Data Journalism
BERL worked with Philanthropy New Zealand to deliver the “Giving New Zealand” report.

Charities Register Data
BERL also worked with Te Puni Kokiri. This is a quote from Phil Coghini, Te Puni Kokiri:
“The Charities Services data is the best source (if not the only source) of financial information that we have on Māori organisations that are registered charities. Also its site, is flexible and open to enable anyone with the internet, to access a large chunk of their database contents , and download into useful formats (e.g. csv or excel) for further data manipulation and integration.
Te Puni Kōkiri, supplies this information to the Business and Economic Research Institute (BERL) who uses this information source (amongst others) to help update the Māori asset base and contribution to GDP statistics.
Also this helps reduce respondent burden, particularly for useful information that is already accessible in the public domain (Charity Services).
I’ve been an advocate for data re-use and open data where this can be done: cost effectively and efficiently, to help reduce respondent burden, help improve government transparency of its services, saving tax payers monies and time, and help reduce information asymmetry.
I believe the info from Charities Services is an excellent example of data re-use and releasing open data.”
