podcast series to excite families and get them out on the road, encouraging them to ‘discover the world on their doorstep’.

The seven-part series was the first ever family-friendly binaurally recorded podcast and used the immersive experience of 3D sound to encourage adventurers of all ages to get out and experience a British outdoor adventure by car, a perfect expedition whatever the weather.

The series brought the adventurous spirit of Land Rover to life, reflecting the brand’s ethos to get off the beaten track and discover the wonders of the world around us.

Starring Alexander Armstrong, Sir Ranulph Fiennes and Chris Packham, it went on to win ‘Most Original Podcast’ award at The British Podcast Awards 2018, alongside a raft of other awards.

DEEZER -Gorillaz present ‘Things I Like’Last year we teamed up with music streaming service Deezer to launch their original content, Things I Like, a podcast collaboration with the world’s most successful virtual band Gorillaz.

The podcast series centred on Gorillaz’ drummer Russel Hobbs as he looked into the minds of some of the world’s most creative, innovative and influential musicians. Joined by a stellar list of Gorillaz friends including Jehnny Beth, De La Soul’s Pos, Peven Everett, Little Simz and Cheick Tidiane Seck this is an exploration of the past, the future and everything in between: music, art, life and the afterlife - while not forgetting a subject very close to the heart of this man mountain... his dinner plans.

OTHER COMMERCIAL WORK

AirBnB George At Asda The Prince’s Trust

In 2016 we began producing a number of audio walks and site-specific documentaries for Airbnb. These podcasts are immersive, location-aware journeys through some of Airbnb’s most fascinating neighbourhoods. On each walk listeners meet a series of locals — residents, business owners, local heroes, etc. — who take them by the hand and show them the neighbourhood they know best. You can find these audio walks featured in the ‘Experiences’ section of the Airbnb app.

In 2018 we produced a series of podcasts about The Trust’s Young Ambassadors - young people who have been helped by The Trust and now volunteer for it. The aim of the series was to create intimate sound portraits of young people who have faced unimaginable hardship. As a result, the series is a study in resilience and hope. The listener is beckoned into the subject’s inner world, thereby forging a personal connection in the way that only audio can.

We have written and produced a number of adverts for George at Asda, most recently for their ‘World Book Day’ and ‘Back To School’ campaigns. We draw on real stories of parents and their kids to give the scripts an authentic feel, and we approach the sound design for these short ads with the same degree of thought and creativity that has garnered awards for our long-form work.

Society of London TheatreWellcome CollectionCannes LionsTate Modern

In 2018 we were commissioned to make an audio guide for the Tate Modern’s upcoming exhibition on the French artist Pierre Bonnard. The guide is a meticulously researched, clearly communicated companion to the French master’s work, featuring expert voices from around the UK. This guide is a departure from the Tate’s previous output in that it has an informal, conversational tone, with the distinct feel of a podcast.

In 2016 we produced an audio walk around the West End, starring Sir Ian McKellen. We spent two days interviewing Sir Ian in the studio and on location, to create the ultimate Theatreland tour: a personal and revealing history of British theatre by one of its icons. The audio walk also featured a cast of top comedy talent for cutaway scenes depicting significant moments in the history of theatre.

We have made a series of audio pieces for the museum and library Wellcome Collection’s Understanding Nature exhibition. Examining what we think, feel and value about other species and what this means for the world around us, including interviews with members of the public and celebrities focusing on society’s changing attitudes to the natural world. Working alongside the exhibitions curators to produce the audio content for the exhibition, it was a fascinating and successful collaboration.

In 2017 we were commissioned to make a podcast series for the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. We spent five days at the festival and, in collaboration with the Parsons School of Design, interviewed some of the world’s most celebrated advertising creatives such as Robert Wong (Google), David Shingy (Oath), Ellie Norman (Formula 1), Brian Wong (Kiip) and Tom Donaldson and Jill Wilfert (Lego).

HOW ITWORKSSPG will be there through every stage of podcast production with the client - from initial conception of the story and format, through to recording, editing, scripting, distribution and marketing. We have broken down this process into four key areas:

We take the time to make sure we understand exactly what each of our clients wants and needs from SPG. No mere box-ticking exercise or off-the-shelf process, each consultation session – or sessions – is designed to establish exactly what we need to deliver, resulting in a detailed plan of action covering every aspect of the production. From the first script meeting, all the way to the final edit and promotional campaign, you’ll know exactly what will be happening with your production.

No matter how good the concept, how compelling the interview or exciting the location, if the post-production is lacklustre, the end product will suffer. At SPG our editors dedicate as much time, care and attention to detail in the studio as we do when recording. We are able to offer state of the art sound design, originally composed music, top quality voice-over artists and audio wizardry that will make your project shine. Throughout the editing process we actively seek feedback from our clients, providing flexibility and responsiveness, responding to the evolving needs of the brief so as to deliver a final product with impact.

We go where the brief takes us, from the studio to the field; at home and abroad. We have extensive experience of recording in every type of location you can imagine, from the verdant centre court of Wimbledon, to dusty Supermax prisons on the US-Mexico border; in the deep forest of the Belarusian countryside, all the way to the searing Egyptian heat... Wherever our brief take us, our producers and journalists will be there every step of the way, recording every interview and session to broadcast quality, ensuring the audio captured is of the highest standard possible.

SPG offers our clients everything they need to launch their podcast. We can deliver or upload to all the major hosting platforms, such as iTunes and Spotify; embed the podcast on dedicated pages of the clients’ website; liaise with their social media and website managers to ensure a high-impact, coordinated cross-channel promotion, giving the podcast the best possible chance of reaching its target audience, and advise on marketing campaigns and publicity drives. We don’t see our job as finished just because we’ve completed the podcast – SPG are here to help your project succeed on every level.
