March 2, 2016"International Women's Day:Celebrating Women in Rotary"

Dr. Anne L. MatthewsPast Vice President

Rotary Internationalby Bobbie Applegate

Dr. Matthews’ South Carolina drawl should never bemistaken for moving slowly. Working on her father’s wordsof “You can do what you want to do as long as you workhard,” Anne has amassed very impressive credentials withinRotary International and in the world of education. The youngest of 15 children raised on a tobacco farm, Annelearned early about team sports and played baseball andfootball. Her favorite team sport is football, and she made itclear she is a South Carolina Gamecock and hopes to comeback in the next life and coach them to an SECchampionship. Anne’s passions in Rotary are to feed the hungry, providehealthcare, clean water and immunizations for those living inpoverty. She asked us all to remember how blessed we areto live in the United States and to be able to eat what wewant, have clean water to drink, sanitation and access tohealthcare. Some 13 million people starve to death eachyear and one billion go to bed hungry every night. Twothirds of the children who die each year would not have diedif healthcare would have been accessible. One half of the people in developing countries are drinkingcontaminated water. Sanitation is a problem that wecertainly don’t think about here. We take many things forgranted. Water is a precious commodity “on loan fromnature.” The RI Foundation has committed 25 million

dollars over the next 25 years to increase clean water sourcesthroughout the world. “Literacy is the escape hatch from poverty.” The greatestpredictor of health care is education. 26% of the world’spopulation can neither read nor write their names and ofthose, twothird are women. Education is the greatest gift togive. The Rotary Foundation is playing a major role in all of theseareas as well as providing immunizations. This year onlytwo cases of polio have been reported: in Pakistan andAfghanistan. We need to keep working and are hopeful thatour government’s task force will fund the immunizationproject in 2016. The Foundation is hopeful we will seethe completion of the Polio eradication project this year. Anne made a request to each Rotarian: “Continue to be a giftto the world.” Rotarians ARE making a difference and needto continue doing so. What will be remembered about eachof us when we leave this earth is the significance of our giftto the world, our integrity and courage. Think about whatyou will leave behind.
